I've bought 5 drives with my new Synology 1513+ and I couldn't be happier. The system is online for 3 weeks and performance of the drives is fantastic. The fact the HGST offers 3 years warranty plus the price point compared to the Seagate 4TB option was the determinant factor for choosing the HGST.When compared to the 4TB 7.2K RPM Deskstar option, for my use case the Coolspin are performing well above my expectations. The 5.9K drive is a good compromise, at the time of my purchase the... premium for the 7.2K per disk was too steep. If you have a Synology these drives will fit the bill and perform really well.

Installed drive in a freshly formatted Win 7 64 bit Pro system with all updated drivers and firmware.

Drive consistently fails and goes offline after a couple minutes of substained I/O such as converting a movie to MP4 etc... Shutting down the machine and powering off and on, the drive returns to the system.

Am running Intel RST at latest levels in a nonRAID simple SATA setup.

I am returning the drive to be replaced as this is not normal behavior. I've not seen this with any other smaller 1 and 2 TB Hitachi drives...even installed in the machine or slots.

The real test of a disk drive is how long it lasts, and I have not had this one very long. My previous experience with HGST drives has been very positive. After reading reviews with lots of problems for other brands, I decided to go with HGST.

Comments about HGST 4TB Deskstar Coolspin 3.5" SATA III Internal Desktop Hard Drive:

After researching drives from various manufacturers, I finally decided on these HGST drives as they seemed to be the most highly rated in terms of overall reliability in the studies that I've read. They were slightly more expensive than drives from other manufacturers, but given how important the data that I store on these drives is, the premium in price is worth it for the extra reliability.

Purchased 5 for my Synology DS1813+ NAS and they're very much at home there, working perfectly. I can't wait to get 3 more. The drives are not the 'coolest' operating temps I've seen but that's probably due to the 4 (?) platters inside, with that in consideration they run quite cool still. They are easily the quietest drives I've ever owned, making other drives I thought were quiet sound particularly loud now.Unlike some, speed hasn't been an issue for me.They ooze quality, I have a new favourite brand HDD. Early days yet, so I'll come back in 6 months time and update.

I purchased 2 drives to replace the existing 1TB drives in my Synology 412+, even though there are not listed as approved drives in the Synology Tech specs. They work perfectly. As soon as the drives where dropped into the bays the green light indicated that they were ready to go. I upgraded the latest DSM software and they run perfect, no bad sectors, no shutting of & no issues till now. They cannot be beat for the price and B&H fantastic price & free shipping overnight. I am trying to offload my WD Red 1TB drives on @ and I may grab 2 more and set the forseeable future with 16TB RAID.

These are good hard drives for bulk digital storage. Not the fastest, but they run cool and are pretty durable. I have a couple of these drives and they are working fine.I deducted one star because this particular drive was hard to set up with a GPT partition via Windows 7 Disk Management, I had no problems doing that with the other drive I got here, not sure what's going on there. The HGST GPT Disk Manager is a little rough around the edges.Other than that, these are good drives and a good value. Unlike other well known online tech vendors, B&H does a good job of packing these sensitive components so they arrive undamaged.

Although variations of this drive have been on the market for years now, the Deskstar model remains one of my favorite. I just bought another to use for backing up game mods on my laptop. The performance is excellent use with highpoint drive dock with 2x USB3 engines built-in(like 2 robust engines in a Farari 458 spider). I alread have two in an older PC, and have installed several for family members all are still running stong after heavy use. Highly recommended.

Never had a failure of a Deskstar to date. Good value and WD has not changed the technology.

As advertised. I am using 12 of these in a Supermicro server using Linux & mdadm. No issues so far! I am able to get decent speeds, they are cool and use just on 4 watts of power each.

Unfortunately, the computer that I installed this hard drive in, did not recognize it. I have had 2TB drives in that machine without issue. I believe it is due to the sheer size of the drive. I am in the process of upgrading to a 64 bit operating system, and will have to see if that will recognize the drive.

It's been a long time since I've purchased a hard drive and I spent days doing research. Some of the qualities that are important to me are: reliability, reliability, reliability.

Guess you get the point? I looked into Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba, Samsung (SSD), and Hitachi and based upon my research - Hitachi is the king.

After narrowing down the brand, time to look for the specifics. I saw there regular drives, NAS drive, Coolspin, etc.. It wasn't a difficult choice to purchase the Coolspin model because it runs cooler and what does that mean? Less heat! Less heat means less wear and tear on the hard drive.

In the end, I'm happy and grateful for B&H. No tax to California, and free shipping! I LOVE that!

I'm not quite sure how to review an internal hard drive. It works, it has the advertised amount of space, and what more could you want from a cheap, large drive?
