The CobraCrane I HD Portable Crane is a lightweight portable crane designed for use with DSLR and video cameras. The 10' crane can reach a height of 14' on a 5' tripod (not included), and operate at ground level as well. It's streamlined, with several pivot points making it easy to mount higher or lower on a tripod for increased control of balance. The CobraCrane I HD's chain and sprocket design is particularly effective when using front-heavy cameras or large lenses--it helps eliminate the tendency of a large lens or heavy camera to tilt forward.

Minimal break-down time (5 minutes) means more efficient and productive shooting schedules. An improved 1/2" axle and new cable chain drive mechanism makes this an unusually versatile portable crane. The tripod quick release plate is removable, so that switching to your tripod's quick release plate for a secure fit onto your tripod head is quick and easy. The CobraCrane I HD is compatible with virtually all heavy-duty tripods including Manfrotto 501/503/504 heads. The Manfrotto 503HDV-028B is recommended for use with the CobraCrane I HD. Mounting the crane on an available tripod with a fluid head adds tilt capability.

Comments about CobraCrane I HD Portable Crane:

At this point I'd give it 2 1/2 stars, but I'm willing to round up.So the very first thing you should know before you mount your $5700 digital SLR camera on the mounting bracket is that there is a gap at the end of the bracket that will allow your camera to slide right off if the crane is jostled or tilted. Happily, this happened to me while the camera was low to the ground, and there was just some minor cosmetic damage. A bit of gaffer's tape help secure the camera better, but the trust factor for this piece of equipment went way down after that.I have ordered Cobra Crane products before and am always underwhelmed by the documentation that comes with them. You always have to make the extra effort to figure things out which should appear in a manual. Some more cons:The weight bag I ordered with the Crane, fully loaded with sand, was NOT sufficient to counterbalance the video camera I was using for a shot (a Sony Sony HDR-AX2000). I had to improvise. After a day's work there was a noticeable bow in the middle of the Crane where the two arms fit together. The recommended tripod for the Crane seems barely sufficient to support the weight. The crane, without weights or camera, was accidentally knocked over during a shoot. The wires operating the tilt broke in two places, both at points where they'd been crimped together. Repairs with a bit of baling wire were simple enough, but it wasn't much of a fall for the wires to break, imo.Once you figure out how to put it together and operate it, the Crane does okay. Gives the nice dramatic shots one would expect to take with a crane, easy to break down and transport.

Comments about CobraCrane I HD Portable Crane:

I have been using this crane for shooting video with my SLR. The multi-directional axis motion + gear-chained camera tilt control unlocks a ridiculous amount of shot possibilities. I have only begun to scratch the service of the types of shots that can be achieved with this setup. What could be better? There could be room for improvement with the durability of the harnessing/fastener clips on the gear-chain line, they can have the tendency to slip occasionally and lose tension on the line. All in all though, it's a great piece of equipment that I'd highly recommend to anyone seeking to take their video work to the next level.
