I'm sorry to say mine didn't last long. As a high school photography teacher I'm always looking for a little extra strength in the design of a product as students are often less sensitive to the handling of equipment then most professionals. So I have a special appreciation for the old SanDisk Image Mate CF card reader that has served us well for years when all other brands have failed. The problem is in the bending or pulling out of the pins. The readers work best when they include a long tunnel for the CF card to slide down which naturally aligns the pins with the sockets in the card. So when I saw Hoodman's RAW Steel unit I purchased it thinking it would give me similar service as the old SanDisk that is still in use. But alas the Hoodman lasted just a few months before the pins were bent. You could argue that abuse is abuse and any reader wouldn't survive 16 year olds who won't slow down and be careful, but the SanDisk just keeps running under the exact sam conditions. In any case, that was my experience. I hope you have better.

Comments about Hoodman USB 3.0 UDMA Reader:

This is the third Hoodman USB Card Reader I have owned. My first two Hoodman readers were both USB2. They have performed flawlessly in the field and in the studio without a single glitch. The only reason I'm upgrading to the new USB3 reader is that my two older readers were hit or miss with some of the newer model Mac laptops. I typically dump audio to my client's/producer's laptop after each project while we are still on location. I use Hoodman CF cards exclusively and I wouldn't think of using any other card reader other than Hoodman based on their past stellar performance.

Comments about Hoodman USB 3.0 UDMA Reader:

I am a sports photographer and it is essential that I download pictures quickly in order to send them to an editor. The hoodman reader is lightning fast at transferring and is durable enough to withstand the abuse I throw at it constantly. The rubber grips on the reader keep it from moving around during busy times. The pin guard is an excellent feature as well. I would highly recommend for professionals who need a durable and dependable way of transferring data.

Comments about Hoodman USB 3.0 UDMA Reader:

Shooting video on full frame DSLR fills up memory cards in minutes. Transferring them via USB 2 is a start the process and leave the room effort. USB 3 was so fast I didn't have a chnace to leave the chair.

I have a home built ASUS motherboard PC, Win 7, 8GB memory, etc. The reader worked 2 days, and then motherboard diagnostics said hardware error. It killed my USB 3 ports. I ended up adding a Rosewill 2 port card, to be able to use the reader.

As a serious photographer, an efficient download of my images is important. Yes, it functions "acceptably" as a compact flash card reader, but not exceptionally. Further, the engineering/manufacturing, to me, is questionable. It feels rough when inserting the card.

I use this CF/SD card reader to upload images from my cameras to the computer without using the camera batteries. Previous card readers have typically given me difficulties in connecting and transferring files as well as simply falling apart. This Hoodman product, like my other Hoodman products, Loupe/Eyepiece, simply did its job without requiring me to fiddle around with it to make it work. I am delighted with my first uses. I don't yet know about reliability but it seems just right to me!

Comments about Hoodman USB 3.0 UDMA Reader:

When I go on birding trips to Florida, I will usually fill up two 128 gb compact flash cards. With my old card reader it was taking forever to import the photos into Lightroom. When I purchased my new Macbook pro with the USB 3 slots, I purchased this new card reader and it cut the time down tremendously. I read others had to update firmware to read the newer faster cards, but mine came with the updated firmware already installed. The card reader is compact and appears to be very well built, I haven't used it enough to make a judgement on durability.

Comments about Hoodman USB 3.0 UDMA Reader:

I use this to transfer my video footage from my 5DmkIII (Including the RAW Magic Lantern footage) and a C100. The unit is solid feeling, built for the road -- has a door that protects the CF slot & is made of solid aluminum.

                  - It only has 2 inputs -- CF & SD readers, but it hasn't killed me yet.
                  - With large video files, it'd be nice if this came in a Thunderbolt option too.
                  - The CF tray can be a little tricky to slide.

It's a little pricey, but this thing has held up for me, worth the money.

I've often been working in media centers at sporting events, struggling with my own card reader, and notice how well the Hoodman readers seemed to work for other shooters. Finally purchased my own and I can't believe the difference. I use it with Photomechanic and Lightroom for downloads and it's screaming fast. Very durable construction so it can handle the abuse of a professional workflow.

My barely used Hoodman Steel card reader failed in Mongolia requiring a 10 hour roundtrip drive to the nearest city (an expense of about $) so that I could buy some cheap plastic CF readers in the middle of a 10 day shoot. Yeah, I was stupid for only having one CF card in the first place, well obviously I'll never do that again.I bought the Hoodman because its not cheap plastic and I figured it's a quality product. My old plastic card reader has never failed and it's downloaded hundreds of thousands of photos, maybe millions as each shoot is about 15,000 raw photos.Save your money and just buy several less expensive plastic readers or some extra memory cards. The Hoodman product is a waste of money.

Comments about Hoodman USB 3.0 UDMA Reader:

I upload CF cards onto my computer with this UDMA reader. It has always been very consistent. The speed is good. There is a slot for SDHC cards as well which I've used on occasion. I actually own two of these, one for my home and one for my office. Solid construction.

Thing is a tank. Also guides CF cards in nicely so as not to bend the internal pins.

Comments about Hoodman USB 3.0 UDMA Reader:

I have had too many CF / card readers break or otherwise stop working. So I got the industrial version and this one is definitely built to last.

Comments about Hoodman USB 3.0 UDMA Reader:

Insertion/removal of CF card is difficult. One of the center prongs became bent and shorted the reader (after very limited use). No response from Hoodman.
