Summary: This bag is beautiful, versatile, well-made, carries quite a lot of stuff for the size and feels very comfortable on your shoulder. The only negative is access to the contents of the front pocket. If you need to carry a 14" or smaller laptop along with a fair bit of gear, you'll be hard-pressed to do it with this much style and usability anywhere else. Just wish the front pocket was more accessible.

    Full Review:

    Overall thoughts:
I was able to put my D90, 80-200 f/2.8, 28-75 f/2.8 (mounted), 18-200, 35 f/1.8, a blower, a couple batteries and other cables, etc. as well as my 14" ThinkPad, iPhone, a USB hard drive and ThinkPad tablet (10"). That is a lot of gear to fit in something so small-looking. Quality seems excellent throughout, though time will always tell. All the leather, the fabric and the stitching seemed very solid and well done.

The bag deals with bulk reasonably well. The buckles are high-quality. I was kind of hoping that you'd be able to press on the outside of the buckle to release/open, but it doesn't appear to work like that. Slightly fiddly. Others have told me the buckles can be used like that, but it didn't seem to work like that for me.

The handle looks like it would be unbalanced, especially when loaded. It isn't, at least for light movement and picking it up/putting it down.

It carries very well - I'm amazed how light it feels vs. the same gear in my Lowepro AW200 on my back.

The gear carries well overall. The 80-200 has plenty of depth, though the pockets are shallow enough that the foot worried me. I pulled the shallow divider out from the "body pocket" and made a full-height space for the lens. No worries. The foot does provide some dimension to think about - I kept it turned toward the compartment with the shorter lens vs. the body compartment.

With all the stuff inside, I did need to extend the buckles to allow closure.

    The bad/gripes:
There should be a "pull-strap" on the buckle to help pull the buckle.
The front pocket is very, very tight. Even when it isn't loaded, access to the front pocket is unnecessarily tight. A simple, minimal flap or gusset to allow a broadening of the opening would have been all that was necessary. There are spaces for a cell phone, memory cards and other stuff (I threw in a USB hard drive, a couple extra batteries, some cleaning supplies, etc. Net: My issues isn't so much with the space, but the access to it.

Ultimately, I decided to return it as I think for the money this thing costs the access should be easy, but I'm probably more picky about that than most people. It is a gorgeous and capable bag.

I had high hopes for this bag, given the obvious dedication towards making a camera-specific messenger bag. Unfortunately, for my purpose of carrying a full-size DSLR, telephoto (100-400), and at least two other lenses and related equipment, it simply did not work.

Of particular note is the fact that the front compartment is very tight to the body of the bag, and it is difficult to retrieve items from the compartment...scraped hands from the zipper were the result. Also noteworthy is that the strap is somewhat short, and did not facilitate my average build (6' tall, large athletic torso) able to put the bag on my hip...it fell a few inches short.

The bag is beautifully built, and will certainly serve someone who does not need a larger amount of camera gear, and/or has small hands that can easily access the front compartment without scraping their hands on the zipper.

    Worth the cash

Comments about Union Street Messenger Bag (Ranger Tan):

I've had the bag for several years. It's serves double duty and a computer bag and camera bag. It comfortably holds a 5dmkiii with the 24-105mm l lens, batteries and charger, a 12 inch dell convertible laptop with plug, dragon mike, mouse and a color checker passport. If I remove the computer accessories (but leave the actual computer), it can also hold my nifty fifty and 100 mm macro lens. The front pouch is tight, but useable enough to hold the charger, lens pen and SD cards. I have dropped this from shoulder level on 2 occasions, the gear was well protected! I love this bag. The fabric getting a mild beautifully distinct distressed look. However it doesn't look old or worn at all. I'm rough on this bag. The seams are as tight as the day I recieved it. It will definitely stand the test of time!

I had been concerned about this being able to fit my clunky old 2010 15" Macbook Pro but with the interior panel reversed it fits great. It's perfect for my daily work needs and as a compact travel photography setup for laptop and a Leica M assortment.

