The Nikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens is a wide-angle lens that is compatible with both full-frame (FX) and DX-format cameras. The wide-angle perspective gives you a 94° (70° in DX) angle of view, making it ideal for use with interior subjects as well as broad outdoor subjects. The fast f/2.8 maximum aperture makes it suitable for low-light photography as well as control over your focal plane for use with shallow depth of field and selective focus applications.
The Close Range Correction (CRC) system enables sharper, more detailed image quality when focusing on subjects as close as 9.8" / 25cm. The Super Integrated Coating (SIC) is a multi-layer coating on the lens elements that helps to provide a reduction in lens flare and ghosting while improving overall contrast and image quality.
This lens' autofocus function is compatible with Nikon DSLRs featuring a built-in autofocus motor. It will not support auto focusing when used with certain DSLRs that do not have an integrated focus motor, such as the D5100, D5000, D3200, D3100, D3000, D60, D40, and D40x.

It was fast enough to get a crisp shot of sunset handheld. It also was able to keep focus on my speedy granddaughter in continuous mode in low light. I shot with my Nikon D700. The distortion is corrected in LR3 with one click, but sometimes I leave it because I like the effect. Overall I am very happy with it. It is small and light. I can see it being a staple in my bag.

I had a Sigma 15 to 30mm 3.5 which was a big, heavy lens that always got “Wow, look at that lens” type of responses. Not the type of attention I wanted walking in the park or while doing cityscape work at night.
Safety concerns aside there really are a number of other advantages to short, lightweight lens when you're running around festivals and events all day and night.
After much research on the 20mm 2.8 lens the finale outcome seemed mixed to me with most of the reviews leaning towards the “nice but buy something else”. I got one anyway for 3 main reasons:
1)I wanted small and lightweight – equal to or faster than 2.8 lens.
2)I needed an ultra wide 20mm ( somewhat wide 30mm on my camera)
3)I wanted to stay well below $1000 since I no longer work for a studio and I do this for fun and the occasional computer graphic work.
Here's what I've found about this lens on my D300:
There is a little light fall off at 2.8 but not enough to mean anything to me.
It does seem to be a little soft but in looking at the images I'm noticing some back focusing.
At 2.8 the center of the image is the best as the more you move to the edge the softer you'll get.
I got better than I thought hand held shots at 2.8 and 1/30 to 1/60.
When the camera is held level barrel distortion is not as noticeable as I was lead to believe although it is there. If you plan on using this for professional interior/architectural work you will need some software to help remove what little bowing is there IMO.
All in all I think it is a very good lens for the money when you look at what you get which is a small, well made, fast, bright lens, with very good color and contrast.
If you can live with or I should say learn to work with the “quirky” parts, it's a good lens.
It's not a professional lens but I'm not sure it was ever made to be a digital pro lens.

This lens is a great wide angle besides lightweight and sharp. The bokeh is not very good, but as yet there is no nikon 20mm f/1.4 this serves me well. The focus on D700 is not very fast, but on D4 is much better! Now i'm able to keep my 24-70mm at home and only use the 20mm, 35mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 to cover weddings.

The apeture gets stuck at f2.8 and the repair is expensive. Looking for ways to fix it, I found lots of others out there on the net who had the same problem with this lens. The lens is too expensive for it to be so prone to becoming a dud.

Sharp and wide, a great mate for my D600. If you are tired of carrying around a heavy zoom and are willing to walk up to your subject instead of zooming in from afar, this lens is for you. You can feel your subject up close. Wonderful perspective. This is a fabulous everyday standard lens.

I use this lens for close up landscape, and walk around in the city on my D700 and D90 cameras. No vignetting to speak of, the lens is crisp and fast. Best bang for the buck I think I have found in a lens yet, except perhaps for the 85 mm fixed. I have just never had a problem with it. If you are thinking about going to the edge of wide angle, before it gets weird by heading into the fisheye range, don't hesitate. I have had the lens now for a year, and only wish I had bought it sooner. If I only had one lens to buy, and it had to be for urban shooting, this would be it. Good luck.

I havent been able to put this lens through heavy use yet, but so far it has been working great. I have done some night time photography with it and have been very pleased with the results. the coverage on this lens is right up my alley.. before I got this lens my widest angle lens was a 28mm f2.8D and on my D300s it served as more of a "normal" lens, and not that spectacular for landscape shots (while on my F5 it was a little better). now this lens on my D300s acts more as the 28mm on my F5, which is great! and on my F5 this lens if the perfect angle for the landscape shots im looking for. The AF is a little noisy, but it really doesn't bother me since when im doing landscapes, I usually manually focus. This lens is also built very solidly, right out of the box it felt very well made (it felt nicer than the 28mm). I am only giving it 4 out of 5 since I havent put the lens through heavier use.

Just back from amazingly beautiful and friendly Scotland. This lens was a great companion along with the 300s; when coming upon a great cathedral or castle ruin, however, I sometimes wished I could go wider. This would mean the Fisheye 16mm? If I understand correctly on the 300s this would be a 24mm as opposed to a 30mm "super wide."
That said, there's a significant jump in cost to go wider. The Super Wide 20mm may be the best and most economical compromise.
Enjoy, Cheers.

This lens is a great alternative to many of the $1000 + wide angle lenses. The focus can be a bit soft around the edges, nothing that a little post production work can't take care of. I use this mostly for architectural photography and it works great in low light as well as outdoors.

Probably not too bad a lens on lower resolution sensors but its age shows at D800 resolutions. Soft a bit off axis at 5.6, a little better at 8, but edge and corners are pretty soft compared to the Zeiss wides. If you like the look fine but otherwise it just has too much fall-off and CA for my taste.
