The Porta-Trace / Gagne LED Light Panel - 8.5 x 11" is a bright white LED viewing panel. At only .75" / 1.9cm thick and with a removable power adapter, the light panel is highly portable and fits perfectly within a portfolio or briefcase. Constructed out of anodized aluminum and plexiglas, the panel is durable and built to travel.
The eco-friendly design features LED lights with an expected life of 50,000 hours with low power consumption. With a 100/240Vac power source, the panel can be used in the USA as well as internationally.

I purchased this light panel to compare to my fifteen year old florescent Porta-Trace light box.
This new light panel is quite nicely made. (And also surprisingly, it's made in the USA) The frame is metal and the whole panel has a very solid feel and reassuring heft. The entire top of the panel is striking clear acrylic, with a backlit frosted surface slightly below--the best analogy would be it's similar in construction and appearance to looking at a framed and matted print, only flat on your desk. The panel is wonderfully thin. There's no warm up period for the LED lights as with the older flourescent tube light box.
The dust problems reported earlier seem to be from fine static-charged dust and debris somehow getting between the clear acrylic and the frosted panel below the top surface. There's no way to take it apart to clean that out that I can see.
The downsides: the white LEDs used in this panel aren't quite right in their color balance for looking at color transparency (film) images. This will be trivial to most users (who besides me uses color slide film anymore?) but any color material placed on the panel has a overly purple-blue tint. This isn't the case with the old florescent tube daylight-balanced 5000K light box.
Another minor detraction is that this panel is slightly not as bright as the old florescent light boxes. My camera meter found a one stop difference between the two, with the LED panel being not quite as bright. However, the LED panel is perfectly even in its illumination over the entire surface--my old Porta-trace fluorescent light box has noticeable hot spots and uneven light. The LED panel is most excellent in that aspect.
It would have been nice for the panel to have some rubber feet to protect my desktop--the metal frame has the potential to easily scratch whatever it's placed on. This was trivial to fix with some self-stick rubber pads from the hardware store but would have been nice to have had them included in the box.
It would have been nice if a sleeve or cover had come with the panel to keep it clean and dust free between uses.
This is a really nice lighted surface. Good construction and build (other than the internal dust) and it's great for examining black and white film negatives. I do wish the color balance had been better for color film, so I'll have to keep my old florescent light box around for that. The instant on and off of the LEDs is nice as well.
Good product, with small flaws. I would recommend it to a friend, only with reservations it not be used for color-critical work.

Poor quality control - dust on the inside - uneven lighting (looks like a LCD that is delaminating from it's backlight)
But: Good enough for looking at negatives to choose what to scan. Blotchy lighting doesn't seem to affect usage significantly.
I would have returned it if I were closer to the store to hope for a better one. Not worth the cost of shipping, since it is usable.

I meant to use this light panel to create a contact sheet for color negatives using an Epson flatbed scanner. My plan was to use the panel to illuminate the whole page, rather than using the scanner's slide holder and scanner cover light source. Alas, the scanner only scans the slides or negative mounted in the holder--not the whole scanner bed used for reflective (rather than transmissive) scanning.
Ideas anyone?

The product is great. We had a of a problem with our first one as it arrived with a very visible black spot right in the middle of it. We brought it back to the store and one of the guys there worked really hard to help us out. At the end we got a new one and it's perfect!