Comments about Union Street Messenger Bag (Ranger Tan):

I use this for travel or when I'm not taking my full DSLR kit. I can fit a 14" HP Ultrabook and an iPad air in the laptop part. I can carry a Hasselblad XPan II rangefinder, a Panasonic GM1 microfour thirds, a Sony RX100 II and then assorted bits like laptop charger, spare batteries, sunglasses. Or the XPan and a batch of lens without the other cameras. Alternatively I can fit my 7D with a 17-55 lens and perhaps one of the smaller cameras. The bag is quite attractive. And sturdy and resists rain. Just about the right size, not too big and not too small. Not super heavy when loaded. The only nits are that the buckles are suspect of getting lost and there might be a little less space in the front pocket than there could be.

Great bag. Well, actually any Ona bag is a good decision and a great investment! The waxed canvas and leather construction make this bag rugged, good looking and water resistant.

It's best uses are as a day bag or if you shoot weddings like me, a place to keep your spare lenses, a speed light and other misc. gear that you need to keep on you at all times through out the day. Since this is a messenger bag, you are forced to only bring with you what you absolutely need which keeps the bag light and easy to manage. The leather pad on the bottom is keeps your gear safe if you drop your bag or place it down too far as well as keep your bag upright when you place it down. No more worries of you bad tipping over ever again!

I am quite happy with this purchase and would definitely recommend the Union Street Messenger Bag to a friend.

I have been shooting film since I was in Jr. High, now I'm 30 and have started getting into wedding and contract photography with my sister and decided I needed a proper digital rig, and a bag that is professional looking and large enough for me to shoot weddings with. After alot of looking around and reading reviews, I decided to give this bag a try, and I am so very glad I did! Exceeded my expectations of quality, and is a big larger than I assumed from reading reviews online. It also filled my requirements of not being made in China or India in some sweat shop. The bag itself is quite roomy for me, but I am not using the laptop sleeve. The front pocket is easy to access with what I have inside the bag. Really love the memory card slots, and the two phone size slots, very nice and handy! What I put inside:Pentax K-3 with battery gripPentax DA 50mm 1.8 lensSigma 16mm to 250mm LensOlder Pentax FA 70mm to 200mm LensLens hoodYachica 14e Film Rangefinder or Canon AE-1 (depending on what I feel like or want)8 rolls film (more or lessLens Filters (in side pocket)4 memory cards (2 in camera 2 in pack)Moto x Phone (front pocket)Snacks and notepad (in front pocket)Extra batteries and charger (in other side pocket)Tablet or Chromebook (in the Back Pouch)Bottom line its a nice bag, and I would buy ONA again without hesitation!

I have a Canon 60D that normally has 17-55mm f 2.8 and a grip attached. It fits, but, in order to do so, I can't have a laptop in it, not a huge deal since I never shoot tethered. It carries my telephoto and flash easily, and the weight is nicely distributed. It looks amazing, and I've had to take it through a surprise rainstorm and it kept everything perfectly dry. Its $, but its totally worth it.

Comments about Union Street Messenger Bag (Smoke):

I am a wedding and portrait photographer and end up traveling a lot for both. Up until I bought the Union Street I used a Kata backpack when I had to travel for a wedding. It fit everything I needed, but I didn't like shooting weddings with a backpack as I prefer a messenger style bag to access my gear. At home I had been using the Crumpler 7 Million Dollar home which I've been happy with for years but wanted something a little more stylish to carry around and that I could use when I travel.

This bag is perfect for all the uses I need. When traveling, if fits all my gear:
                                Canon 6D
                                Canon 5D
                                Canon 70-200mm L
                                Canon 50mm
                                Canon 35mm
                                Canon 85mm

Plus batteries, sd cards and my wallet. It also fits my Macbook Pro 13inch laptop, although as others have said- when you have a laptop in the bag it makes it a little harder to close the clasps. This doesn't really bother me though as I've found that the flap stays closed.

