Bursting at the seams with features and functions, the silver Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera Body wants to take what you think you know about Micro Four Thirds shooting, and turn it on its ear. The GX1 camera body boasts a number of built-in capabilities, not to mention compatibility with numerous lenses, including a 3D interchangeable lens. Additionally, in-camera editing and various other modes for producing professional-looking pictures, enhance the face value of this remarkable little machine.

The GX1 embodies the hallmarks of a Micro Four Thirds camera - a compact body (thanks to its mirror-less design), stellar resolution with the 16.0Mp Live MOS Sensor, and the aforementioned multiple lens compatibility with LUMIX G and Leica DG lenses. Additionally, the Venus Engine provides for fast processing of files, noise reduction, and smooth operation of the camera's many modes. The GX1 also boasts a sleek design with easy to operate dials and buttons. Other design considerations include the 3.0" touch enabled LCD, the built-in flash, and the right-side grip.

The shooting functions of the GX1 are centered around the ultra high-speed, ultra-precise autofocus options. They allow you to take accurate, in-focus photos, without having to manually focus, with an emphasis on motion photography. This is evidenced with the 0.09 second Light Speed AF which is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by syncing the lens and the sensor at 120 frames per second. High-precision Contrast AF grants high accuracy, even when shooting at small F value, because focusing is controlled by the image sensor. Additionally, you can use Full-area Focusing with Touch AF, which allows you to set focus on any point in the field of view using the touch screen LCD. Other AF features include Pinpoint AF options, Touch AF in video recording, a flexible AF/MF mode button on the camera, and high-speed consecutive shooting.

Like its predecessors in the Micro Four Thirds genre, the GX1 also captures high def video. Boasting 1920 x 1080 HD video in the AVCHD (MPEG4/H.264) format, the camera produces movies that look great on HDTVs, HD monitors, and the like. Within the video features the camera can do a number of useful, fun, and creative things. One such example is its ability to capture 11.5Mp stills from video. Others include high quality sound with the Dolby Digital Stereo Creator, Touch AF for video recording, multiple creative controls and photo style options - including miniature effect, and Intelligent Auto Mode, which takes the guesswork out of capturing video. Of course, the in-camera editing options and the included software allow for manipulation, sharing, and more.

Numerous other features give you a creative edge when shooting with the GX1. These in-camera features and functions help you take normal snapshots and turn them into unique works of art! The aforementioned Creative Control mode works with still photos as well as video. Enjoy the options within this feature, including Expressive, for a pop art style, Retro, for the appearance of a tarnished photo, Sepia, for an antique look, and Toy Effect, which creates the same type of vignetting produced by a toy camera. Other options are available with this feature too. Additional functions of the camera include Touch Defocus Control, for artful focusing, and Photo Style, for manually choosing from 6 color types, among others.

Basic Principle of LUMIX G Image Quality
Create high-quality photo images with true-to-life details with excellent resolution, image rendering and color reproduction

