The Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with GH-100 Pistol-Grip Ball Head offers generous height, impressive stability, and light weight alongside a comprehensive list of professional functions – primary among which is the 180° tilting of the center column, which makes a convenient task of macro photography.

The included ball head operates by way of a pistol-grip trigger. Squeeze it, and you release the lock on the ball in order to position it; release it, and the ball locks to set the position. This enables extremely fast setups and one-handed operation. With the GH-100 head on the tilting center column, you'll be able to position your camera easily & securely at virtually any point within a spherical range. With an Allen key you can adjust the tension of the center column's swiveling motion, and the head also features a Friction Control System.

Not only macro photography but also any type of outdoor photography will be well-served by the Alta Pro 263AGH, which reaches a maximum height of 68.5" and supports up to 15.4 lb. The tripod features spikes that emerge from its rubber feet.

The included GH-100 is removable and features a side-to-side tilt of -32° to +90° and -8° to +90° of back-to-front tilt. The head, which comes with a QS-65GH quick-release plate, also pans a full 360° with a click stop every 5° to aid in panoramic photography. The tripod collar features set screws, so with an Allen wrench you can establish an extremely strong connection with the head.

Multi-Angle Central Column (MACC) System allows you to move the center column from 0 to 180° angles in variable vertical and horizontal positions
Instant Swivel Stop-n-Lock (ISSL) system securely repositions the center column in one simple movement, in just a few seconds, while maintaining the tripod's stability
Rubber ring underneath tripod collar absorbs shock if center column descends rapidly to chassis
Bubble level on die-cast magnesium chassis
Aluminum alloy legs can be set independently at three angles (25°, 50°, and 80°), for stable operation on uneven ground and for low-angle photography
Quick-flip leg locks
Large foam grips on all three legs for all-weather use
Hexagonal center column prevents twisting
Pistol grip provides one-handed operation of head controls
Friction Control System allows you to modify the level of friction on the ball to accommodate changing equipment weight
Anodized center ball allows for extremely fluid movement without sacrificing precise control
Dual-locking quick shoe mechanism
Rubberized hand grip

I had read on other reviews of this product before I purchased it and some said that the ball head would not stay where they put it and that it would slowly creep down with a larger millimeter lens on it. Well I put this to the test and set up the tripod and put my Nikon D5100 on it with my 70-300mm lens completely zoomed out. I tightened the back of the pistol grip down to secure it without over tightening. Then I focused in on a bird house at 300mm and took a picture every 15 minutes for one hour and compared the pictures. There was NO movement at all, absolutely NO creeping what so ever!! I guess the people that had issues with this amazing set up, could not figure out how to tighten the grip down. I love everything about this tripod and pistol grip! I've used it for my stock photos, and for setting up my off camera flash. I love using this for my off camera flash because of how high you can put the flash. Being able to set up my camera using, what I call the "camera boom arm" feature, has also made things interesting for portraits and my stock photos. This is definitely one of the best tripod combo set ups out there on the market. Thanks so much for making an amazing product that is reasonably priced!!

I had this delivered on 3/5/13, its appearence was solid, but it quickly revealed itself to be quite unsatisfactory.

The pistol grip head is a great idea, one that could impart much needed efficiency, unfortunately this head is a complete fail! Due to its shoddy construction, the head is either to tight, or not tight enough, either way the head will continue to move, either jerky & sticky, or to loosely. Consider, to achieve a smooth, fluid motion in any direction, the rear tightening lock must be almost completey loosened! This renders the pistol grip itself moot, thats because its so loose that you no longer need to depress the trigger mechanism, the head, and your "expensive gear will move all by themselves, tighten it down to a reasonable level and its movements become extremely "sticky!" Further, the head must be locked down at all times if you have the head(and your gear)canted in one direction or the other, if its loosened just enough to operate the pistol grip, the gravity behind your "very expensive" equipment will force it to release if not held firmly by yourself in place, and it will very definitely slam at the end of its arc! The whole idea of the pistol grip is to eliminate the need for such extraneous monitoring, if its unable to perform without constant supervision, then whats the point? It imparts a strong impression of not being trustworthy!

That brings up another serious flaw in the mechanism, the ball head itself when properly snugged up, is to tight, and the movements are jerky, sticky, and forced. Mark my words, this will not break in over time, the parts are plastic v metal alloy, the end result will always be the same, the polymer will wear, and it will wear very quickly. I hope that whomever lands on this review is paying attention, I didn't get a bad sample(ball head), this is how the head was designed, its a manufacturing & design flaw!