The materials are amazing, well worth the price. The bag looks sleek and feels durably made. This isn't really advertised well on the page, but the accessory area of the bag has four built in leather SD card holding slots! I was happily surprised when I saw these!

The bag fits perfectly under the seat in front of you on a plane with plenty of extra leg room, which I never had with my Kata bag. I've traveled 4 times on an airplane since purchasing this bag a month ago and I love it! I have no complaints other than it being a little hard to close when you have a laptop in there, but that doesn't bother me much as I only bring my laptop with me when traveling.

You can't fit too much in the zip up accessory area, but I don't mind it, it fits my three camera batteries, cards and about 16 AA batteries which is what I usually need.

                                Highly recommended.

Comments about Union Street Messenger Bag (Ranger Tan):

I've been using this bag to carry my Fuji mirrorless kit (X-Pro1, X-E1, 5 lenses) while shooting around New York City for the last few days. Overall, I like the bag a lot. I changed the organization of the dividers so that the cameras can easily be slipped in and out of the bag with a lens attached to each, and the other lenses stored at the bottom. I can access either camera very quickly when I spot something I want to shoot.

The bag is much better suited to smaller, mirrorless cameras. I don't think I could comfortably put my Canon dSLRs and lenses into this bag, even without the battery grips.

As others have pointed out though, the front pocket becomes almost useless when you have camera gear loaded into the main compartment. The pocket just isn't loose enough, and getting anything in or out is not easy.

Also, the closing straps need to be about an inch longer. Using the buckle in the last hole of the straps means the straps do not fit far enough through the loops. I'm concerned that one of the buckles is going to fall off and be lost some day.

I love that it doesn't look like a camera bag. To the outside world, it's just a messenger bag. The strap is long enough that I can wear it across my body, which I find more comfortable than hanging the bag straight down on one side.

There does seem to be some variance in the colours. The bag on display at B&H is much much lighter than what is shown in the picture on the website. Mine is darker than the display bag, but not nearly as dark as the website photos.

Overall I'm happy with the purchase, and would buy it again.

I really wanted to buy a bag from ONA, they look great and seem very durable. They also have a great combination of camera bag/computer bag design.
I finally tried it out and found out it would not work for me. I typically wear the bag over my left shoulder and I'm tall. The strap is designed so that when fully extended and used over the left shoulder the strap pad and clasp fall in an odd location that doesn't allow for the pad to be on your shoulder. If it were possible to remove the pad or flip the strap it would be a fantastic bag. I would make sure to try it out before you buy it if that is possible since it may sit funny on your shoulder.

Comments about Union Street Messenger Bag (Smoke):

Let me start off by saying the Ona Union Street Messenger is a great bag. The build quality is fantastic. Stitching, clasps, material, all top of the line, and it really should be for close to $300. One of the best features is that it sits up due to the leather bottom on its own. This is great for when you are out shooting, you don't have to lean it up against anything. It comes with three sub dividable Velcro separators to create 4 compartments for your gear. I carry a Nikon 40DX, with a Nikor 50mm, A Nikor 18-55mm, A Tonkia 12-24mm, as well as, a Panasonic DMC-LX5. All these items fit no problem. The BUT is… it seems every time I look for a bag that specifies 'it fits' a 15" laptop in the product description, always be wary that this always seems to be a 15" Mac Book Pro. I carry the 2013 redesigned Dell XPS 15 (which is a 15" laptop) but does not fit very well in the laptop slot. It sticks out the top of the bag slightly and I have to use the clasps on its fullest extension. It barely snaps, but it works. So if you look at the bag in elevation, you can see the bump from the top of the laptop under the main flap. I have owned a Crumpler 'Dreadful Embarrassment' for 8 years and you can fit everything, plus the kitchen sink in that bag, but it is not really made to carry your photog equipment in. I swore by Crumpler for years, but their materials have a 'younger' look to them, where as the Ona Union Street works when I meet with clients (Im an Architect too.) I highly recommend this bag.
