Recently I shot my first broadcast TV commercial with a DSLR. One shot was a low angle with the sun at about 2 o'clock in front of me. Thankfully I had a C- stand, black flag and an assistant, but what I really needed was the Flex lens shade. While the flag helped me see the shot, it didn't protect against flares, and it was a slider shot. I had some versions with sun flares and some without. Turns out the client didn't like the "glare in the shot," and I was just lucky I had enough takes that I found one without a sun flare to replace it. Budding cinematographers beware...lots of people still consider sun flares bad camera work, rather than a "cinematic touch." the reason you see it so often is many movies are shot at golden hour with the sun low in the sky, a prime condition for flares since the sun is also often used as a back light.

Anyway, not having an expensive matte box, adding the flex shade to a quality variable ND filter will give you almost all the benefits of both. At this price, it's simply a no brainier.

I had high hopes for this device, since I often shoot at night and find that my lens hoods are often inadequate to completely prevent flare from lights that are just out of frame. I was looking for something I would wrap around my lens hood to provide a bit more flare prevention.Unfortunately, this shade is only usable with one of my lenses--a 100mm. Anything shorter than that and the shade either protrudes into frame or needs to be placed so far back on the lens that it obstructs the focus ring. The shade is bendable, but bending the shade backwards to keep it out of frame means you can't wrap the shade downwards to protect from light coming in from the left or right. On top of that, even if you do wrap the shade down on the left/right axis it won't stay put for long--the fore/aft axis is reinforced with a piece of metal that holds a bend well, but the left/right axis is unreinforced and slowly slips back to flat..Additionally, the shade itself takes quite a while to figure out the first time you use it (it took me about five minutes to figure out how to attach it) and the 24" velcro attachment strap is _very_ loud--if you need to put this on or adjust it during an event, forget it: the deafening rip of inch after inch of velcro will make you the center of attention, no matter how slowly or carefully you try to do it.Build quality is also poor. After being used three times, the shade is now covered in deep wrinkles and the stitching at the base of the shade is starting to come undone--I'm out [$] because there's no way I can return it in this state.

    Comments about Flex Lens Shade:

Big improvement over my hand in shielding my Canon 17mm TSE, which with its protruding from element glass design is a magnet for flaring lights. Stores flat. I love the carrying convenience and flexibility. One drawback: it hugs the focusing ring and can easily throw the focus off

    A Little Tricky to Use

      Comments about Flex Lens Shade:

The Flex Lens Shade is a bit tricky to use the first time but does provide some valuable blocking of unwanted sun. I used it on my Pentax 16-50 DA which has a large lens hood. If I do not want to attach it I can also just hold the flex lens shade with one hand to block the sun. For the price, I feel it is worth it if it gets me one great shot without sun flare.

Use on my Panasonic Z-10000 3-D camcorder. Works well on my square lens shade- does not slip. It is more professional looking than the pictures indicate.

I put velcro on the top and used some old nylon camera case dividers as lightweight side "barn doors"- it works great - dont need rails or heavy aluminum!

                      Comments about Flex Lens Shade:

I bought this shade for use with lenses on my Panasonic GH3, which is a mirrorless camera. Unfortunately the lenses are rather too small and it keeps falling off. I don't use lens hoods because I need to keep a neutral density filter attached while shooting video. But that's the very reason I need a lens shade. This, however, is not the one for the job.

                          Comments about Flex Lens Shade:

Got this about a month ago and the stitches on the loops that are supposed to hold the strap on pulled out when I tried to thread the strap through the very first time. To B&H's credit they sent me an email with a pre-paid UPS label to send it back for a replacement. But I am going to have a velcro strip stitched to the underside of where the strap goes and then attach velcro to my lens hood to hold it on. I am a video guy and the loop would not fit on the lens hood on my zoom anyway.

The bottom line is I think I can use this on my super-wide angle when I am zoomed in, and the velcro strips should make it fast and easy to take off and on. But this thing appears to be very cheaply made. I am hoping this is not a Made-in-America product.

I attached this directly to my lens, but it kept falling off. I wrapped it as tightly as I could but it wouldn't stay on unless I kept the camera horizontal to the ground. There is only a small lip on the lens so if I put it on more I couldn't extend my zoom lens.

If I can update this later I'll add a photo which will provide a better view of what I'm trying to say.

                            Comments about Flex Lens Shade:

As a light-shield, certainly adequate. As a gadget to satisfy a gadget lover, also adequate! In the field when time and convenience are critical, this gadget is often a fussy bother. Impromptu alternatives like a partner's shadow or one's hat are quicker (no need to attach and adjust) and just as adequate. I liked this little item but returned it, figuring it certainly is not worth the asking price.
Pro: interesting enough to prompt inquiries, and easy to attach
Con: fussy to adjust, especially when time is limited, and certainly not something anyone would want to leave attached

Good idea, but before I could even attach this to my lens the loop that holds the strap ripped off. The stitching that holds the loop for the strap is a joke, it unthreaded as I was trying to put the Velcro strap through it deeming this great idea worthless. It's too bad that shipping this back isn't even worth the postage making this a total waste of money. Save yourself the trouble and don't buy this.

                                      Comments about Flex Lens Shade:

Easy to install and use. Will not work on all lens types. Auto focus or manual focus rings extending the length of the lens barrel will reposition the shade. All other types works just fine.

Of course a big black shade will block the sun. But it says it's very flexible. It does move, but it doesn't stay put like in the photo. A little misleading, not worth the price I paid.
