I have owned several 27"+ high end LCD monitors. I bought this HP monitor for my daughter who needed a larger screen for a college. I looked at various cheaper 27" TN displays and the image quality of these cheaper monitors is horrible. For the money, the HP ZR2740w is an outstanding display. I have 2 Apple 27" Cinema displays with the glossy screen. Side by side the Apple's glossy screen is a tiny bit sharper at the expense of glare in brightly lit rooms. Also, the HP ZR2740W and the Apple 27" Cinema Display use the same IPS LCD panel from LG. The HP uses true WLED backlighting (across the back), Apple uses edge LED backlighting to make the Cinema Display as thin as possible. WLED backlit is typically superior to edge lit displays in terms of uniformity and bleed.Although it lacks OSD controls, the ZR2740W out of the box settings are spot on in terms of color calibration....maybe a touch bright. It does have a anti glare coating, but, IMHO it is not as bad as Dell and some other IPS displays, and at native resolution, text is crisp. I have 2 Apple Cinema displays to compare side by side and there are pros and cons to each. The HP ZR2740w to my door is 30% cheaper than [@], and for general use is an outstanding display.

Not really sure. I had a lot of problems getting this monitor up and running. I chose he DVI-D cable to connect to my 6 month old Gateway FX 6860 computer which contains an AMD Radeon 6750 graphics card. When the computer was booting the Gateway splash screen and then the MS Windows screens appeared, but as Windows continued booting the screen went blank. I then tried the display port cable, and that produced absolutely no video. I called HP and one tech finally suggested checking for an updated graphics card driver. Windows gave me a message that I had the latest driver already installed. A visit to the Gateway support site produced a later driver version than currently installed, but that didn't work. My problem was finally solved by going to the AMD Radeon website and installing their driver. Now that the monitor is working, I'm not so sure I really like it. Colors on the Windows desktop are quite vibrant, but for some reason many application windows seem drab compared to the monitor I'm replacing. I tried adjusting the graphics card settings, but when the colors start looking good, the text starts to look washed out.

Comments about HP ZR2740w 27" LED-Backlit IPS Monitor:

We started using this monitor for it's resolution. It is allowing our developers to see much more data on screen. The pixel count and clarity mean that there is not only more data, it is also easier to read.

The price is very competitive, packaging is up to HP's usual great standard and set up has been easy. For our older machines we installed a very reasonable NVidia graphics card with dual display port capability.

We have made two purchases of 16 and 6 monitors, B&H has been very responsive and everything has arrived on time and exactly as described. We will be continuing to buy.

Comments about HP ZR2740w 27" LED-Backlit IPS Monitor:

I have two of these. First one I bought about 2 years ago from another vendor and had to return it to get one without scuff marks inside the surface cover. Since then the replacement worked fine. Just this April, I ordered one from B&H to use at my second home. It lasted exactly 27 days before it failed. Screen just went black and cannot get the image back. B&H was lighting fast about the RMA, but alas HP HAS TERRIBLE QUALITY CONTROL. No wonder they are slowly going out of business. So unless you are prepared to return one of these, find something else. It's just too bad because the performance is excellent for the price.

Comments about HP ZR2740w 27" LED-Backlit IPS Monitor:

Seeing as this is my first monitor over 21", my first monitor over 1920x1080 resolution and my first professional monitor for editing photography - I love this thing. I did have to use the included cable - I didn't know that at first. They talk about it only having brightness to adjust it - but to me, it looks great! Since I have dual monitors, anything I put this next to looks dull, dim, and terrible. This monitor is awesome.

Comments about HP ZR2740w 27" LED-Backlit IPS Monitor:

I was unable to get this to work with my MacBookPro late 2013 15" retina. I wanted to have an external monitor that would do 2560x1440 and this seemed like a good deal. I could not get it to display anything more than 1280x720. I bought every cable possible and adapters for the Mac and visited dozens of forums to figure this out. Even took it in to Apple Genius Bar and no one was able to get it to work. The MacBookPro did get tested with other monitors and it worked fine at the 2560x1440 resolution. These two just don't seem to be compatible. I had to return the monitor. Sad!

Huge improvement over 1920 x 1080 27" monitor. 77% more pixels! I'm amazed how awesome this monitor is, even without OSD features built-in. This monitor is compatible with HP Display Assistant Utility 2.11 Rev. A (11 Apr 2014). Make sure you download this if you want to adjust brightness from desktop, change orientation, change inputs, etc. Very useful to have.

I use this 27" monitor for photo work with Lightroom and Photoshop. At 2560 x 1440 resolution it provides the detail to see what I am adjusting and the results perfectly and gives plenty of room to see the surrounding areas to what I am adjusting.

I bought this monitor to be used with my 27"Imac. It has the same max resolution and although the image is not as bright as the Imac (I doubt any display would match that), it is extremelly clear. It was a very good value for the money.