  • High-grade lens and precision AF: Natural and high resolution images with digital dedicated lenses and high-speed and precise contrast AF
  • Inheriting the Leica philosophy: High resolution (MTF); No distortion; No ghosts or flaring
  • Optimal balance of resolution and noise reduction for life-like rendering: Natural and life-like images from low to high sensitivity setting, with intelligent NR control
  • High precision AE and WB with Live Light Metering for faithful color reproduction: Optimal exposure and accurate white balance from low to high contrast, with Live TTL direct metering
16.0Mp Live MOS Sensor
The 16.0Mp Live MOS sensor plays a big role in high quality image rendering. With the dedicated circuit, which reads out signals with minimum noise, the level of noise is significantly suppressed by more than 66%. In shooting at high ISO setting, S/N (Signal-to-Noise) value is improved by approx. 200% compared with the conventional 12.1 megapixel sensor. The sensor performance improves by 6db at ISO 3200 and max. 9db at ISO 6400, resulting in the dramatically flawless image without noise
High-Sensitivity Shooting Up to ISO 12800
Taking full advantage of the Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine, images can shot in low-lit situations at with clarity and quality. The 12800 high ISO sensitivity setting is stunningly clear with sharp resolution
Venus Engine
In addition to the high-speed signal processing, thanks to the 3 CPUs, the image processor Venus Engine boasts its excellent performance with an adoption of noise reduction technology for an even higher quality image. By separating chromatic noise from luminance noise even more accurately by applying the optimal noise reduction to each, you can capture clear and beautiful images even when shooting at high ISO sensitivity levels
Micro Four Thirds System Standard
By adopting the Micro Four Thirds System standard, the DMC-GX1 features a mirrorless structure that eliminates the mirror box and optical viewfinder unit. This carefully preserves the image quality while maintaining a compact profile, and provides you with even higher levels of performance in a digital interchangeable lens system camera
LUMIX G / Leica DG Lenses
The main appeal of an interchangeable lens system camera is the ability to achieve a wider range of expression by changing the lens. The DMC-GX1 lets you use the versatile lineup of Micro Four Thirds System standard lenses, including the LUMIX G / Leica DG lenses
Intelligent D-range Control
The Intelligent D-range Control offers even more natural looking images by optimizing the exposure for each part of an photo, preventing blocked shadows and blown highlights and helping ensure that gradation and details are reproduced beautifully, including the blue color of the sky. An automatic backlight compensation function is activated whenever the camera detects the subject in backlight
Intelligent Resolution Technology
With the Intelligent Resolution technology, 3 areas - outlines, detailed texture areas, and soft gradation areas - are automatically detected. Apart from the uniform enhancement of sharpness, the innovative technology, Intelligent Resolution precisely performs signal processing pixel by pixel in the most effective way for a particular area. As a result images are naturally clear and crisp in both photo and video recording
Sophisticated Design, Functional Beauty
  • One: Panasonic crafted a mode dial that is supremely easy to grip and turn. Additionally, the characters are laser printed, making them easy to see and able to stand up to the test of time.
  • Two: The ergonomically designed grip fits the DMC-GX1's flat profile, yet is easy to hold. Its tactile feel offers the shooter comfort thanks to its resin construction
  • Three: Optimum layout of control buttons and the mode dial, turn-and-press dial, and dedicated function buttons make the operation of the DMC-GX1 smooth and easy
Thoughtfully Designed Camera
As a camera from the premium GX line of the LUMIX G Micro System, the external design of the camera has been developed with no compromising in any detail. Available in silver and black, the DMC-GX1 offers luxurious comfort for the shooting experience with stunning performance and a host of functions
Level Gauge
The Level Gauge lets the camera detect the horizontal / vertical angle of view with its internal level, which works with the acceleration sensor. Photos shot in a portrait aspect will be automatically displayed vertically no matter which lens is used
Built-In Flash (GN7.6 Equivalent)
In spite of its compact size, the DMC-GX1's built-in flash has a light intensity that is equivalent to GN7.6, and you can adjust the intensity within a range of +/-EV 2 in 1/3 EV steps. It also lets you use 1st curtain sync. flash and 2nd curtain sync. flash to capture nightscapes with a natural flow of light
Customization for Comfortable Shooting
Meticulous attention was paid to operating ease when designing the DMC-GX1. The body design allows you to freely customize settings. The DMC-GX1 provides uncompromising performance, and delivers the ultimate in intuitive operation and shooting
Touch Screen Operation
The DMC-GX1 gives you smooth touch control shooting. When recording, you can operate the auto focus and shutter release at the same time with just a touch. When playing back, you can drag the image across the screen with your finger
Touch Zoom
Zoom operation can be controlled with touch when the Power Zoom lens for the LUMIX G Micro System is attached. Speed of zooming can be adjusted in 2 steps
3.0" High Resolution LCD
The DMC-GX1 has a 3.0" 3:2 460,000 dot LCD with a 100% field of view. Additionally, it has a wide-viewing angle that lets you frame your shot in a variety of ways for both shooting and review. LUMIX's acclaimed Intelligent LCD function also automatically adjusts the brightness in 11 steps, according to shooting conditions. It lets you share the fun of viewing images with family and friends, too
Double Live View for the LCD and the Optional LVF
Both the LCD and the optional DMW-LVF2 (Live View Finder) give you a Full-time Live View of what you're shooting, with a field of view of approximately 100%. The viewing method can be selected to match your shooting conditions and composition, which makes them ideal for active shooting. You can confirm the depth of field and shutter speed effects by pressing the function button, if you select the preview mode
Dust Reduction System
If dust or other foreign matter gets inside the camera when you're changing lenses, it could cling to the image sensor and show up as a spot in your photos. The Dust Reduction System in the DMC-GX1 helps eliminate this possibility by placing the Supersonic Wave Filter in front of the Live MOS sensor, between the low-pass filter and shutter. Vibrating vertically around 50,000 times per second, the filter repels dust and other particles effectively

