I'm a videographer that does a lot of interviews and live events. Although I use a light kits for my interviews most of the time I can't carry a camera, tripod, and soft box around with my while I shoot b-roll. The Croma is the best product I have found to solve this problem.
I had used Litepanels before but thought they were a little to heavy to do a lot of handheld stuff and that they didn't put out enough light for the price. They seemed to of gotten it right with this one though. It works great as a key light when shooting events in dark locations.
The biggest selling point was that you can adjust the LED's anywhere from 3300K - 5600K. So when you are walking around shooting you can match whatever natural light is around.
Some people have complained about the cheap case but I would rather have a plastic case and less weight when I'm working all day. I've never had any flickers or the back plate fall off.

With the Croma you don't have to worry about horizontal banding and flicker at any shutter angle whether shooting with CMOS or CCD based cameras. The CRI seems decent enough when shooting events with mixed light sources too. The major problem with the Croma is the battery compartment design: the springs used to hold the batteries in do not do so and like the first generation LP Micros they want to pop out. This leads to intermittent electrical contact and can cause the light to flicker on and off when you need it most. Other problems noted are non-linear dimming and color changing - it is done in steps with a hysterisis effect. The light and color change abruptly in steps rather in a smooth fashion. The dimming potentiometers are of the analog type and susceptable to failing over a short amount of time which can cause flickering when adjusting the light's intensity(ever see the first generation LP lights do this?). A better method would have been to use rotary encoders and feed a digital signal to the circuitry controlling the led driver. With a fast sampling rate one could control the light in a more precise and repeatable manner. Other than those point this light is pretty effective in mixing in with mixed lighting sources when you don't have time to setup lights. It lasts about 40-50 minutes on freshly charged eneloops(2000mAh) on full power and draws slightly more than 12 watts, rather than the advertised 9 watts. I would recommend this light if the battery compartment issues where fixed. I can live with the other problems but having a light fail on me during a take or uncontrolled event is simply unacceptable. A quick temporary solution I found was to bend the battery tabs out a little bit more. For the price one has to pay for this fixture this shouldn't be necessary. Other minor grips are the diffusion gel: doesn't provide enough diffusion to eliminate multiple led shadows - try shooting through a few cookies and you'll see. The build quality should have been made out of metal and not plastic, feels flimsy . The tungsten balanced leds project a spot rather than a flood pattern like the daylight balanced leds. A good concept but should have spent more time in the lab at the bench before releasing this light.

Comments about Litepanels Croma On-Camera LED Light:

This thing is cheap and plastic.
Battery compartment is the worst. It takes 10 tries and a act of a Thor to make the batteries work.
Not that bright. Only helps in VERY dark locations.

Can someone make a better variable color led panel already?

I expected the 6 AA batteries to last longer than they did. I tried to use this overseas last year and ended-up having to shoot without since the batteries died within 20 minutes of full-power use. The light was okay in close-up situations, but not very useful beyond 7 feet.

Great light, continous balance between daylight and indoors. Nice output for it's size, can be used not just on camera but as additional lighting around the set. It's larger than the picture looks, pushing the limits of anything I want on top of my camera and the battery compartment lid wants to pop open. Outside of that it's great!

Found good enough for my Pro event shoots especially in low lit rooms shooting dinner tables and people socialising.

Comments about Litepanels Croma On-Camera LED Light:

This is a versatile light with great output, flexibility and good build quality. While it is a large unit compared to something like Lowel's offering, it is not heavy or cumbersome. It has good throw distance, and accepts diffusion well.

However, there are drawbacks. The knobs have no detents at all, save for off, which makes repeatability difficult at best. This is compounded by the need to keep the light off while not rolling, particularly if you are using it at or near full intensity, which you may be doing if you're using diffusion.

In testing, we found that when using AA batteries as a source (either 2900 mAh rechargeable or Duracell disposables), at full intensity, it only lasted about 20 minutes. At half intensity, it lasted about 6 hours. The killer was that if you used it at full intensity for 20 minutes, it takes several minutes to replace the AA batts - a big no-no with talent and producer waiting. That was why we eventually returned the Croma. If you power via the DC jack somehow, this may not be an issue, but be sure to test before you shoot.

Light and portable, no flicker, two tempratures in one device by two sets of leds, which I believe is more accurate then the plastic colored cover found on other devices. Use it as video light and as a second flash which needs no triggering. Usefull for macro work as well.

Comments about Litepanels Croma On-Camera LED Light:

This light is incredibly light, portable and lets a documentary crew jump from indoors to outdoors with no lag time at all. My only complaint is that it is very sensitive to humidity and temperature and will shut itself down if the weather is not to its liking.

Purchased two Croma, it was great addition to field production kit (video/photo). Small and light, when you just need a quick fill or color enrichment it was easy. I am very happy with the product, I just wish it has less plastic should give it a more quilty feel.
