Product Highlights

  • Folds Upward to Just 19.6"
  • Reversible 2-Section Center Column
  • Short Center Column for Low-Angle Shots
  • Supports Loads Up to 17.6 lb
  • Weighs Just 3.0 lb

The 3 Legged Thing X4 Eric 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod is a supremely versatile camera support that folds tight, bends low, and stretches high. One leg detaches from the rest of the tripod to become a monopod, and the tall center column can be removed and changed out for the included 3.9" "stubby" center column for low-angle shooting. With its 4-section legs and 2-section center column fully extended, the X4 Eric reaches a generous maximum height of 81.1".

Constructed of lightweight yet rigid 8x carbon fiber, the tripod offers remarkable strength for its light weight (3.0 lb). The X4 Eric supports loads up to 17.6 lb, and you can attach just about any head to the collar via the included reversible 1/4"-20 & 3/8"-16 screw.

Leg angles can be set at three different positions; at their widest and with the column removed, the top of the tripod chassis sits only 5.3" from the ground. The leg angles can be set independently to support stable shooting on uneven surfaces. When it's time to transport or store the X4 Eric, the legs fold upward 180° so that if a head (sold separately) is attached, the feet will reach to the top of the head to form a tight little package (19.6" long).

Constructed of eight-core Stealth Carbon Fiber, the 26mm (upper section diameter) legs offer excellent lateral and torsional strength
Magnesium alloy chassis for lightweight strength
Grub screw in the wide mounting plate enables extremely steadfast connection with a head
Spirit level on tripod chassis
Smooth-glide leg catches
Leg angles can be set independently at 23°, 55°, and 80°
Spring hook for hanging a ballast for extra stability in windy conditions
Double-section rapid center column is removable and reversible. Also included is a short center column (3.9"), which facilitates shooting from extremely low angles (minimum height is 5.3")
Feet can be unscrewed and interchanged (extra feet not included)

Comments about 3 Legged Thing X4 Eric 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Average...For the price this should've been better. Plastic couplings feel cheap and susceptible to failure. Also, snugging them all up seems to be a constantly repeatable process to maintain stability. The fold back design of the legs is nice in theory but don't plan on it working with most full or medium sized ball heads. Finally, the leg bolts need adjusting far too often as well. I'll keep it as my travel tripod and remove my head every time it's packed away. Overall it's not great.

Comments about 3 Legged Thing X4 Eric 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I pre-ordered one of these before they were available for sale and received it in December 2011. I've been using it for over 7 months now, and have come to really appreciate all the extra features and details that this tripod provides. Considering the price, it's an absolutely fantastic value. I own 4 other tripods besides this one, and I almost never use any of the others anymore.

In most cases, you'd have to buy multiple tripods to get all the features found in this one. Want an extendable center column? Or a reversible center column? Or no center column at all? Or a detachable monopod? Or something that gets REALLY tall? Or something that gets REALLY short? Or a very light tripod? Or a very stable tripod? Or a hook to hang more weight for extra stability? This tripod includes ALL those features and more, all in the very same product. And there are no extra accessories required to get those features, it's all included. I'd even go so far as saying that the weight rating is conservative. I'd feel safe loading it with over 30 pounds of weight. I'd say the 18 pound limit refers to off-axis loading (ie. a camera hanging off the side of the center column).

Maintaining your tripod is key to its long life and dependability. And that's where this model shines. The whole thing comes apart in a few short minutes, and all the tools required to do it are included (essentially, 2 allen keys). The high-end carrying case even includes a compartment to store these tools and any other accessories you might need.

Speaking of the carrying case, this is by far the best manufacturer-included case I've ever seen. It's solid, well-padded, roomy, has a built-in handle AND an easily-removable shoulder strap. As mentioned above, it also has a zippered compartment for extra accessories. Mine is bright orange, so it doubles as a highly visible marker for others to see when I'm shooting in the dark.

So far I've only had 2 gripes with this tripod:

            1) I prefer lever locks, but 3LT only offers twist locks. They work great, but my palms get sore from the twisting motion when I need to make frequent adjustments. This hardly warrants removing a star from the rating, though.

            2) One of the legs (on the detachable monopod) had a small superficial crack in the outer layer of carbon fiber when I received it. I emailed 3LT, and they immediately sent me a replacement leg at no cost, and asked me to send them back the cracked leg after I received the new one. They even offered to pay my shipping cost (which I declined, because I was so impressed with the quality of service). This meant I had NO downtime whatsoever.

Meanwhile, my other tripods sit in a closet, gathering dust. I do take out my Slik Sprint Pro II occasionally when I need a super tiny tripod that I can slip in a bag, but for the most part this 3LT X4 Eric has become my go-to tripod for 99% of situations. Considering the price I paid, I couldn't be more satisfied. I foresee many years of happy ownership.

Comments about 3 Legged Thing X4 Eric 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I got this right when it came back in stock and just one day prior to a trip to DC that I just didn't want to take my Giottos on. This is less than half the weight, shorter when collapsed, and I took it with me everywhere since it was so light.

Also, I wanted a taller tripod so I didn't need to bend down OR extend the center column. I'm 5' 10.5 and with my ball head attached I don't bend down at all when it's at the narrowest angle. It's awesome!

It is quite light so on a few occasions I hung my wife's carryall on it for extra stability.

My only gripe is that I can't collapse it 100% the way it should due to the head I use. That means I'll be buying one of theirs and putting mine back on my Giottos. Even with that I would recommend this again and again.

Comments about 3 Legged Thing X4 Eric 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I am a professional HDR photographer and the tripod is extremely crucial to my photography. This is by far the best tripod I have ever owned. It is extremely light and also very rigid. It only takes a quarter turn to adjust the legs, which makes for very quick transitioning. One of my favorite features is being able to invert the camera on the center column and have the camera a half inch off the ground. I will never own another brand tripod!
