I want to first start off by saying this 502 fluid head is a beauty. Its nice and smooth and I love the fact that it's compatible with old manfrotto base plates. No jerky movements in the pan and tilt so there is no need for the ol' rubber band trick. The clamps for the legs are nice, solid and strong. If you're using DSLR's or other small cameras, there really is no need to bump up to a 504 head. The 502 will do just fine even with a crazy handheld rig or cage wrapped around your DSLR. The handle is great and I think all of the lock-off switches are in the perfect place. Just spend a couple of days with the thing and you'll get used to it in no time. My only small complaint (and this really is no big deal) is that it doesn't have an illuminated bubble level. The 504 has it so I think manfrotto should put it on the 502.

Now I come to the tripod legs. Don't get me wrong, these sticks are light and tall. If I were to do run-and-gun stuff, this would be a great choice. The legs collapse to a very small size so it's very convenient for travel. They even add a nice little rubber strap that keeps the legs collapsed when in storage. The down sides of these legs is that the spreaders are not removable, nor do they extend for low shots. The legs themselves collapse lower than any other tripod I've seen thanks to the telescope design, but if you want to use the legs to get any lower when it's fully collapsed, you're probably going to have to go handheld or place it on a hi-hat or sandbag. My other complaint with the legs are that the spreader connectors are made of plastic. I was slightly disappointed with that. They just look like they might break if it gets put through some rough handling. I feel I have to put in extra care so that doesn't happen. If you want a heavier duty tripod with a more solid base, I recommend the 546b tripod legs. Also the bag that this tripod comes with is just a thin cover with a strap. No padding in the case at all.

If you want a light tripod system for things like weddings or run-and-gun shooting, get this tripod. The light weight of the legs will definitely help you out. Once the legs are planted, you're going to have a nice and smooth time using the fluid head. However, if you're looking for a heavier duty tripod, you might want to look elsewhere. The head is a great choice for DSLRS and small cameras. If you're planning on going heavier, get the 504. The entire tripod system has a very solid build and doesn't feel cheap. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.

I purchased this to use for both still and video with my DSLR. My consumer grade sixty dollar tripod was just not stable or smooth enough to handle video. This system has a great head, but the legs lack the stability needed, especially if you put any resistence on the head for left/right pan shots. The legs would just twist with the head. Very frustrating. I returned this setup and replaced it with the Manfrotto 475B tripod with the 502 head for flat base legs. That setup is exactly what I was looking for, stable as a rock. The 502 head is terrific, highly recommend it, and it works well for both photo and video.

Comments about Manfrotto MVH502A Fluid Head and MVT502AM Tripod System With Carrying Bag:

If you are doing any real video, you need something like this. Photography tripods do not work for video, even if they have pan/tilt heads. A good fluid head makes all the difference. This one is big, and, yes, it's heavy, but that's good. I was taping an event recently with three cameras, this is the only one that allowed me to shoot comfortably over the heads of seated people.
The only negative I found is that the bubble level is very hard to see when the tripod is set up at its highest position.

I bought this as my first video tripod and have used for several projects. The tripod also acts as a support for my timelapse rig. The head has taken a lot of abuse but still is smooth and unchanged. The legs are ok but the clamps they use to secure the legs seem kind of poor. 4 of the 6 clamps are nice and smooth and then the other 2 feel like i am about to break them when i tighten them down. All in all i cant complain The head is smooth and the legs are sable when deployed correctly.

Excellent tripod kit with excellent head and great legs! I ordered this for my JVC HM150 video camera and it's a perfect fit as far as I am concerned. I spent a couple of minutes to ensure proper set up of the fluid-head drags and I get smooth tilts and pans. I am using this setup for run-and-gun and one-on-one interviews and I could not be happier. Professional look, professional feel. Solid but light. Good price for value, and I still need to send in my rebate package.

The tripod is amazingly light considering that it provides a very stable mount. It feels very slid, well built. The legs can be extended and retracted in a few seconds. The fluid head feels very smooth as well. All in all a great value.

Comments about Manfrotto MVH502A Fluid Head and MVT502AM Tripod System With Carrying Bag:

I had this for about 2 weeks now and so far its does the job. It's sturdy, dependable, it's pretty good. A couple of things though that make it from being 5 stars. 1. It's a little bulky especially since it aluminum. 2. The head casts a shadow over the level so in MOST situation you have to tilt the head or try and shed some light to precisely see the bubble. 3. The pan lock is a little awkward being in the front bottom of the head. 4. It is not a "true" fluid head so you can definitely feel the springs.I upgrade from an induro akb1 which is a consumer NON-ball head tripod so for me its a giant upgrade thus I really enjoy using it however I don't know how I would feel if I downgrade from a e.g. 504 hdv head. Overall so far so good, I'm sure i will be able to put it to good use till my next upgrade :)

Bought this to use for my Ex3. Love it so far. Only complaint I have is the leveling bubble is too small to see and is not lighted. Used it for the first time last weekend it it performed great. The ball head is nice but not very solid. Panning is a little jerky.

Great set up for me at this stage, and my Lumix GH2.The head is very good with a nice consistant feel to it. The legs are nice and light enough, and with a little weight on them can handle sudden pans or tilts if you're that way inclined, but I wouldn't call them rugged. I think I can understand the logic behind the fixed spreader keeping height and load in check. Very happy with the price though.

I love this head. Silky smooth, works like a dream. I don't love the legs, but I knew what I was getting, so this is still a four star review. The legs just feel a bit lightweight, as other reviewers have pointed out. In any case, it's a step up from the tripod system I was using before, so I'm happy.
