Comments about Western Digital 300GB VelociRaptor 3.5" SATA Internal Hard Drive:
My purpose for using the drive was to replace the original hard drive in my MacPro. The old is four years old and time to think about replacing before it goes. Rather than doing a direct copy of the original I decided to re-install OS X Lion from scratch. I also wanted to eliminate software that is not being used so by re-installing the software, I hope to end up with a "Lean Mean Machine". There are still a few things that need to be done on the software end, but so far things look very promising. OS X gets up to operating speed much faster, but perhaps the most dramatic thing I have noticed is that Photoshop CS5 loads up in about three seconds.
One of my concerns was that the drive is considered to be noisy but I have not found it to be any different than the noise level prior to installation. By the way I have four drives in my MacPro right now as the original is still installed. The other two drives are for art and photography images which are regularly backed up with external drives.
As of this time I don't see anything to not like about the drive but of course just a few days of use does not tell the full story. That will take some time down the road. Worth noting is that the drive is smaller than normal, but includes it own sleeve which takes the same space as a standard drive.