Flow of the Dust Reduction System:
1. Power off
2. When the camera is turned on, the filter vibrates to shake off dirt and dust
3. The dirt and dust adhere to the absorption part to prevent it from appearing in the sensor image

Extended Battery Life
With further optimization of the electric design, the DMC-GX1 excels in energy consumption and features approximately 11% longer battery life than the DMC-G3, which complies with the same battery pack, the DMW-BLD10
Compatible with UHS-I Standard SDHC/SDXC Memory Cards
The DMC-GX1 is compatible with the UHS-I standard for SDXC/SDHC memory cards, taking advantage of its high-speed data transmission
0.09 Second Light Speed AF
The DMC-GX1 features 0.09 seconds of Light Speed AF, which is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by the synchronization of the lens and the sensor at 120 fps. Not only the accuracy, but also the speed, surpasses high-end digital SLRs with phase-difference AF with the advanced contrast AF system in the DMC-GX1
High-Precision Contrast AF System
Compared with the phase-difference system AF, the contrast AF of the DMC-GX1 boasts higher accuracy even when shooting at a small F value. The phase-difference AF system is susceptible to mechanical margin of error. However, in the contrast AF system, focusing is controlled by the image sensor so that no mechanical margin of error occurs, resulting in precise focusing

I got this GX1 as a backup for my Olympus OMD-5. The GX1 is a real good value at $239(without kit lens). As I do have quite a few Micro 4/3rd's lenses which the GX1 uses coupled with this super nice price it was a no-brainer.I have been very pleased with the GX1. The menu system is really nice. You have a lots ofoptions to customize the menu system to your liking. I have a Sony NEX7, Sony NEX5, Olympus OMD-5, Fuji X100, Fuji X20, Sony RX100 as well as several Nikon DSR's - I have also had some Canon DSLR's and tested Pentax and Panasonic Lumix GH3 and others, and I must say that the GX1 has one of the best and most logical menu system - Of course it hasa touch screen which is easy to use and not to forget to mention that it has Touch To Focus and TouchTo Shoot - so you can just point your finger at a place on the screen where you want it to focus and then shoot the picture. It is a very nice option and not many cameras have that at that price range. It would have been nice to have a tiltible LCD display for low and high shooting - but one cannot ask for the world for that price. The built is awesome and the feel of the buttons is first class. The Auto Focus Speed is blazing fast - and close or not about the same as the Olympus OMD-5 which isawesome. The GX1 does not quite measure up in image quality as the Olympus OMD-5. The main area I wouldsay that it lacks in is in the shadows - but the Image Quality is very good regardless - but I have making a comparison with the top Micro 4/3rd's camera out there which costs a lot more and so not quite a fair comparison. The Lumix GX1 is a pure joy to use as it is so well layed out and is really easy to use for those who just want to have things on Auto -The size is perfect and it has a really nice grip - of course it does not have the sexy looks of the Olympus OMD-5 or say the Fuji X100/s but it has a much nicer grip so it feels very solid in thehand as well as having good looks. I prefer the solid black. I later found out that Gordon Lane from Cameralabs uses the GX1 has his primary travel camerawhen I wants to travel light. and I can see why - Panasonic Lumix makes really nice lensesand the Zoom 14-42 kit lens is a very nice kit lens one of the best kit lenses out there. There is alos a nice seletion of primes available for the GX1.So if you would like to step up from point and shoot cameras but without the bulk and size and weight of DSLR's and without breaking the bank then the Panasonic Lumix GX1 is one of the bestvalues out there. So well built and great buttons and many function button options that make it so easy and fast to get to your function without diving through menu system. Touch To Shoot is awesomeand you will be blown away how fast it auto focus's. The video options are also good. The key is to compare what you get for your money - it is easy to say that another camera has better video or this or that - but for the money this camera is a great value and very easy to use for beginner but also a joy for those who are more advanced as they have quick access to desired functions.I am glad I found about the Lumix GX1 and of course I did a good research on it which all say thesame thing - a really nice camera.I would suggest that as an option to the kit lens you which is great and compact - thatif you needed more zoom to look at the Panasonic Lumix 14-140 f3-5.6 - a very nice allaround lens. Also the Panasonic Lumix 20mm f 1.7 for low light situations. If you shoot in RAW then you will be happy with the write speed - it also as all the aspect formats like 1:1 4:3 3:2 16:9 it can also write RAW and JPEG together.Pros:Great price for what you getSolid buildNice gripLooks niceSuper fast Auto Focus Nice image Quality Super nice menu system Lots of options to customize functions4 FN buttons Touch screen with Touch To Focus and Touch To ShootImage affectsFast startup time and really no Lag TimeCons:Might be a bit better in the shawdow areas - always easy to boost in Lightroom etc. Maybe a bit better battery life