What was defective on my sample, and the reason for its return for full refund, were the telescopic legs. My unit seemed okay out of the box, a cursory inspection left me thinking at least the tripod itself was fairly solid, wrong! I attached an Eos 7D, EF300f/4L IS, and EF1.4x TC to the head and mounted them to the tripod. I had extended the legs to their full length, the forward leg, where my kit was directed, collapsed, not instantly, rather over the course of about 10-15 seconds. The clamping lock was revealed to be defective, when locked down with legs fully deployed, the lock had just enough tension to hold its load, but only just briefly. Once the leg began to slip(about an 1/8th of an inch)it quickly failed entirely. I was fortunate I was next to it when it failed. The whole head and tripod are rated at 15.4 lbs(actually the head is only rated at 13.2 lbs)while my entire camera and lenses came in well under that(6 lbs)the device still failed, right from the box!

I purchased this device based on the glowing reviews I saw here, but my first hand observations, and the failure of the mechanism at two serious points has left me convinced that most of those reviews are from very easily satisfied individuals, individuals that would not be likely to be to mechanically inclined, and almost certainly would not be using this thing more then a few times...

Trust me, this Vanguard combo is a very poor design, serious pro's will see its failings right from the box...

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with GH-100 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

PROS: Compact, sturdy and looks very durable. The center column is very versatile and helpful, especially if you look macro or from unusual angles.

CONS: The handle of the gun is a little hard to press and the tripod is heavier than I expected.

BOTTOM LINE: I am happy with my purchase and really recommend the product to someone looking for a versatile and sturdy tripod. If the most important thing for you is to have a lightweight tripod, buy something else.

I bought this for my dad to use with a spotting scope after he used one someone had at a gun match. He loves it! It is very easy to set up and with the pistol grip it is very easy to move from target to target. Plus it is just very cool. He was thrilled to get it and after using it, he had no complaints.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with GH-100 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

First off, packing and shipping were first rate.

There are many reviews on this item, but almost all were from professionals. I am writing this is a novice with very little experience with tripod photography in the past.

First thing I noticed was build quality and feel. Assembly was nominal and I mounted my GH4 in short order.

After basic setup using the legs, I got right to using the pistol-grip controller.

        Photography:
Setting your camera position to take photographs is painless with this ball head. A quick grip and its just point then release. The adjustment stayed where I wanted it very solid. I was in moderate winds (7 to 12) and taking a time lapse, and the tripod stayed 98% movement free. Even extending the center neck to elevate the camera provided a stable platform. While of course there are limits to stability, in any indoor condition and moderate to ideal outside conditions, you should have no problem with photos. There is a weight clip on the bottom to provide even more stability though weight.

The legs on this unit are very versatile and I suggest you search the manufactures instructional videos for further information.

Cons for photography: Cant really think of one.

        Video:
The only gripe I had with trying to use this for video as smooth fluid movement. The pistol grip is great for positioning, but kind of awkward when attempting to pan through a multi degree shot. I played around with the tension settings and Im sure I dont have the muscle coordination required yet, but those fluid heads with the extended handles look far more suited to moving video work.

The quick release mounting plate *mostly* snapped into place but sometimes I need to help the locking level into its final position.

Overall, once I get my rebate, this seems like a high value tripod that will suite me fine. I do time lapse photography and basic nature scenic 4K video and slow motion.

Caution: Your Camera May Fall Off this Tripod!

        About Me Photo Enthusiast

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with GH-100 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

The design of the locking mechanism of the quick release disk that mounts on the camera to the tripod is faulty. It makes a click sound fooling you into believing it has locked the disk into place. It will not be locked causing the camera to fall to the ground and possibly damage the camera.
Sunpak and other manufactures have better locking mechanism designs.
This is the First time in over Forty years of using tripods that I had a camera fall to the ground.

