My wife and I have been using this NAS by WD for nearly two weeks now and everything is working well. It is a great way of combining all of our files in one place with access from our Android phones and internet connections at work. It has been a challange going through the files now that they are all in one place due to multiples of many files in different locations, but that's why we bought this item. We wanted to simplify our digital lives into one organized location and this helped us accomplish that. We are using it in the RAID 1 configuration so that each hard disk is a mirror of the other...maximizing our security, but only giving us 3TB of space to work with (which is plenty for us).

It's cheap, it's compact, seemingly well designed and up to WDs usually high quality. BUT, isn't a viable solution:- way too slow- overheats after 5-6 hours of use. Doesnt have a built in fan so you'll never be able to tuck it discreetly/securely out of sight on a self etc. It'll need to be on full view, and near a fan/window/draft/AC-unit.- ended up reading too many posts elsewhere about the RAID setup on this device not being fail proof. That several different types of data, drive or power related crashes would render the second drive useless. So what's the point?!- did i mention it was slow. Too slow to regularly copy over 5-10Gb of data from a client's session.

I'm using this to store all my pictures, music, and videos and to backup three computers. I immediately changed the drive setting to RAID 1 because I wanted the security of a duplicate copy of all my data. I love that I can access my data from any computer. I've used the DLNA server to stream video to my TV and it works great. It comes back online quickly after being in sleep mode. The only negative would be the noise level. If all is quiet in the room and the drive is running it is noticable. Would not recommend placing it in a bedroom or any place you want to keep quiet. Overall a very nice unit.

Comments about Western Digital 6TB My Book Live Duo:
Ive purchased three 6T all but one of the 6T's have had issues, in fact the same exact issues, overheating and failing to transfer data to them at a reasonable speed. Initially if works fine until the device reaches 75% capacity, then it slows from 50-40meg to 300k transfer speed using Ethernet, totally unable and thus overheats. Spent hours on the phone to tech support, all they could do was a factory restore, problem remained after. Spend the money and get a N4800 4-Bay SMB NAS Server!

Comments about Western Digital 6TB My Book Live Duo:
I bought this for our studio because I got a bit tired of manually backing up the drives after all these years. After extensive research (drobo, synology, buffalo...) I decided this unit deliver the best ROI (return on investment). Set up was a snap although it did take quite some time configure the raid 1 (I did it overnight so no big deal). While the write speeds are not blazing fast in raid mode, they are acceptable considering it is being written to two disks (I think two fast Caviar Black drives instead of the included Green ones would speed it up a bit). PSD files take about twice as long as Jpegs. There is a weird thing that happens in Adobe Bridge: When the drive is selected, bridge will never sort it the same way twice which is frustrating. The unit is whisper quiet and "wakes up" very fast. Considering the cost of most 3TB raid drives I considered, I can get used to a negligible slowdown in writing as it won't affect my workflow.

I bought this drive so that I could access files stored on my own drive rather than in the cloud as well as to free up room on my MacBook by storing my iTunes library remotely. It was easy to set up and transfer files onto. There was an initial problem accessing the drive from my iPhone, but disabling sharing and then re-enabling it fixed the problem. I would definitely recommend this drive to anyone who wants a secure backup and storage solution that they can manage themselves without resorting to cloud based solutions.

6 TB, raidable to 3TB with built in backup, this is exactly what I was looking for. I have a lot of music and pictures stored on this, which is now accessible remotely via wifi. You can also use the iphone app, but it counts against your data plan unless you are connected via wifi. The file transfer and set up were easy, loading the software onto multiple computers means they can all view this drive as though it was another drive on that computer.

Between my wife and self, its hard to collaborate on family content with two computers and having been a victim of disk failure and data loss in the past, the Live Duo appears to be the most cost effective route to each of these issues.I bought it for its gigabit NAS and RAID mirror abilities. Pros: it provides just that and is quick about it. Cons: runs warm and loud so I feel like allowing it to sleep is appropriate but bringing it out of sleep will hold your computer's response back while the disks spin up. This is nothing abnormal from a HDD standpoint... just that I've become acustomed to SSDs now... so waaa. The control menu could be a little snappier considering theres a linux base in it. The functionality is straight forward yet seemingly a little lacking. Sometimes figuring simple things out take a minute. Like the fact that you have to reboot the device to actually change the workgroup seems like a glitch that wasn't explained in documentation. Plus it appears shares don't always show up as quickly as they should - usb shares gave me trouble.Shares and users are easy to work with but the rest of the bells and whistles I have no idea how they work - like media server usage or the security on remote login, to name a couple. Now... how do I protect it if my house catches on fire, hmmmm.....

As to the product - this "personal cloud" is awesome! Western Digital will no doubt improve the software for newbies to set it up, but this product works as advertised for the network/engineer professional. I regular work on 6 different computers or portable devices, so a consolidated cloud is a great solution. Havign the mirrored back-up support with dual drives makes this a no brainer. Thanks!
