The Manfrotto 502HD Pro Video Head with 75mm Half-Ball is an affordable yet remarkably full-featured professional head that represents an advance over the popular 501HDV, with sturdier construction and a half-ball for precise leveling on a corresponding tripod. The 502HD comes in two versions -- the "A" ball-base version, which this one is, and the "AH" flat-base version, which is separately available.

Also featuring Manfrotto's patented bridging technology (inherited from the 509HD and 504HD heads), the 502HD is designed for executing cinematic moves with compact camcorders and DSLR video cameras. The weight limit is 15.43 lb and counterbalance supports up to 8.8 lb. The balance plate's 3.27" range allows you to correct for uneven payloads that might be due to matte boxes or exotic DSLR rig configurations.

The bridging technology ensures that the pan friction control is intuitive and easy to set, but also protected against knocks. There are of course independent locks for pan and tilt, and drag for both is selectable in a continuous range from zero to the max level. This allows you to operate the head in a confident, smooth manner using the included pan bar.

Very light weigth. SMOOTH - SMOOTH - SMOOTH...it's like butter. Finger touch controls. The pan and tilt work beaufitully and lock down when needed. Adjustments are precise and are easy to navigate through. Tensioning through the precise Fluid Drag System is a BIG Plus, Customize it to your own Personal touch. It's a perfect Pro Tool that is light but has all the features of the bigger heads. I't a Joy to use and reasonably priced! It's clean Italian design and funcitonality puts it head and shoulders above the rest!

This head baffles me. And for the price, I should have known it'd be terrible. Reasoning:

-the pan lock is located in the center of the cutout at the front of the head (making it extremely difficult to lock off a shot). Heck, it's difficult to lock the pan no matter what. The knob is tucked away so you can't get to it.
-the tilt lock is located on the right side of the head, meaning that it is impossible to lock off a shot during filming if you're a righty.
-now this wouldn't be as much of an issue if this actually had an adjustable counterbalance system. but it doesn't. so good luck having the camera stay put when you want to finish a movement.

So if you're actually planning to do work with this head, don't bother. I'm sending mine back and buying a proper head (as this isn't usable for even very simple work, and it would be a waste of cash). Even if you're trying to learn, this bears no resemblance to a professional-grade fluid head, so you'll just be doing yourself a disservice. I will say that it is sufficiently heavy, large, and well made. It's just not designed for video work at all.

502HD is great! very smooth. If you are upgrading from the 501HDV you are going to have deal with the new layout of controls. Pan lock is in front and not the back. The tilt drag adjustment is on the left and tilt lock is on the right.

With this head having a rebate on it as well it can't be beat. If you can get the ball version of the head instead of the flat, go with the ball. Makes it 1000 Times easier to balance.

Comments about Manfrotto 502HD Pro Video Head with 75mm Half-Ball:

If you're doing videography, no doubt you've heard of a video head. The 502 head holds to a very popular standard by videographers and photographers alike, namely because you will not find any other product at this quality at this price range.

The build is almost completely made of metal and highly durable. The results I've gotten from using the head thus far have exceeded my expectations from the get go. Pans are silk smooth and with a little technique, it'll seem as though your videos were shot with a motorized system.

This video head however, is only made to be used on Manfrotto tripod legs so be weary of that fact before your purchase.

I am a professional videographer using a compact video camera for some shoots. I tried the Manfrotto 500 before deciding on the 502. I found the 500 to be a little light for my camera but the 502 is ideal. I also appreciate the adjustable pan & tilt drag as well as the counter balance spring. This head performs as well on my smaller camera as the larger more expensive Sachtler does for my ENG camera.

I've been in video production for the past 20 years, and have gravitated towards the Monfrotto/Bogen for the quality vs. price relationship. I had the much larger 516 head for the larger JVC KY27/Beta SP back, and then eventually to the smaller JVC 500 video camera. Now I have the Canon 5D M3, and I like the feel of this 502 much better than the 516! This new Bridging and spring technology has produced a smoother, adustable tension and drag, and I can pan and tilt much smoother, even with a smaller camera. I am placing the 502 head on top of my older Manfrotto 515MV legs (need to have a 100mm to 75mm ball adapter), which has a (removable) spreader at the bottom. I don't mind the extra weight, in exchange for the stability. 502: great performance, for a great price.

Great fluid head at a affordable price. Can't go wrong. I have three tripod heads, this one, the cartoni delta and a Benro S6. And I'm happy with this one!

Bought a 503v head and tripod combo off [*] and then after reading the many reviews about the 502 HD decided to purchase it for use with my Canon 60D and couldn't be happier. Order came in on time, product was exactly as advertised and even got it during a rebate. Couldn't be happier!

Used heavily in the outdoors in harsh conditions. So far it's held up great. Pan and tilt adjust and lock easily. Only complaint is that the ball lock ocassionally hits the legs when they are folded in. The lock from the 504 is round and never has that problem. Minor thing so that's why 4 and not 5 stars.

It's a nice head, but I preferred to use a 100 mm half-ball, so I returned this one (75 mm) for the flat base head. I like the head very much.

We shoot a variety of video projects, from legal to sports and so far, I'm in love with the 502HD. I really like the ease of adjusting the tension on tilts and pans and the sliding plate is perfect for our Sony camera, which is very top heavy due to its large lens. I think we got a very good head for the price.

The first head I received had a nasty wobble when panning. Seemed to go away when the drag was tightened but almost unusable otherwise. B&H quickly replaced it without hassle. Great customer service. As for the head it doesn't prevent the camera from falling forwards and back like more expensive heads. The new one doesn't wobble at least. I was hoping for better quality but for less than $[$] with a rebate I am satisfied with it for most uses.

I use this tripod head with about six pounds of gear attached and it handles it like a champ. The only setback is that, if left connected for a long time the quick release slide sticks, other than that, it was a definate upgrade from my previouse tripod head. The pan and tilt are very smooth, and stedy.

Old head broke and bought this one in a pinch, but it's turned out to be a really nice head. The amount of drag pre-built into tilt is really nice, and of course manual drag improvements make it even better. The big footprint of the plate is nice for balancing as it can slide for and aft long and easily.

My only grip about this head is the location for pan lock, which is underneath the plate support and towards the front. It can be tricky to get to from the back (that's what she said) but it's really a small complaint. The pan drag is VERY nice on this head.

Overall, great head, easy controls for it and nice weight.

Comments about Manfrotto 502HD Pro Video Head with 75mm Half-Ball:

Perfect fit for my Gitzo legs. My Gitzo head needed replacing so I emailed the sales department at B&H and they revommended this head to fit onto the existing legs. I also had specific questions regarding specifications and they were very helpful and quick at answering my questions.

The head arrived quickly and fit perfectly.

Another plus was that the Manfrotto head that I bought was offering a rebate.
