I've only had this drive for about two weeks now, but I think it's a good time to review it - while it's fresh in my mind.I'm using this drive with my Mac, through a USB 3.0 port, as a general-backup drive. That means it isn't used constantly, but is plugged/unplugged a lot.Physical size - The drive is remarkably small. I'm used to dealing with SSDs (2.5" drives), but for it to also include protection and the SATA/USB board, this drive is small. It's not as small as Western Digital's Passport drives (I compared them side by side, the HGST (Hitachi) is taller), but it is by no means a burden to carry.Design - The drive honestly reminds me of the iPhone 4/4s. It is very plain, has the USB connection on the bottom edge, has a "sandwiched" appearance if viewed from the side, and feels pretty solid. If you shake it, you hear something rattle a little bit, but I don't think that's too terrible, considering it is a traditional spinning disk.Speed - This is my first USB 3.0 device. If you're coming from USB 2.0, this drive will feel BLAZING fast. Copying to/from my SSD takes minutes instead of hours! With one of my old Seagate USB 2.0 hard drives, copying 100gb was a painful task. With this drive, it takes a few minutes. It's great.Reliability - I've only had the hard drive for two weeks, I can't speak for long term reliability. I think it includes a decent warranty, though.Price - Here is another place where this drive accels. I went to my local [@], looking for a 500gb USB powered hard drive. $85 later and I have a Western Digital Passport one. $85 for 500gb! It's a crime! I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't need it that night, but I did, so I had no choice. I go home, check B&H, and, lo and behold, a 500gb drive for cheaper. Well, that's a no-brainer. Ordered this from B&H, returned the WD to [@]. No regrets.Space - 500gb is 500gb. I needed 500gb, I bought 500gb, I expected 500gb, I got 500gb. If you need more space, then, obviously, don't get a "small" drive.Would I recommend this drive? Yes, wholeheartedly. It's blazing fast, it's cheap, it's plenty big for my uses, it's compact, I love it.

Hitachi has completely botched this product.

It has three defects known to be present in external hard drives.

      1) Dismounts itself in the middle of write and becomes invisible to OS

      2) May not stop spinning for days when not in use

      3) May disapper from the OS after a few hours of no use

In addition, the body does not have rubber feet and for this reason would easily slide on the table.

I am angry and feel cheated.

I used this once so far and it was fine. It started quickly and opened a window for transfer from my Dell XPS. USB was fast, I guess but I have little to compare it with. Faster than USB 2. I also use eSATA but my new computer (1year) doesn't have an outlet like the old XPS. The cable was tight fitting so I'll just leave it in and it was quite short but I don't care - yet.

On my recent trip to New York City I realized after arrivial that I left my backup external drive at home. When I go on trips I take an external drive with me so in case the worst happens to my laptop's drive I don't lose my pictures. I decided to pick up a backup drive so I would have one in case something happened to my laptop while I was in town. The price was right, and the capacity was also right for my particular need. The drive worked very well with my MacBook, it was quick to write all the files to disk, especially given that I shoot in RAW and already had several hundred pictures by then. I would definetly recommend the drive to others looking for an external drive.

Small and works well. I have had no problems with drive and it doesn't need an outlet to power. This is a great product.

I can't believe how small this is and it holds 500GB!

Amazing speed with USB 3.0. I copied a bunch of videos and got almost 100MB/sec.

                                        Would highlighly recommend this drive.

I bought this to back up my MacBook air with Time Machine. It does everything I need it to do. The plastic exterior does seem a little cheap.

For a small price, I can carry all my files with me and never worry about needing any digital information.

I bought this for my wife. She transfers up to 1 Gb files for work. I had bought her a Hitachi USB drive that had to be plugged into power. She was using it and someone tripped on the power cord and knocked it to the floor. It ruined the drive and the usb connector on the unit. This is great because it has no power cord. It is also USB3 ready for her new computer.
