The U-Boat Direct Mount Canon 7D from iDC Photo Video is a dedicated video cage for the Canon 7D camera. It delivers a simple, elegant way to shoot HDSLR footage for photojournalists, documentary filmmakers, skiers, snowboarders--anyone looking for a quick, lightweight way to use an HDSLR rig. The baseplate allows immediate access to the battery door for fast battery changes without taking the camera from the video cage.

If you want to use the Canon battery grip with this set-up, optional 7" handles are available. An optional viewfinder is available which attaches directly to the U-Boat baseplate. The viewfinder is only compatible with this product, and the viewfinder may not be used when using the camera's battery grip.

The top Bridge Plate with the Tall Cold Shoe and Handle make low-angle video capture a snap. You can also add the optional adjustable-length iDC U-Boat Shoulder Brace for hand-held work. The arm functions as a pan-handle when the U-Boat cage is mounted to your tripod.

This cage is ideal for attaching accessories to your video-capable DSLR camera and makes a terrific second-camera cage. Mount the U-Boat to a Tripod via any Quick-Release Adapter Plate which accepts industry standard 1/4"-20 mounting options. This video cage quickly disassembles for very compact packing. Made in the USA.

Comments about iDC Photo Video U-Boat Direct Mount Canon 7D:

Solid, light construction with plenty of space to trick out with 3rd party or iDC Photo Video accessories.

Expensive in that you will be surprised at how few pieces arrive and how light they are, but you get what you pay for.

A slight drawback is the top does not leave enough room for the popup flash...but you wouldn't really want to use it unless you're doing a quick still photograph and didn't have an external flash with you.

In retrospect, it may have been nicer to get the roomier, taller version of this rig as the interior in between the rig feels a little cramped for space, especially if you were going to try to put a follow focus and LCD screen on (never mind a shotgun mic or a Roland recorder and additional 125 or 160 LED lighting, etc).

Also, before watching the tutorial video on the website, the construction was actually very confusing...it took me about 45 minutes to figure out as I managed to assemble every possible wrong way.

I also found that removing the screw caps on the bottom (that didn't require screwdrivers etc. to tighten) with screws that were flush with the bottom - so the rig could lay down flat - could not tighten properly and so the rig felt too loose and flimsy to use.

I have used now for several weeks and overall it has served me well, but the bottom line is you should check iDC's other rig options on their website beforehand, before seeing if this particular 'baby rig' is the best option in the long run.
