The slate gray Pro Messenger Bag 160 AW from Lowepro is a shooters bag. This is a slightly different style of bag than a traditional shoulder bag since it features Lowepro's exclusive FlexFlap that opens and closes without buckles or snaps. The touch fastened closure opens and closes with ease - the way you want a bag to open when you need your gear at the drop of a hat. When the shot comes along, you'll be ready with gear in hand. The interior is divided in half with main compartment and a zippered storage pocket. Hence, the bag is made to hold a pro DSLR with grip and attached zoom lens, plus one extra lens and a flash in main compartment or a pro DSLR with grip (body only) in the front pocket, plus three lenses and a flash in the zippered compartment.

It's made from a tough exterior canvas-like material that is made to take a beating and meets Lowepro's usual high standards. The shoulder strap is wide, adjustable and padded since Lowerpro knows you'll be outside much of the day and need to be comfortable. However, if the weather turns against you, they've included a neat All-Weather cover that can be rapidly deployed for complete protection from the elements.

The interior is filled with adjustable dividers that permit you to configure the bag to suit your equipment needs. There's also a zippered interior pocket that can hold additional gear. A SlipLock Attachment Loop is included on each side for those small quick grab items that you don't want to waste time searching for in your bag such as a pouch, keys, flashlight or cleaning cloth.  As a final touch, there's a Dual Purpose Pocket in the rear that can be opened and used as a trolley sleeve.

Backed by Lowepro's lifetime warranty, this bag will get you up, out and shooting - in all kinds of weather and with the gear you need in a bag that doesn't weigh you down and is easy to use.

Buying a bag is tricky business, and if you're anything like me, it becomes a process akin to the one you went through to FINALLY decide on a camera. It's a highly personal choice, and often-times, one that is not made with any satisfaction without actually seeing, feeling and playing with the bag and strap before hand (I returned 2 bags before I got wise).

      WHAT I LIKE:
      -smallish (a good, all-day bag)
      -tough, durable
      -soft, inside and out
      -ample padding all around
-great handle (runs the length of bag and is adjustable).
-inside walls are, top-to-bottom, velcro-friendly. No limits to where you apply the velcro dividers.
-more space than you may think, once you start loading it up (I own a Canon 60D, 2 lenses & flash, plus accessories)
      -Comfortable on the hip
-velcro silencers are super-easy to use
      -magnetic closer helps

STRAP & PADDING: My initial impressions were not great. The strap itself is perfectly fine, may even be enough without the shoulder pad. But it's the pad I initially had issues with: it's bulky and, though it has a set curve to the shoulder, is pretty stiff. (I looked to see if you could remove it: you cannot, and in a brief moment of desperation, I even thought of taking a knife to it). HOWEVER--and this is a big "however"--I have come to like the padding quite a bit. You truly appreciate it once you're out shooting for half the day. Though you know you have a bag over your shoulder, it never feels cumbersome. As a matter-of-fact, I was impressed; this is one very comfortable bag. It's not perfect--and I've heard it said that no bag is--but this is pretty much exactly what I wanted for all my needs.

WHAT I DO NOT LIKE: The price. I paid it, because of everything I stated above, and because I intend to keep this bag as my one-and-only for life (hopefully it ages well), but Lowepro is charging a premium for a debut model. I get they are trying to compete with the likes of Think Tank here, but perhaps they should have come in a bit lower than said competition. Generate some buzz in a bad economy. Win over the public (Am I just being naive?). How else would you explain VERY few customer reviews of this line, and virtually NO Youtube video reviews. Drop the price some, Lowepro.

I bought this bag because I needed something smaller (and less conspicuous) than the huge black Lowepro backpack I own.
What I like the most about it is the fact, that it does not look like the typical photo bag. It could easily be taken for a normal bag (you don't usually want to call attention onto your equipment, right?). And it is quite beautiful in itself.
It is comfortable when it comes to accessing equipment, and it will fit a couple of long lenses and a flash plus a pro body with no lens attached to it; or a pro body with a 24-70 mm lens, a 70-200 on one side and either another lens or a flash on the other, plus another body in the front pocket if you don't mind looking like a postman before Xmas.
In other words: you can put inside three 70-200 lenses (should you wish to do so) plus a pro body in the front pocket.
It looks resilient and good-quality too, although I need more time to tell if that is really the case.
It is light compared to my backpack, but of course it is not as well padded.
The biggest cons are: the strap can be uncomfortable when worn for a long time when the bag is fully loaded (it needs redesigning IMO). It might be prone to dirt. There are no snap locks or zippers, just velcro, which makes it easily accessible... also for thieves.
It is a beautiful bag and I would not mind all these cons if it were cheaper. But for its price it should at least be more comfortable to wear (that strap!). I haven't seen a better option though, that's why I would still recommend it and do not regret having bought it.
I hope my English is understantable :-)

I have spent 2 weeks in Italy taking pictures of the many cities. This bag is very durable and comfortable on the shoulder when fully loaded. There is plenty of space for 4 prime lenses, 1 body and a flash. I would highly recommend to anyone.