The camera was a good price and does take beautiful pictures but I am limiting myself to using it only when I won't distract others with the loud shutter. I have also found that I can't keep the camera as stable with the shutter vibration so do often use the electronic only shutter which reduces the mega pixels when I can't use a tripod. I bought the 20mm lens with the camera and they do make a nice set.

I LOVE THE TOUCH SCREEN. It is so nice to pull the focus with both stills and video.

The camera was such a good price and it really does take beautiful pictures. I would not have kept the camera if I had paid full price for it.

While this is an excellent camera, it is almost too much for an amateur like myself. I have been trying to learn how to utilize the many features, but it seems as if there are more than I will ever be able to use. I am however enjoying the challenge; may even eventually understand most of it...

Comments about LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera Body (Black):

I purchased this camera to use when a heavy DSLR was not practical to carry and with the hopes of using it for digiscoping. This is my first 4/3 camera and it is a learning process. The lack of an EVF is a bit of a problem in bright light particularly when digiscoping. The ability to use a remote was a big plus. The focus touch screen is great and helps to zoom in on the intended area. For the sale price when I purchased, it was a great buy. A good backup camera even if I upgrade in the future.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera Body (Black):

This camera has exceeded my expectations. I am an enthusiast and own a Nikon D7000. This is what I love about it: It is very well built, made in Japan... You know that it is very well made as soon as you hold it... The ISO speed and the white balance are right are your fingertips, and there are other customization options. I use the other one for the metering mode. but there are more options with the touch screen. The screen is not a 1 million dots screen but it is very, very nice. I don't miss the one on the Nikon, I like this one a lot! I did not know how much I was missing a smaller camera... and the quality is close to my D7000. It does not match the Nikon for Fill in Flash but I am learning to bounce the flash, and this is something that you cannot do with any of the DSLR's onboard flash. I am exchanging mine for another one since the first one had stains on the sensor :(. Thanks to the great people at B&H, the exchange process has been completely painless so far. I feel safe with B&H.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera Body (Black):

A small backup Olympus camera, the E-PM1, introduced me to the Micro Four Thirds world last year & since then, I've abandoned my heavy DSLR kit in favour of a later generation, higher end model Olympus. I couldn't resist the sales pricing on the GX1 to test drive a Panasonic camera & it too is excellent. Actually, it's just silly how good it is at the current sale price. It's a little bigger & chunkier than my Olympus but that may even suit my bigger hands a little better. It feels solid & well built, capable of sustaining abuse & it's become the camera that's always with me now.

If I were to dig for criticisms, I would like a slightly beefier thumb wheel on the back & it would have been nice to have had the option to use the silent electronic shutter in all modes, rather than just in Super High speed shooting with the smaller low res images.

That aside, this is a really good camera, an all round work horse, an excellent travel camera, & I would definitely recommend it.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera Body (Black):

My camera is my diary and I like to take it to many places. Weight and dimensions are a factor and I embraced the introduction of the Panasonic G1 which shrank the dimensions to a fraction of an SLR yet delivered images that rivaled my 35mm Kodachromes. Also, I had a few idle lenses from Leica, Nikon and Sigma, a microscope and bellows. All of these came to new life with appropriate adapters. I felt I could keep another camera body busy and I bought the Panasonic GX 1. While I always liked the 12 Megapixel sensor of the G1 the 16 Megapixel sensor is superior still, beyond just simple pixel count. There are lots of additional features and to tame them all will take some time. I like the form factor and in time I expect to buy the EVF which is one thing I really miss. There is something pleasurable about holding this instrument in your hand and the ultimate proof is in the pictures it takes.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera Body (Black):

Upgrading from the GF1 to the GX1 didn't leave me as blown away as I remember being when I first got the GF1. But that doesn't mean it isn't a worthy successor to one of the best (consumer-level) cameras of all time.

The changes between the two are definitely evolutionary over revolutionary, and as such wouldn't have been worth upgrading from the GF1 for anything more than the low low prices you're finding now. That isn't to say I haven't been thoroughly enjoying my time with the GX1, but is just that the GF1 left huge shoes to fill.

