The Flash Diffuser Pro from DEMB can help turn your hot-shoe flash into a lighting instrument as versatile as a studio light. The 4.5 x 5" white Flip-it! reflector is attached using a universal strap to an upward-pointing flash--the reflector is mounted on a hinge that allows you to fix it at any angle, while a front diffusion panel is included that attaches to the Flip-it! strap using touch-tabs. With this arrangement, you can adjust your flash for whatever conditions you encounter--inside, outside, portraits, group photos, low ceiling, high ceiling, etc. This versatility lets you make photos with soft, shadow-free light no matter what the circumstances. The reflector is interchangeable with other Flip-it! reflectors.

I will alway bounce my full size (such as Canon 550EX or 430EX) hotshoe flash either mounted on the hotshoe or off-camera mounted on a flash bracket. IMO, the Flash Diffuser Pro (DFD) is the most versatile flash modifier on the market and I have tried many different units. Because of its articulating bounce card, the DFD can be used in varied situations from a standard size room to outdoors at night with no ceiling off which to bounce. The quality of the light either when shooting portraits (see: Richard Crowe portrait examples linked from the Demb Flash Products website) or when shooting outside at night (see: Yangshuo China night market images linked from the smugmug.com portrait website site). I also like that the DFD can be attached to virtually any full size hotshoe flash. I use my DFD interchangeably on my 550EX, 430EX and 420EX flashes and have loaned it to a friend who shoots Nikon. The DFD is lightweight, folds into a small package and is easily transportable. It is a gem of an accessory and I would not think of shooting flash without it.

I've been trying to return the diffuser pro, and apparently I'm working too much to catch B&H during CS hours, and the online system won't let me RMA this. Simply put, I do not get it. I'm the type that does major research when choosing anything for my passion (and job) of photography.
My last two diffusers were Gary Fong, but after paying $100 for a WhaleTail, which works well, but only lasted me about 6 months before the tabs broke off one by one... I will NEVER buy another Fong product.
The appeal in this diffuser is that it's an intelligent product that requires light awareness... which was one of the reasons that I chose the whaletail... in another words, you can "feather" the output with reflections and directly available flash through/around the diffuser.
HOWEVER... this is a very unsophisticated approach, which is still composed of bits and parts. I've read many condescending diffuser reviews, implying that this system is the one that pros, with light awareness, almost always choose.
Hmm... well... it works, but I don't think it works well. The quality of the reflected light and the look of my images when testing this diffuser told me everything I needed to know, for MY taste.
I have a definite look in my photos... I like to see my subject softly lit, and not too many stops over the BG, unless the BG is dark. Even in the sample images on Demb's own site... the images aren't my style of lighting. To me the subject looks too bright if they're remotely close to the cam. Even closing the "lid" down on the front diffuser "screens"(?) just creates a much smaller point of light then you'll get with something like the Rogue Flash Bender (which I will also review, since I bought it at the same time AND will buy another, plus another size, of that unit... which is everything this one isn't).
If you like your subject to REALLY pop off the background... I think you MAY like this diffuser, however, it's definitely not for me. The Rogue gave me the results I wanted, on a level that this diffuser couldn't approach. If I worked for this company I would immediately buy an assortment of diffusers and go out testing... because the Demb name is, from what I read, synonymous with "professional"... however, I'd GLADLY put any of my shots with the Rogue up against those I struggled to get lit with the Demb... and 99% of you would choose the Rogue pictures with CLEARLY superior lighting.
For the record, I don't recommend Fong products highly either. They work OK, but I'm not impressed with the performance (1-trick-pony) or durability (whaletail did more, but didn't make it 6 months before junking out).

Fits my SB900 perfectly. This is a very well made item. It's strong point is the flexibility of use. You can configure this diffuser in many ways. Very useful outdoors when there is no ceiling to bounce off of. It would have been nice if a carry case would have been included. Overall a fantastic, well built product that helps eliminate shadows and softens your light.

I have been using the Joe Demb Flash Diffuser Pro for years. It is the BEST and most VERSATILE hotshoe flash modifier I have ever used. It can fit on any full-size hotshoe flash (I use it on Canon 550EX, 430EX and 420EX flashes). It provides wonderful light for virually any kind of photography. I shot this portrait using a Canon 7D with a 70-200mm f/4L IS lens. I lit the portraits with a bounced 550EX on an off camera bracket and modified the light with the Demb Flash Diffuser Pro.articulating Flip-it reflector of the DFD allows me to bounce flash in areas that have no ceiling or in venues in which the ceiling is too high or too dark to bounce off.BTW: The smaller Demb Photojournalist Flip-it is an excellent addition to my tiny Canon 270EX flash. It provides very nie bounced lighting and also allows decent lighting when the 270EX is used in the portrait position.

Comments about DEMB Flash Diffuser Pro:
In indoor use the DEMB flash diffuser Pro produces very even, soft lighting for candid portrait work at 6-8 foot distance. I've used other diffusers several years and find it harder to regulate the results than with the DEMB Pro, which produced good results with almost every shot. Furthermore, the very lightweight DEMB unit is extremely compact when folded, almost flat, fits easily into my camera bag. In the future when I travel it will be the DEMB unit I carry with me. My only concern is whether it will stand up to the rigors of travel.

The product works great for those times where bouncing off walls/ceiling just won't cut it. This will jump in and provide clean/soft shots for Receptions, or Event Photography and the best part is that YOU can control the diffused light amount. Although, the Sto-Fen or Gary Fongs are simliar, but are all or nothing and provide no tweaking. I like to at least have some control over what I find acceptable in my photographs.

I've use many other kinds of diffusion/bounce schemes, but this is the best so far. It's easy to put on quickly, and the bounce card can fold down along the flash head, which makes it easier to pack and walk around with.
The hinge that allows you to adjust the card is well made, and seems pretty sturdy. Great product, great price.