My wife uses this while I use the 180 AW. We both love these bags. They hold an amazing amount of equipment and are designed to allow for easy access for virtually everything. Has lots of smaller storage pockets though a couple of them are difficult to access. Bag has a lot of padding to protect your gear-- this was important to us. But this does add to overall weight of the bag, which is a bit heavy already when it's empty.

It doesn't look like a camera bag. The bag holds Canon 5D III with a 70-200mm f4 attached (hood reversed). If you wanna store a camera with a 70-200mm f2.8 lens mounted vertically, it is a little tight.

Comments about Lowepro Pro Messenger Bag 160 AW (Slate Gray):

I bought this bag because my camera bag is a little big too small for my essential equipment. I always bring 5D3, 35L, 24 TS-E and a flash gun. Depending on the situation, I'll also bring a 85L, 135L or 70-200 f/4. That's one camera, three lenses and a flash gun. Plus some small accessories. The shoulder pad on the strap is comfortable but a little bit too stiff. The FlexFlap is very well designed. Generally everything is very functional.

The bag looks ok. It does not have a fashionable appearance but it's not a fashion item.

One thing I don't like about the bag is that the weather protection wrap is not removable. The bag is stored in the front, making the bag a little bulgy and tilted to the front.

I wanted a bag that blended in to the street environment. This bag was the one for me , great build and great design . I own three lowepro products this bag is the latest addition to the family. Looks retro style and i love the pockets with amples of space. If you are lookin for a quality bag with style this is it. Buy it now

I bought this bag and the Event Messenger 250. I returned this and kept the Event Messenger.

This is the more featured bag and has greater volume but the more structured construction of the Event Messenger made it easier to work out of.

(See my review of it on its page).

                        Otherwise typical Lowepro quality.

I'm like a woman and her pocketbooks when it comes to camera bags. I have several because I like to use the right one depending on where I'm going and what kit I'm bringing. This bag is great for taking a pro DSLR, a flash and/or a long telephoto with some accessories. I've put my 7D with grip, 580EX, and 70-200 L with some small accessories in it and it was fine. I don't like to load it up too much - I have a different bag for that.

The bag is very well made and the strap and balance of it is great. No matter how you look at it the kit can get heavy but I had the bag on my shoulder all day and had no problem. Padding is great. It's also really easy to take the camera in and out of the bag.

The dual mode flap is a cool idea and I actually found myself using it both ways during the course of the day. If I was actively shooting I kept it tucked under. When I was putting it away for longer stretches (lunch break, subway) I secured it with the velcro.

Comments about Lowepro Pro Messenger Bag 160 AW (Slate Gray):

I love everything about this bag. The materials, functionality and size is perfect. I debated between this and the next size up the 180 AW. I thought the 180 was just too big to carry around for hours at a time, while this one fit the bill. It carries everything you need and not everything you own. A full frame with 70-200 2.8ii attached fits with a few other lenses as well. And then you have pockets for the small stuff, I'll put my 600 flash in the zippered front pocket. I compared this to the equivalent Think Tank and I chose this, no regrets what so ever.

I like the bags looks great, and it seems very protecting. But for my needs it's too tall and narrow. the Ipad pocked has a zipper and it's not big enough. The should pad is uncomfortable and bulky. The foam seperation walls inside are tall and poorly designed. Thin too. I like teh storage pockets on the side but I can see why this bag was $80.00 off. I'm just dissapointed overall and should have speant my money on a another bag.

Comments about Lowepro Pro Messenger Bag 160 AW (Slate Gray):

I haven't been able to really test this bag on a shoot, but from just general usage walking around it seems like a great bag.

Pros: Fits all my stuff (D700 with an attached 85 1.8, 35mm 1.8 and a speedlight) that I'd need for probably 85% of my shoots

                                      Strap is comfortable.

                                      Lots of pockets everywhere.

Cons: Because the bag goes so deep, they put another divider in the middle of the bag running across the section, splitting it in two. The problem is that it makes whatever's on the bottom of the bag hard to get to. It would be nice to see a zipper or something on the bottom, because I like to store all sorts of small knick nacks at the bottom like cables and stuff, and it'd be nice to have that.