In real life, you can hardly notice the difference in weight or dimensions from the GF1 to the GX1 despite the marginal improvements in both regards on the part of the GX1. Though the depth of the camera body is indeed shallower, the more pronounced grip on the GX1 technically means it's thicker than the GF1. But to be honest, you'll actually appreciate the larger (and rubberized) grip so much more, which allows you to keep a better hold of the camera and in turn should increase your chances of steadier shots.

I do love the faster shutter speed in the GX1 and think that putting a touchscreen on a camera was absolute genius (think of what cellphones were like before touch screens). You might think that a touch screen might seem like a gimmicky feature (I did), but it does allow for quicker menu navigation and moving of the spot focus. The on-screen level feature is another one that seems gimmicky but is pretty cool in actuality. Though adding the 3x3 grid on top of it (to help with the rule of thirds) would clutter the display too much.

While I thought I would miss the quick dial on the GF1 (to quickly change between single shot, burst, exposure burst, and timer) the GX1's on screen menu's make that a breeze. And really, 9 times out of 10 I just want to be in burst mode anyways and not having the dial now means not having to worry about accidental bumps that change the mode without my knowledge.

If you have a GF1, the GX1 is ripe for the picking at todays low prices. It definitely takes getting used to, but it's a great upgrade at a good price). If you were thinking of getting a new DSLR or wanting point & shoot convenience with DSLR quality and manual controls then definitely give the GX1 close consideration.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera Body (Black):

I own an Olympus E-P3 and I wanted to upgrade to a higher res chip. I own four Olympus lenses and they seem to work very well with the GX1. I haven't done any side by side comparisons yet with the two cameras but I am very pleased with the resolution of the GX1. Given the price difference between the two, I can recommend the GX-1 over the older 12 meg resolution Olympus models. One thing I do miss is the higher res and brighter display of the display screen of the E-P3. The GX1 screen is pretty useless in direct sunlight and I am waiting to see if someone unloads the EVF for the GX1 on some used equipment site. The EVF costs almost as much as the camera.

I am very happy with my choice. The camera is lightweight and loaded with control options that let you do just about anything. It also works with my old Nikon lenses with an inexpensive adapter. It allows me to use the light meter and aperture priority automatic mode. Something the lower priced Nikons cannot do. I like being able to customize almost any setting.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera Body (Black):

                    The good:
For the money, you can't really go wrong here. The camera is solid. It just reeks of quality build.

For a small size, even with large hands it's one of the easier cameras to hold. With pancake lens it pockets well.

The Panasonic and Olypmus m4/3 line have a huge selection of lenses.

It focuses fast, has great touch screen controls and has great image quality. It prints well up to around a 2ftx2ft photo (from what I have seen, no personal prints myself).

                    The bad:
No sensor stabilizer- however anything you zoom with that needs it will have lens stabilization which is better than Olympus sensor stabilization (and you can't use both together on those cameras).

Battery life isn't great- but it's what you expect on these small cameras. They can't perform magic on batteries yet lol. So as for all small form factor cameras carry extra batteries.

If you are getting this camera with the standard kit lens, don't bother- it's not that great. Takes decent portraits but is slow (fstop) and not very sharp at all. So buy either a old fast 35mm lens with adapter, or one of the prime lenses- they are amazing!!

The video controls are limited- there is not much in the way of manual controls. But that's not to say the video quality is bad- it's great!

The screen could be sharper, but it's not hard to tell if you got the shot or not.

As a non-professional photographer, it takes me a while to learn to use a new camera. The lens that I wanted for this camera was out of stock when I placed the order, so I am using a "borrowed" lens from another camera. So far, I have had good results; there are enough similarities between the two cameras to make the "learning curve" less difficult.

Great starter camera. Used the GF1 and GX1 together, the GX1 is equally good, but more then half the price, almost worth it to buy 2 if you have the extra lenses.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-GX1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera Body (Black):

If you have a GF1 and are wondering if the is worth the $$ to upgrade, I would say at the original list price no, the GX1 isn't that much better, but for the close out price? Buy it! buy it NOW.

If you have any other M4/3 body the GX1 don't even wonder if it's a good idea, it's great.

The touch screen is a nice improvement and it's the best implimentation that I've seen. The imporved sensor is nice.

I love the GF1, and the GX1 is better!
