Please don't leave bad reviews for either B&H Photo or the HDD all over the web, without reading the info below and understanding the tech. DYI tech takes a little reading. These drives will work with older motherboards with some easy tweaks or cheap add on controller cards. Just google for info and for forums.Make sure your motherboard's BIOS and chipset supports the higher capacity. So don't hesitate to buy these larger drives. They are the future and save a lot of energy and space. If your not sure you can always buy a controller card for cheap..... High quality engineering. Well built and protected PCB and casing.Cool running, fast, excellent caching, handles large and small file writes and transfers very well, great spin up speed.I can confirm the 7200rpm speed and 64mb cache. You need to format this with GPT in "Disk management" in "Computer management".Formatted Total available capacity is 3.6 TB. That's how formatting works.Works well with Windows 7 64 bit.Hitachi's always have been VERY relaible.Handles USB to SATA and e-sata convertors well and the full capacity is recognised.Remember to buy an SATA 3 cable from B&H as I bought several and they all allow the SATA 3 speed! Stuff sold by other retailers are suspect nowadays. ......CONS:Too expensive for this size. The Thailand flooding caused this, but it is long over now and hope Hitachi reduces the prices on these drives to pre flood levels.OTHER THOUGHTS.B&H Photo is my new go to place for electronics. The procesing and shipping is simply fast and wonderfull. All the stuff I have bought so far have been top notch brand new in original packaging and they arrive in 2-3 days even with standard shipping! They pack harddrives with TWO DIFFERENT MATERIALS FOR EXTRA SAFETY. That is another reason to buy from B&H, because HDDs are very sensitive.I used go to this other place, but B&H Photo's prices are wonderful!I plan to get about 5-6 more of these and my company wants 100, if these drives goes down to the ~$200 level. So here is waiting for that discount :-)I need to buy some quickly.Buy as much as you need of this model, as it is rock solid.

The package came with a dented box, I guess UPS is being so busy or careless to handle fragile item in a proper manner.
Fortunately, the drive is still working.
My Dell Inspiron desktop recognizes the new drive at boot. Window 7 recognizes the drive after running "Control Panel" -> "Computer Management" -> "Disk Management" (allocation)
Access time for read and write is three times faster then the "Green SATA 3" drive I had before. One annoying thins is the drive makes whizzing and clicking noises and vibrates during read and write access. I wonder if this noisy operation will hurt the drive in the long run and I can end up loosing 4TB of my data some day!!!

Seems to work like all the other hard drives I buy. Just wish the companies would ship flat head screws for mounting since tray systems don't care for the bulkier rounded head screws that I always get.

We used to use Seagate Barracuda 3TB drives as our media for archiving our video projects, and they were okay (1 failure out of 20 drives after only a few reads and writes), but after reading about the research by the manager of a large IT department, showing that the 4TB HGST Deskstar drives had been significantly more reliable over a three year period, I decided to try them. So far, so good.

Comments about HGST 4TB Deskstar 3.5" SATA III Internal Desktop Hard Drive:

The drive seems to work fine -- I haven't had any technical problems with it -- but it's the noisiest drive I own. It's not rotational noise -- the seeking mechanism makes a "poit-poit" noise like someone drumming on the side of a half-full soda can. It's not a failure indication, just an unfortunate resonance. However, for the price, I shouldn't complain.

This drive has high reliability ratings according to backblaze and my own personal experience (knock on wood.) Drive from B&H arrived fast, powered up and partitioned quickly. Reasonably quiet. I checked on Hitachi's website and the manufacturer warranty is also valid (you should always do this yourself when checking in a new drive.) I think it was something like 3 months out of the factory.

Comments about HGST 4TB Deskstar 3.5" SATA III Internal Desktop Hard Drive:

I bought this hard drive based on the reputation of HGST, mostly due to Backblaze. The Hitachi/HGST drives fail far less often than Seagate and WD. As I have only had this disk for a short time, I can't really say whether it delivers.

All I can say definitively at this time is that...
                      - it's more expensive than other brands
                      - it's a little on the loud side when chugging away
                      - it feels slower than my old Maxtor 7200 disks (purely anecdotal)
                      - it seems to spin down more aggressively when I am working, which is annoying

Again, I bought this because I really don't want a failure. If it does not fail, the cons are (IMO) a small price to pay. It was painless to set up, has nice capacity, and seems to be operating flawlessly.

I have many hundreds of terabytes of the storage on the variety of boxes in our server room. They are mostly on hardware RAID, significant portion of actual drives are these ones. Drive failures are very rare, and this is why we use these particular drives. If you tell me some drives do not fail on you, I would say: you don't have large enough number of drives, so you don't represent the statistics. All hard drives fail with some probability. These particular ones are most reliable - at least in our server room.

Comments about HGST 4TB Deskstar 3.5" SATA III Internal Desktop Hard Drive:

Drives above 2TB need to be user programmed to access storage space above the 2TB. The instructions lead to a site to download software which was supposed to do this. The software was totally useless and I had to find a 3rd party software online to do it, which also requires another HDD to be installed on. Kinda stupid it wasn't set up from the factory. Also 3rd party software was accidentally installed on the 4TB drive and I had to reinstall windows 8.1 b/c it screwed it up during the HDD partition extending. However overall fantastic product, just need to have software ACTUALLY available and ez to use or just factory set-up.
