Comments about Maglite XL100 LED Flashlight (Gray):

I've had older maglites of various sizes for many years, so when I decided I wanted an LED light that would last longer, maglite was the first brand that came to mind. My main purpose for this flashlight was in case I stay out photographing late and need a light to make it back to my vehicle. I wanted a low power mode that would last. High power is very bright, while low power is good enough to avoid tripping in the dark, or see inside a bag. I think the low power is nearly as bright as my old classic on/off non-LED minimag, but should last much longer. I have not tested battery life personally yet. The beam is well-distributed.

The caveat for this flashlight is it isn't intuitive to use. Changing modes requires holding the flashlight in a certain way while you turn it on. I have never needed to read instructions to operate a flashlight until I bought this one. However, the instructions are clear enough and use is simple once you know what to do. Odds are, I won't use any of the modes beyond high and low power.

I like the fact that I can use it one-handed, and have it default to low power mode.

It is compact (1" x 5"), lightweight, well-made, uses 3 AAA batteries, and solid enough that I won't worry about breaking it.
