This 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DT Standard Zoom Lens from Sony is is a DT-series Alpha lens that has been optimized for cropped image sensors, and as a result it is not recommended for use with larger full-frame cameras. It's 18-55mm focal length is the 35mm equivalent of a longer 27-82.5mm standard zoom lens. It is constructed of 8 elements in 7 groups, including two aspheric lens elements, which help to deliver sharp, clear photos throughout the zoom range. It has a minimum focusing distance of 9.8" and a front-end filter diameter of 55mm.

35mm Equivalent: 27-82.5mm
This 18-55mm lens has a 3.1x zoom factor, and is the 35mm equivalent of a 27-82.5mm lens on the cropped APS-C cameras it was designed for.
Aperture Range: f/3.5-36
This lens has a varying maximum aperture of f/3.5-5.6 as you increase the focal length, and minimum aperture of f/22-36.
Optimized For APS-C Size / DT-Format Alpha & Minolta DSLRs
Optimized for Sony Alpha APS-C sensor cameras, this lens covers a 3.1x zoom range from 18mm to 55mm, which is the 35mm equivalent of an 27-82.5mm lens.
2x Aspheric Glass Lens Elements
These precision lens elements correct distortion for sharper, more visually accurate images across the entire zoom range of the lens.
Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM)
Designed for fast, smooth and silent automatic focusing, Sony's unique Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) technology achieves high torque at low speed with rapid start/stop response. The AF control signals from the camera body are sent to the lens-mounted SAM unit, which drives the lens directly, helping to assure quick and accurate AF response.
7x Circular Aperture Blades
Circular aperture blades produce smooth, rounded bokeh background effects when capturing spot-light sources in your pictures. Because the aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.
Filter Diameter: 55mm
The 55mm from filter thread does not rotate, allowing rotating polarizing filters to be used.

Comments about Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DT Standard Zoom Lens:

This lens came with my A-57 as a kit lens. As far as image quality it actualy performs fairly well, good sharp images with suprisingly good corner sharpness! The lens has pretty much no coma problems when taking night or low light pics of say street lights. Produces little to no vignetting.
Barrel distortion can be strong when at 18mm, and the Bokeh effect is really a little harsh and disappointing. Build quality is sorta on the cheap side with a plastic mount. There is no lens hood supplied with this and if you purchase one make sure it is the barrel type and not a petal shape as contrary to the specs on this lens the filter ring and hood mount DO rotate makeing a petal type lens hood useless.
I use the hood from my old Minolta 75-300mm D zoom (55mm thread also) on this lens and have had good results from it when needed.
To conclude this is a decent "kit" lens which produces fairly good image quality. The build quality is a little cheap and only time will tell how long it will hold up. Only rated at 3 stars due to: No lens hood supplied, mount spins during focusing and plastic mount.

I got this lens when I purchased my camera, and I can tell you I take amazing shots with it, I'm thinking to upgrade my lens pretty soon but I honestly have no complain about it. Take a look at my pics and see yourself.

Comments about Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DT Standard Zoom Lens:

The quality is great and the versitility for landscape shots is unbeatable unless you want to get that cliff on the other side of the mountains. There is where the problem arises. Besides the short zoom it is a great lens.
