The Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with GH-100 Pistol-Grip Ball Head offers generous height, impressive stability, and light weight alongside a comprehensive list of professional functions – primary among which is the 180° tilting of the center column, which makes a convenient task of macro photography.

The included ball head operates by way of a pistol-grip trigger. Squeeze it, and you release the lock on the ball in order to position it; release it, and the ball locks to set the position. This enables extremely fast setups and one-handed operation. With the GH-100 head on the tilting center column, you'll be able to position your camera easily & securely at virtually any point within a spherical range. With an Allen key you can adjust the tension of the center column's swiveling motion, and the head also features a Friction Control System.

Not only macro photography but also any type of outdoor photography will be well-served by the Alta Pro 263AGH, which reaches a maximum height of 68.5" and supports up to 15.4 lb. The tripod features spikes that emerge from its rubber feet.

The included GH-100 is removable and features a side-to-side tilt of -32° to +90° and -8° to +90° of back-to-front tilt. The head, which comes with a QS-65GH quick-release plate, also pans a full 360° with a click stop every 5° to aid in panoramic photography. The tripod collar features set screws, so with an Allen wrench you can establish an extremely strong connection with the head.

Multi-Angle Central Column (MACC) System allows you to move the center column from 0 to 180° angles in variable vertical and horizontal positions
Instant Swivel Stop-n-Lock (ISSL) system securely repositions the center column in one simple movement, in just a few seconds, while maintaining the tripod's stability
Rubber ring underneath tripod collar absorbs shock if center column descends rapidly to chassis
Bubble level on die-cast magnesium chassis
Aluminum alloy legs can be set independently at three angles (25°, 50°, and 80°), for stable operation on uneven ground and for low-angle photography
Quick-flip leg locks
Large foam grips on all three legs for all-weather use
Hexagonal center column prevents twisting
Pistol grip provides one-handed operation of head controls
Friction Control System allows you to modify the level of friction on the ball to accommodate changing equipment weight
Anodized center ball allows for extremely fluid movement without sacrificing precise control

I had read on other reviews of this product before I purchased it and some said that the ball head would not stay where they put it and that it would slowly creep down with a larger millimeter lens on it. Well I put this to the test and set up the tripod and put my Nikon D5100 on it with my 70-300mm lens completely zoomed out. I tightened the back of the pistol grip down to secure it without over tightening. Then I focused in on a bird house at 300mm and took a picture every 15 minutes for one hour and compared the pictures. There was NO movement at all, absolutely NO creeping what so ever!! I guess the people that had issues with this amazing set up, could not figure out how to tighten the grip down. I love everything about this tripod and pistol grip! I've used it for my stock photos, and for setting up my off camera flash. I love using this for my off camera flash because of how high you can put the flash. Being able to set up my camera using, what I call the "camera boom arm" feature, has also made things interesting for portraits and my stock photos. This is definitely one of the best tripod combo set ups out there on the market. Thanks so much for making an amazing product that is reasonably priced!!

I had this delivered on 3/5/13, its appearence was solid, but it quickly revealed itself to be quite unsatisfactory.

The pistol grip head is a great idea, one that could impart much needed efficiency, unfortunately this head is a complete fail! Due to its shoddy construction, the head is either to tight, or not tight enough, either way the head will continue to move, either jerky & sticky, or to loosely. Consider, to achieve a smooth, fluid motion in any direction, the rear tightening lock must be almost completey loosened! This renders the pistol grip itself moot, thats because its so loose that you no longer need to depress the trigger mechanism, the head, and your "expensive gear will move all by themselves, tighten it down to a reasonable level and its movements become extremely "sticky!" Further, the head must be locked down at all times if you have the head(and your gear)canted in one direction or the other, if its loosened just enough to operate the pistol grip, the gravity behind your "very expensive" equipment will force it to release if not held firmly by yourself in place, and it will very definitely slam at the end of its arc! The whole idea of the pistol grip is to eliminate the need for such extraneous monitoring, if its unable to perform without constant supervision, then whats the point? It imparts a strong impression of not being trustworthy!

That brings up another serious flaw in the mechanism, the ball head itself when properly snugged up, is to tight, and the movements are jerky, sticky, and forced. Mark my words, this will not break in over time, the parts are plastic v metal alloy, the end result will always be the same, the polymer will wear, and it will wear very quickly. I hope that whomever lands on this review is paying attention, I didn't get a bad sample(ball head), this is how the head was designed, its a manufacturing & design flaw!