Comments about Lowepro Pro Messenger Bag 160 AW (Slate Gray):

IntroductionThanks to the many resources available to me through the internet, I had heard of the LowePro Pro Messenger series, before. After familiarizing myself with the Pro Messengers' abundance of intuitive features(e.g. concealable rain cover, silent magnetic flap closure, designated flash pouches, etc.), I took the plunge. Initial ImpressionThe Pro Messenger 160 AW wasn't too far off from what I had expected; exceptional build quality, a comfortable, grippy shoulder strap, and plenty of space to accommodate my gear(gripped D7000, 17-55mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8G, SB-700,blower)! The main compartment is somewhat modular, as you can remove/arrange the velcro dividers to your liking. As expected, the material inside the main compartment is also very photo-gear friendly. The lining is soft and there isn't anything for your gear to snag on. There is an inner zippered pocket on the rear wall of the bag. This is useful for small, thin items like microfiber cloths. On the front of the bag there is a smaller zippered compartment for personal items. There is a key ring, slots for pens/pencils,etc. You could store a plethora of things in there, though, ranging from business cards to memory cards to lens pens to chargers to spare batteries. Personally, I have my lens caps, body cap, lens pens, charger and remote stored in there. The exterior is made of some sort of canvas-like material. It feels nice and durable, so no problems there. Aside from the robust shoulder strap, there is also an adjustable carry handle on top of the bag. It's made up of the same material as the shoulder strap. The back of the bag has a dual purpose zippered pocket. There is one zipper on the top and one on the bottom. If you open up both zippers, you're able to thread the handle of a trolley bag through the pocket. On the contrary, with just the top zipper open you could store waivers or maybe carry around an iPad, or something. There are also side pockets on this bag, which could be used for additional flashes, or personal items. I use one of them to store my Black Rapid. My favorite feature of the Pro Messenger 160 AW has got to be variation of the flap. Usually you'd expect a messenger bag's flap to close with the use of nothing but velcro. LowePro went above and beyond and gives you the ability to fold the flap in half, so that you can take advantage of the magnet in there. That's right, the flap has a small magnet which seals the flap shut just as effectively as the velcro, but in silence! This is a great feature for all those who need discreet access to their gear! Perfect for street shooting or weddings! In the event of you getting stuck in inclement weather, there is a small pouch underneath the personal compartment that contains a folded all-weather cover. You simply unbutton it and cover the bag with it! The process is similar to putting a fitted sheet on a mattress; there is an elastic band that keeps the cover close to the bag. Assuming that the bag has been covered properly, there are a set of two buttons which you clip around the shoulder strap. With that you have a fully protected camera bag! Conclusion This bag gives you a lot of bang for your buck! If you are looking for a bag that you can take with you on any of your photographic endeavors, I highly recommend the LowePro Pro Messenger 160 AW.Additional Information: Please note that the LowePro Pro Messenger 160 AW is only designed to hold a DSLR + attached zoom, additional small lens and flash in the main compartment. There are obviously suitable variations of this loadout, but know what you want to take with you as the "160" model may be too small. If you'd like to bring along a 70-200mm f/2.8, I'd definitely check out the Pro Messenger 180 or 200 AW! There are also some "limitations" of carrying a gripped camera in the 160 AW. Upon wearing the bag, I've noticed that it sort of bends inward when over your hip. Having a big DSLR in the middle compartment means that the side compartments get a little squeezed for space, so be cognizant of that. You might have trouble pulling a lens out at some angles. That is my reason for the 4/5 rating.Other than that I'm satisfied!

Comments about Lowepro Pro Messenger Bag 160 AW (Slate Gray):

I use this bag on a daily basis for carrying my 5D with attached 28-135 lens, extra battery, charger, flash, and memory cards. It is the perfect size for an easy to carry, on the go bag, and has just enough room in the front pocket to hold keys, a cell phone, and other small items. The velcro/magnetic closure makes it easy to access your camera quickly and the extra padded and and non slip shoulder strap makes it very comfortable for walking long distances. When I first received this bag I debated on ordering the next size larger just in case I wanted to carry other lenses or more gear. However, after taking it on one photo shoot, I realized that it's perfect as is because I don't want the additional weight of a larger bag, nor the bulk to carry since the larger bags are taller. In the future I may purchase the largest of the Pro Messengers to fully load out with gear for a long day shoot where I need multiple lenses and a lot of extras but will definitely hang on to this sized bag because it's so practical and easy to carry. It is extremely well built, well padded, and the fabric is tough and holds up. The rain cover is an added bonus and great to always have built into the bag.

Comments about Lowepro Pro Messenger Bag 160 AW (Slate Gray):

I am a DSLR user with a 2 lenses, an an on camera light. It all fits in here comfortably. What I love the most about this bag is the feel and look. It is very nice and well made. It comes with a convenient weather cover to protect it. I suggest this bag to anybody who wants a practical yet fashionable bag.