The ZR2740w is an awesome devise for photographic editing. Being able to see images at the size I will print is a huge plus. I love the interaction with my Mac, though I do not understand why a proper cord is not included to hook to MacBook Pro mini port. A minor point in the big picture. Once obtained the results were worth the wait and the savings over the Mac 27" screen are significant with little difference in quality.

Comments about HP ZR2740w 27" LED-Backlit IPS Monitor:

I bought this for a computer that's used for both web development and occasional gaming. It replaced a HP ZR24w (similar to this, but only 24" and 1080p).

                                - For web development, the size and resolution are awesome - you don't need two screens because you can have the code and the website side-by-side at the same time. Colors, detail, and brightness are all fantastic.

                                - For gaming, you need a beefy graphics card (I have an R9 280X), but the immersiveness is amazing. I haven't noticed any ghosting or other artifacts.

I also love the adjustability of the stand - I use a standing desk, and it's nice to be able to just raise the monitor up by it's stand instead of needing to pile books and whatnot to get it to the proper height.

The only issue I had was that I tried to use my old DVI cable initially instead of the one that came with it and the screen looked really glitchy. It turns out I had a single-link cable from my old (lower resolution) display. I switched it for the dual-link cable in the box and everything worked swimmingly.

The only other thing I could ask for is perhaps a mini DisplayPort to full-size DisplayPort adapter since I have 4 devices with mini-DP, but nothing with full-size DP outputs.

Sure it doesn't have ODS but it doesn't matter because HP has the optimal settings.
You can always get a Color calibrator and calibrate the monitor.

Gaming is great, I don't notice any ghosting as some people claim.

This monitor was a HUGE step up from my old Acer 22" LCD. The IPS high res display is amazing and the color accuracy is superb. The one complaint I have is that the first one I got had a clump of dead pixels. Sent it back and now all is good.

Comments about HP ZR2740w 27" LED-Backlit IPS Monitor:

I bought this monitor for photo editing and general computing use. I use a Canon 5D Mark III, all the latest f/2.8 glass, and a couple high end image processing programs (In other words, I'm fairly picky when it comes to image quality). With regard to image quality I think this monitor is awesome (awesome enough to prevent me from springing for an NEC that would have been slightly better).

Having established that I think this is a great monitor, I noticed a lot of information about it floating on the net. Hopefully my points below will consolidate this info for other interested buyers.

                                        (1) This monitor lacks detailed adjustment controls that permit a true "calibration" from being accomplished (only brightness can be adjusted with buttons on the monitor). This seemed to be a deal breaker for some, but I managed just fine (see #4 below).

                                        (2) This monitor does not have a large number of inputs (and has no HDMI input). This is also a non-issue for me due to the fact that my computer is my only input source and the fact that (as noted below) achieving maximum resolution can't be achieved with an HDMI cable.

                                        (3) To get the maximum performance out of this monitor, you'll need to use a "Dual Link DVI" (which is actually a single cable that comes in the box with the monitor) -OR- a "DisplayPort" cable. Additionally, you'll need a video card with ample resolution. I'd imagine this is not a problem for most people if my low end 2+ year old card can manage.
I am not an expert on this topic, but I do not believe that an HDMI or VGA cable has the ability to achieve 2560x1440 with this monitor (or any monitor under current specs/standards?).
Think of this connection/cable as a pipe that has to let pixels flow through it. If you aren't using a Dual Link DVI or DisplayPort cable your "pipe" isn't wide enough to let the pixels flow.
If you've put a 6 inch DisplayPort adapter (big pipe) at the end of a 4 foot HDMI cable running from your computer to your monitor (small pipe), you still can't flow enough pixels to achieve maximum resolution.
Having rambled a bit above, this monitor comes with a Dual Link DVI cable and most video cards have such a connection. Ensure that your video card has a Dual Link DVI and/or DisplayPort connection and I am sure that 99%+ of users will have no problems running this monitor at full throttle.

                                        (3) I saw some internet chatter about hardware compatibility issues with this monitor. I believe the most recent such post I found was ~2 years old, so it seems that any driver issues have since been fixed. If you see other talk of "compatibility issues" with this monitor it is likely referring to an inability to achieve maximum resolution (probably due to use of a technically inferior HDMI or VGA cable) and is likely not due to an inability of this monitor and a video card to recognize each other.

                                        (4) Despite the drawback that might be assumed with #1 above, my fairly low end ATI video card lets me make adjustments in the "Catalyst Control Center" software (residing in my system tray).
Although I have no doubts that adjustment via monitor hardware is better, I seem to have gotten a monitor that was nearly perfect right out of the box. With one exception (sharpness slightly high), I was never more than 1 "adjustment increment" from hitting the goal of all the different test/calibration images I used to tweak my monitor.
Because all calibrations are dependent upon room/ambient conditions I thought this was a good result. I actually left my sharpness a tick high because it wasn't a bother when editing photos and made reading text nicer.

