The Nikon SB-910 Speedlight is Nikon's flagship flash unit--the most advanced in the Speedlight range. The SB-910 advances Nikon's lighting mastery by providing easy operation and menu navigation, with a newly simplified graphic user interface (GUI). A dedicated Menu button with quick access to custom settings also simplifies the flash operation. The improved thermal protection system prevents overheating during rapid firing by automatically slowing down the recycle time rather than shutting down the flash. Hard filters for fluorescent and tungsten lighting are included, and the flash automatically changes the camera's white balance to match the filter in use.
The automated zoom head covers 17mm to 200mm lenses (in 35mm/FX format), and can cover this range in just 1.2 seconds. This flash lets you select from three light distribution patterns: Standard, Center-weighted, and Even. It will also automatically detect if it is connected to a DX or FX format camera, and adjust itself accordingly.
The SB-910 can work as a stand-alone flash, or as part of a wireless group, either in Commander mode or as a slave (remote). The i-TTL system in this flash supports Advanced Wireless Lighting and versatile functions for up to four groups of Speedlights, with 3 remote i-TTL Speedlight groups controlled through the master SB-910. i-TTL Balanced Fill-Flash flash control employs Nikon's Advanced Data Communication System. This system provides an improved method for the monitor pre-flash and wireless operation that marks an evolution in higher precision--it forms the core of the Creative Lighting System.
Note! Please note that the SB-910 is only fully compatible with DSLR cameras that support i-TTL operation. With older cameras that use the D-TTL mode, only [A] Auto mode (non-TTL) is available.

Two of these and a couple Octoboxes and you're in business. I have an SB 800 and now this second flash, the SB 910. The SB 800 has proven to be a reliable flash for me for years - The SB 910 is even better and only requires four AA's for maximum performance instead of five like the older model SB 800. I use the SU 800 Commander to remotely fire them. In large buildings or outside you will need an RF setup - but in the studio the SB 910 like the SB 800 responds instantly to the SU 800's infrared signals.
I shoot direct and with softboxes like the Octobox at 1/16th power and still rarely need to raise the camera ISO above 200 unless I really need the depth of field. Or I could switch to full power or anything in-between on the SB 910. At 1/16th power, the recycle time is virtually instantaneous and the batteries last a long long time. Only a pro shooting thousands of shots at full power in a day might need an auxiliary battery pack.
Incidentally, and it may be a bit counter intuitive, but inside a 40" Octobox you should select 105mm on the head zoom - but do your own tests.
You can spend weeks familiarizing yourself with all the features of the SB 910 - I'll let you do that - I'm too busy using it just in manual mode. Remember, one of the advantages of digital photography is the ability to check your exposures in real time and fine tune your camera/flash settings. But if you have critical shooting to do, out of the studio, then every imagined auto setting and override is available. I suggest you start by selecting those sections of the instruction manual that address what you want to do rather than trying to figure it out from the LCD menus :)

Comments about Nikon SB-910 AF Speedlight i-TTL Shoe Mount Flash:
A typical Nikon product with exceptional quality. Can be used with minimal review of instructions, but to get full use of the SB-910 Speedlight, you need to delve into the instruction Manual. The Manual isn't bad, but I sure learned a lot by getting a copy of Mike Hagen's The Nikon Creative Lighting System.

I have an SB-900 which is a fine speedlight, the SB-910 does not overheat as quickly. The controls on the back are not the same, if you have both of these as I do, get familiar with which buttons do what. I really like this flash.

Super easy to use. Upgraded from SB-900 which continuously overheated. Just used the 910 for the first time over 10 hours. 3 hours of the reception was in dim lighting and I used most of the night. NEVER OVERHEATED! LOVE!

This one is an add-on to my SB-900 to use in some in-door shotting events. Compare with the SB-900, I felt the light distribution was a little bit better than SB-900, more even, a bit softer.
Quality build is solid. It just helps to get the job done.

Comments about Nikon SB-910 AF Speedlight i-TTL Shoe Mount Flash:
As a professional photographer for 30+ years, I have been through every Nikon digital digital photography release of cameras and flashes. Lately, shooting with the D800's and D3's I have not been happy with the SB900's. All the problems any pro is aware of. Overheating, poor camera/flash communication, slow recycle....so I purchased a couple of SB910's recently. Nikon seems to have finally worked out the bugs and the 910's are working better than the SB800's or SB900's. I shoot everything from Real Estate to Weddings and so far the results have been the best I have had in a long time. I would recommend the SB910's to anyone who is frustrated with the 900's and although not inexpensive, the price of the flash is justified when you have no time for problems.

I love the new Nikon Flash. Reliable and great programmable features. Love the off flash remote option. No need for extra remote controls if your camera has the remote option built in. I use the D7000 and can use this flash off camera with no extra required equipment (other than a stand). If you are going to be shooting weddings or like events, get the extra battery pack. This flash eats through my rechargeable batteries quickly.
