Please don't leave bad reviews for either B&H Photo or the HDD all over the web, without reading the info below and understanding the tech. DYI tech takes a little reading. These drives will work with older motherboards with some easy tweaks or cheap add on controller cards. Just google for info and for forums.Make sure your motherboard's BIOS and chipset supports the higher capacity. So don't hesitate to buy these larger drives. They are the future and save a lot of energy and space. If your not sure you can always buy a controller card for cheap..... High quality engineering. Well built and protected PCB and casing.Cool running, fast, excellent caching, handles large and small file writes and transfers very well, great spin up speed.I can confirm the 7200rpm speed and 64mb cache. You need to format this with GPT in "Disk management" in "Computer management".Formatted Total available capacity is 3.6 TB. That's how formatting works.Works well with Windows 7 64 bit.Hitachi's always have been VERY relaible.Handles USB to SATA and e-sata convertors well and the full capacity is recognised.Remember to buy an SATA 3 cable from B&H as I bought several and they all allow the SATA 3 speed! Stuff sold by other retailers are suspect nowadays. ......CONS:Too expensive for this size. The Thailand flooding caused this, but it is long over now and hope Hitachi reduces the prices on these drives to pre flood levels.OTHER THOUGHTS.B&H Photo is my new go to place for electronics. The procesing and shipping is simply fast and wonderfull. All the stuff I have bought so far have been top notch brand new in original packaging and they arrive in 2-3 days even with standard shipping! They pack harddrives with TWO DIFFERENT MATERIALS FOR EXTRA SAFETY. That is another reason to buy from B&H, because HDDs are very sensitive.I used go to this other place, but B&H Photo's prices are wonderful!I plan to get about 5-6 more of these and my company wants 100, if these drives goes down to the ~$200 level. So here is waiting for that discount :-)I need to buy some quickly.Buy as much as you need of this model, as it is rock solid.

I purchased 4 of these drives at the same time for an expansion of my NAS.One of the drives failed out of the box.The remaining 3 are working fine.If you buy these drives keep EVERYTHING you get and do not write or tear the box it comes in because Hitachi will NOT accept any missing parts or damaged boxs if you need to return. EVEN the the special offer cards in the box must be intact! I'm serious Hitachi is looking for any microscopic item to disqualify your RMA.

I use this drive as a data drive with a 200GB SSD Boot Drive. The combination gives fast boot and load times, and large amounts of storage. The drive is relatively quiet in operation. It's not the fastest drive out there, but its speed is good. I just recently installed the drive, so I can't say much about reliability, yet. Backblaze has more to say about the reliability of HGST drives, you can Google it.

I've had no problems with it so far. For those of you who don't know, Hitachi was bought by Western Digital so these are really just lower priced WD drives. Came in a retail box, no cable (not an issue for me).

I use it as a back up for a 3 TB drive. I did a long format for NTFS (takes several hours) and then copied nearly 2 TB of data to it without issue and have been using it since. So far so good.

I have 4 of these drives in my synology nas and have not had a problem with any of them. Very reliable and right priced for my needs.
Speed is not an issue on the nas for running movies or viewing pictures, but I have it in raid configuration. Can not speak for a single drive cfg. Some of the HGST drives have been operating without issue for more than a year. The drive comes well packaged and simple to install. I can not speak for gaming speeds, but my videos from my camera are all high definition movies.

I use these drives for backing up large FCP projects / media from a 12TB Raid. I use a toaster drive to interface with these easily. I think these drives are a great value. And studies have shown that these Hitachi 4TB drives are reliable as well. Of course, you'll do your own research. But definitely back-up your work.

This is the third pair of HGST drives that I have bought for use in Icy Dock external RAID1 array enclosures. When you can't afford to lose your data, HGST drives are what you want to use.

Bought this for my Drobo 5s to replace a failed drive and go up in size. First put in an external enclosure and connected to my mac to format via Disk Utility (Mac OS Extended Journaled) -- Had no need for any other files/software pre-installed on the drive. After done, put in Drobo with no issues. Extremely fast.Only 4 of 5 because I have not used long enough to know durability. But to this point, great buy at $ for 4TB 7200 rpm.

Picked up 4 of these for a sysnology nas. Everything worked no dead drives no bad sectors after full drive tests. Drives packaged and shipped tightly in box. A big plus if you've received many DOA drives from other vendors like I have.

I purchased 5 of these units to install in my new Drobo 5D. Installation went seamlessly and drives are performing flawlessly after 30 days of use.

The Drobo 5D system with 5 of these drives runs much cooler than the Seagate Black Armor I have with 4 Seagate 3TB 7200RPM drives.

I use the 4tb hard drive for editing video and storage. I was running out of space even though I had 15 plus terebytes. I wanted a 7200 4tb drive B&H had it at the best price on the web and instores. I got it. They delivered it quickly now I have 4tb of space. YEA!

4TB is the biggest you can get currently in one drive, and this one is a 7200 RPM drive - many 4TB drives are not and try to hide it by not offering the spec. The warranty is longer at three years and good for the price point, though you may want to pay a bit more to get 7200 rpm disks with a longer warranty of five years (a few more dollars for two extra years warranty is worth considering if you are putting this in a RAID or Drobo

I've had good luck with these in a Synology NAS. I can't speak much about performance because I'm limited by the network. My main concerns are reliability, high capacity and reasonable cost. If you have similar needs, consider these drives.

So far, I've purchased these six times over the last year and not a single one DOA or SMART problem reports. These are shipped with full packaging. Drives that are OEM/bulk packaged often do not survive shipping.