                                        (5) There was a production change about 2 years ago that changed the anti glare coating on this monitor (for what the internet is worth this was confirmed by HP). The current/latest coating is less obvious than the original treatment (with a positive effect on monitor image quality). Some people call this a ZR2740W "V2" (though the "V2" is not acknowledged by a revised model number). Any new version of this monitor that you buy will be a "V2" at this time. I don't know about refurbs.

                                        (6) I saw a number of infant mortality issues that saw these monitors dying on people's desktops early on. When I decided to finally pull the trigger on this model I took some comfort in the fact that I hadn't seen an infant mortality issue in the ~6mo before I ordered mine (so maybe something was improved in production). Addiitonally, the warranty that comes with this monitor is great - I believe it's a 3 year "commercial warranty" with in home support. Some of those who had their monitors die said that an HP tech walked into their house, setup a new replacement monitor, and walked away with the old one!

I'd highly recommend this monitor for anyone shopping under a grand. If you won't bat an eye at spending a grand or two I am sure that an NEC (or some other brand is better). I'd give 4.5 stars if it were an option, but 4 would be too low.

I decided to try this HP monitor for photo editing and am very satisfied with the image quality...very sharp and bright with vivid colors. It's connected to a 2010 17" MacBook Pro via a 6' StarTech Mini DisplayPort Male to DisplayPort Male Adapter Cable with full resolution as a second display. A really handy feature of this monitor is dual inputs...one display port and one DVI...and you can switch between the two using a front panel button. This saves the cost of having to use a KVM switch to hookup two machines. The DVI is connected to my Linux server with the included cable at full resolution. The monitor stand has a better range than most for verical and horizontal adjustments.

This is a wonderful screen for anyone that needs a high quality screen for post production, especially entry level or semi-pro colorists. This screen matches well to the Blackmagic 2.5 Raw files that I use for my independent productions. Even merely for viewing a film this is a far superior experience to big screen TV's of the same price or monitors at 1080 with 16.7 million colors compared to the over 1 billion colors(10bit) that this screen has. A definite must for any cinematographer wanting to review their footage at a high level of visual quality.

I had been frustrated with my laptop screen (lack of saturation and contrast) and to some extents my old secondary monitor (persistently, slightly green hue). As a photographer, colors are important and the HP colors are great. There aren't fine controls on the monitor, but they can be adjusted easily with the video card. I have already noticed much better colors on both my web publishing and printed images. The large screen size and resolution makes editing images a breeze, as there is much more space to work with. My only caveats are that occasionally the monitor doesn't wake from sleep and must be turned off and on (not a big deal), and that if the DisplayPort (DP) on your computer is a mini DP then you need to get your own cable, as it ships with only a DP cable and a DVI cable.

Comments about HP ZR2740w 27" LED-Backlit IPS Monitor:

I bought two (2) of these monitors right here at BH.
I have a digital photography business and recently decided to upgrade my monitors. Bought two of these monitors to put alongside a 27in iMac. The resolution ( 2560 x 1440 ) matches exactly the apple computer. So with one on each side of the mac I have three times the real estate at exactly the same resolution and size. I can drag any photo across not one but three monitors seamlessly. I can also when editing use the side monitors for close ups and/or to compare to originals. The old monitors I had were different sizes and resolutions so things were not as smooth.

Physically compared to the iMac they are physically the same (think black frame minus the aluminum apple plate on bottom). Since the stand is adjustable (much more so than the mac) you can match height easily. They are thicker than the new iMacs (about the thickness of the older iMacs) but it's irrelevant either way since the thickness is not seen anyway. The best part? You can rotate the monitors almost 360 degrees. Rotate one at 90 degrees (display is now vertical) and your websites now go on for ever but more importantly, you can edit and display portrait oriented photos better than you did before. Viewable much larger.

I just got them - plugged and play - no need to load CD disc yet.
They come with a free DVI cable which I could had used with existing DVI to mini-display adapters but instead I ordered two mini display (Thunderbolt) to fullsize display port cables (also here at BH). Work like a charm.

The stand (very easy to attach it) goes very low to the desk and very high... high enough to allow the monitor to rotate around the axis like a propeller on a plane.

Since it has multiple inputs, I'm going to use the DVIs to double-duty the monitors by hooking them up to my older generation Mac pro (server size). Toggling the source button you go from computer to computer instantly.

I also got a color calibration spyder to calibrate it to my ICC profile professional printer- but I haven't used it yet
I will update this review or add a new one when more time goes by.

The monitors come very well packed and have a THREE (3) year AT HOME warranty from HP.

This is solidly built - no cheap materials. Hefty, but for the size, not heavy.