I own the Vanguard Alta Pro 263 AT with GH-100 head. In the course of a week I had to use the tool it came with to tighten the clamps three times because the leg would all of a sudden start retracting. Sadly, when its last retraction occurred while I was contemplating a waterfall in Yellowstone the tripd decided to retract on me and I was not able to catch the camera on time. My Nikon D750 attached with the Nikkor 24-70 F2.8 fell upside down causing damage to the camera settings dial and focus ring on the lens, the hood completely broke off. Although the tripod is rated for 15lbs, it failed. Luckily I had insurance and currently waiting for my camera to return from repairs. I first became aware of this tripod through a video post by Jared Polin. From first impressions, the tripod is good and when you firmly press down it appears to be a stable tripod. However, for extended use, it failed on me. I have purchased another tripod since rated for 40lbs. I would not recommend this lens for pro gear.

After years of searching for a stable tripod with lots of features at a decent price, finally I purchased the Alta Pro 263AGH. This is the answer to my requirements for both birding and macro imaging. The combination of multi-angle column & 3-angle legs allows me to shoot from just about any angle and height I can handle. The pistol-grip ball head supports my 8 pound camera/lens combo with absolute support and rigidity. The adjustable friction control lets me set whatever friction level is needed without concerns about slippage. The quick-release plate is the most reliable one I've ever used. With all of the features I want incorporated into one sturdy tripod, I have no problem with the slightly increased weight. This one is a definite keeper.

The pistol grip head is amazing. I will never use anything else. Everyone who tries it oohs and aahs.
The engineering and build on this are excellent.

It is rock solid and smooth. The trigger also works great for camera shutter use.

I researched and have used many tripods. You will not regret getting this one.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with GH-100 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

I use this for exploring and landscape work, but it's also great in the studio. I needed a tripod that could handle a D800 with battery grip and considerable glass weight that would enable me to make quick/precise adjustments. I went through a number of tripods that were subpar/ not sturdy or flexible enough before borrowing this one from a photographer friend. After a weekend's use I was sold on it and purchased one of my own.

The flip locks and pistol grip with large ball head are absolutely key in making quick adjustments with a large, bulky camera. The pistol grip is a huge selling point and I'm not sure I would buy another tripod without one. Having the ability to make minute adjustments without fiddling with dials and twisting threads is fantastic. The pistol grip locks in the camera position with zero drifting in portrait set up (I found many tripods had issues with drifting and camera weight, even though they claimed to support even heavier cameras then mine). The description says "impressive stability" and that is spot on.

The only downside to this tripod is its size. It's probably not the best travel tripod, or even ideal for field work given it's bulk. But for me, I have no problem trading that for a tripod that is totally reliable, functional, and absolutely solid with the heft of my gear. On the flip side the larger scale of this tripod allows for more height, more so than a typical tripod. It's a nice bonus. The weight is reasonable for its size.

If compactness is something you absolutely need, look elsewhere (although you'll be hard pressed to find a stable enough compact tripod for a similar set up). If you have a smaller camera/ lens configuration this is more than you need. If you need a tripod that is rock solid for heftier equipment, easy to adjust, and are less concerned with size, I would absolutely recommend this tripod.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with GH-100 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

It's reasonably light and comes with a carrying bag (but not travel tripod light). Also, extremely versatile with the adjustable neck and pistol grip. I was worried the legs would be stiff to adjust, but they're a breeze. I use it for reference photography for illustrations, landscape/ night photography, and general use so far. You're getting a lot for your money here, and the DSLR backpack rebate they offered when I bought it made it a steal. (still waiting for it to arrive, so I can review it as well) If you primarily do video, I recommend the pan head kit they offer. No cons as of yet.

Comments about Vanguard Alta Pro 263AGH 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with GH-100 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

The tripod is excellent quality. This version comes with a pistol grip, but you can get several other heads. There's many great features, and it's fast to set up. Comes with a nice carrying bag. Fairly lightweight and stable (can buy a stone bag separate if desired), but it's not feather light like a travel tripod. The DSLR backpack rebate makes this already great value a steal at sub $[$]. I do illustration and photography, so I needed a solid tripod for model reference, landscape/night photography, and general use. If you mainly do video, I recommend the pan head kit rather than the pistol grip.

I absolutely love this tripod. I like to do time lapses and composites and the ability to have my camera almost touching the ground is amazing. The tripod not only performs amazing it feels amazing. It's not too heavy but feels like it's solid steel. Definitely happy with my purchase!

This tripod is great for any creative photo project or everyday shooting. Grip and ball head are very seamless and drops in very quickly. A bit heavy, but it adds to the stability. Overall a great product.