What was defective on my sample, and the reason for its return for full refund, were the telescopic legs. My unit seemed okay out of the box, a cursory inspection left me thinking at least the tripod itself was fairly solid, wrong! I attached an Eos 7D, EF300f/4L IS, and EF1.4x TC to the head and mounted them to the tripod. I had extended the legs to their full length, the forward leg, where my kit was directed, collapsed, not instantly, rather over the course of about 10-15 seconds. The clamping lock was revealed to be defective, when locked down with legs fully deployed, the lock had just enough tension to hold its load, but only just briefly. Once the leg began to slip(about an 1/8th of an inch)it quickly failed entirely. I was fortunate I was next to it when it failed. The whole head and tripod are rated at 15.4 lbs(actually the head is only rated at 13.2 lbs)while my entire camera and lenses came in well under that(6 lbs)the device still failed, right from the box!

I purchased this device based on the glowing reviews I saw here, but my first hand observations, and the failure of the mechanism at two serious points has left me convinced that most of those reviews are from very easily satisfied individuals, individuals that would not be likely to be to mechanically inclined, and almost certainly would not be using this thing more then a few times...

Trust me, this Vanguard combo is a very poor design, serious pro's will see its failings right from the box...

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with GH-100 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

Being a hobbyist photographer for several years I have gone through about 6 inexpensive plastic tripods that were either slow to set up, difficult to aim with pan/tilt knobs, or lacked stability from weak locking legs. I've read several articles to invest in a good dependable tripod and took a chance on the Vanguard Alta Pro 263 with GH-100 pistol grip ball head. I am very happy with this set as it has none of the shortcomings of my previous tripods. The GH-100 is smooth and strong and will hold my Nikon D800 body with 70-200mm lens in any position I require. The legs lock securely and are rock solid. I have taken several low level shots utilizing the 80 degree leg rotation that give my photographs a fresh new perspective. The 6 lb weight does make it somewhat cumbersome but the included carry bag helps significantly. I highly recommend this tripod for its quality and value. It has re-energized my passion for photography.

I normally am a photographer but my friends have used it for their old bulky heavy video cameras and they want to buy one! The carbon fiber version is my next tripod purchase.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with GH-100 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

After purchasing a new camera body and long zoom lens I was reluctant to attach such expensive equipment to a relatively inexpensive tripod. Because I want to photograph flowers, birds and other nature subjects in addition to macro photography I started to look at some of the videos on YouTube relative to my interests.
I happened upon video with the nature photographer who was using and demonstrated Vanguard ALTA Pro 263AGH aluminum tripod and GH-100 Pistol grip ball head. I was very interested in this product it seems to be well designed and well made but the proof was when I received it.
One item at a time, first the tripod. I have two tripods already, and this piece of equipment is so much more than just a tripod. The legs can be made shorter or longer which is normal, but each can spread further than the standard 25 degrees to allow the head of the tripod to be just inches off the ground. The center column not only goes up and down as one would expect but can be moved so the camera can actually be cantilevered over the subject. These features allow me to get the camera into positions with the stability of a tripod that I was never able to do before.
Now the pistol grip and ball head. Again, well designed and manufactured. Using the pistol grip allows a very fluid motion to pan the camera on the subject very easily and smoothly. Adjust the grip so a light touch from your hand use the camera right left upper down very, very easily.
As you may have noticed, I am very excited about this combination of tripod and pistol grip ball head. I have already shown it my photographer friends. My highest recommendation.

You would be hard pressed to find a tripod that is as stable and designed to provide vertical/horizontal positioning for the money. The tripod has cam locks for the legs which for me is a must have feature. Threaded locks are slow/tedious in my opinion.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with GH-100 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

I've been eyeing the AltaPro 263 leg for a while. I'm also a big fan of pistol grip because it allows me to adjust my camera really quickly. I was reluctant to buy both separately because they were a bit over my budget. When B&H listed them as a combo, I couldn't resist anymore. The leg is super sturdy. I tried them to take a good picture of the moon with Olympus OM-D E-M5 with Panasonic 100-300mm with digital teleconverter turned on (so it's an equivalent of 1200mm on 35mm camera) and I have no problem manual focusing. I tested it to do some long exposure shots and they are all tack sharp. The build quality is the best for the price. My only issue is the pistol grip is a little bit stiff. I'm not sure it just because it's new of it's supposed to be that stiff. My right hand is quite strong, so I can deal with it. I just wished it was a bit softer.

Excellent performance, a bit heavy and impractical to take but as for very good stability. The gun is very hard and hope that only requires management to make it more friendly

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with GH-100 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

I was looking for a new tripod that was sturdy, had a pistol grip head, and had a tilting center column for work with flowers and low lying things. This tripod does everything they say it will. Operation was very straight forward. My one concern was whether it would hold my camera with the 100-500 Sigma zoom lens. It did it with no problem. The pistol grip allows me to move the camera to any position, release the trigger, and it holds it right there. No play in the head after stopping like my old one had. Very pleased, especially with this price. I has met all of my expectations. That doesn't happen very often.
