The Sunpak 622 Super Pro has a higher guide number than the AB800. I guess the Metz 76 MZ-5 is the only 'potato masher' w/ more light output, but for 4-5x the price, so this amazing flash is absolutely the best value. I think it's great for just about anything, but ETTL on digital bodies. The 1/128 power setting is sweet.

It can easily overpower indoor ambient light (don't you love those halogens). Bounces from far away surfaces... Outdoors w/ a camera mounted on the supplied bracket and w/ the built-in battery pack is actually great to walk around and it works perfectly in auto mode. Manually zooming the head is easy.
I am also using it w/ the Softliter 46" & 60" umbrellas and w/ the Westcott Apollo 26" softbox for full body & portraits.

The concept of interchangeable heads is brilliant - I bought two bare bulb heads for bouncing indoors.
I wish other heads are available as well esp. the ring light.
The build quiality is good, the thing is massive compared to speedlights, but still nothing compared to monoblocks. With two or more of these one would need a dedicated lighting kit bag, but one unit still fits in a shoulder bag along w/ a couple of lenses and camera bodies.

I am using the Quantum turbo SC (w/ CS6 cable) when I need fast recycling and the AD-26 when there is a powerpoint. I found that recycle is faster from the Quantum battery pack than from the wall (?)

They are triggered w/ pocketwizards or Sonia optical slaves (flashzebra). The Crane MB-4 is not a necessary accessory, but it does the job.
I only own the units for a month, so there is still a lot to learn, but so far I'm very happy.
Cons: you can go blind on full power.
    Enjoy,

Wish the company would make the heads for these again, but alas... Used this flash with the white head (almost bare bulb) and it provides bounce and direct great. You can with the zoom head make dark paper smoke at close range. Yes it is that powerful!! It will cover flash an person at 100ft.

Comments about Sunpak 622 Super Pro TTL Flash (w/o Head):

This was the brightest fully self-contained hand-held flash in its day, and still may be, guide number 200. I'm addicted to bounce flash and invested in one of these about 1994. It would and will light up a room and give great bounce flash results at mid-range F-Stops at ISO-400. I can't tell you how many beautiful bounce flash photos I've taken through the years. Actually replaced it when it died a couple of years ago.

It is extra-bulky and so heavy that I know a fellow that wouldn't use it for that reason alone. But it's OK if you're large-boned and fit.

Alas, technology has overtaken it and the new cameras with ISO-1600-3200-6400 are rendering large flashes mostly obsolete. Except that high-ISO cameras NOW enable bounce flash with the 622 in really large rooms. I used it just the other night at an event with ISO-1600 & 3200 and got GREAT results...as usual. ;) I expect to use my current one for years to come until it becomes totally obsolete.

It's now discontinued by Sunpak and it's sad to hear you can no longer get the head, so that newcomers can't get one anymore.

There's a ship these days called the "Mighty Servant" that they use to transport really-really large things. Farewell to the Mighty Servant of photography, the Sunpak 622 Super Pro.

Comments about Sunpak 622 Super Pro TTL Flash (w/o Head):

I've primarily used this flash "off-camera" on a light stand or tripod at weddings and other events. It provides the powerful flash for most of my lighting needs. The price for this flash is very reasonable when compared to the QFlash product line.

The only thing is that the handle grips aren't glued on very well....some of the edges aren't glued down very well.

Comments about Sunpak 622 Super Pro TTL Flash (w/o Head):

My first 622 flash I own was bought used and I had no idea how old or how much it had been used.
It worked great. I was taking rodeo photographs from inside the arena and it held up to MUCH ABUSE for several years then went out after approx. 7-years of various types of use. My second 622 flash has been used on numerous weddings and many various types of photo shoots using several head types. After approx. 18-years it had it's first malfunction but it still works on full flash power only. I have not tried to have it repaired YET and just bought another one knowing that all my various heads and accessories would fit the new flash. The purchase of the appropriate dedicated module is all you need to use on any other camera. I have been through several different camera models in the past 25 years, all using the same flash. It worked great with all of them. I plan to use it with my next camera that I am about to purchase.

Able to flash at long range makes this product great. For closer in use, high power allows stop down for good depth when you have a wide focal range to catch. If your bored, you can find a glossy black magazine page and make it smoke under full power.
