It features beam angles of 80 x 80°, 100 x 100° and 120 x 120° via GN / guide numbers 32, 24 and 20, respectively. The strobe is equipped with 3 TTL circuitries: DS-TTL II, Slave TTL, and conventional Nikonos type. Powered by 4x AA batteries, the YS-D1 has a recycle time of 1.9 sec with Ni-MH batteries. It has DS-TTL II exposure compensation of (EV): + / - 4 steps. It offers manual exposure control in 11 steps. The strobe boasts an impressive depth rating of 330' (100 m).

On the intuitive YS-D1, Slave On / Off happens automatically, without a switch. There's a ratcheting light level control, as well as a 3-color LED indication lamp: Ready lamp (red), TTL confirmation lamp (green), and Slave TTL mode lamp (blue). The strobe also has an LED target light.

The D1 features an over-pressure relief valve, an Auto power OFF function, and a pre-flash cancellation mode. It produces a color temperature of 5600 K without a diffuser, or 5250 K with a diffuser. A diffuser 120 and a diffuser 100 are included with the strobe. The D1 is compatible with 5-pin sync cords or N and fiber-optic cables (L-type).

Consumer-friendly, the strobe is compatible with the majority of digital cameras. It comes with both a conventional YS adapter mount and a ball joint mount, so you can use whichever one you prefer.

Examples of compatible systems for this strobe include the PT-048 underwater housing for the Olympus TOUGH-8010; the Sea & Sea DX-GE5 compact digital camera and housing set; the DMW-MCFT3 marine case for the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FT3; the WP-FXF200 housing for the Fujifilm FinePix F200 EXR; the WP-DC34 marine case for the Canon Power Shot G11; the PT-050 housing for the Olympus XZ-1; the MDX-D7000 housing for the Nikon D7000; and the RDX-600D housing for the Canon EOS Rebel T3i / 600D / Kiss X5.

Comments about Sea & Sea YS-D1 Strobe:

I have been diving these strobes for two years with no problems. They are one of the brightest available. Using Panasonic Eneloop batteries, I can typically do three or four dives (250-300 photos). I have used them for more than 200 dives. I also have the YS-250s, which seem to throw the light farther, but I only use these now for big animal or professional shoots where recycle time and spread/throw are paramount. The YS-D1s are compact, lightweight powerhouses. Pair them with Eneloop batteries, and you can't beat them!

Comments about Sea & Sea YS-D1 Strobe:

I bought the YS-D1 to replace my YS-110a that stop working after I flooded it... I really like my new strobe. It is in fact more powerful than the YS-110a for a smaller size and weight.
I use it in pair with a YS-01.

Comments about Sea & Sea YS-D1 Strobe:

This is my 2nd YS-D1 - I flooded the predecessor and just rinsed it out and it worked for over a year until I lost it. I liked it so much I bought a 2nd to replace it. Great controls and very bright.

A word of caution, if you use one of the "snappable" flex arms to hold your strobe, and they are very convenient, you should tether the strobe separately - I got tangled up in the anchor line, and my initial YS-D1 is now somewhere in the St Lawrence seaway.

I used this flash at a digital shootout and really like it and found it very easy to use. It worked well with Olympus EP-L3 underwater set-up and gave me so much more range of lighting options than my UFL-2 flash.

Comments about Sea & Sea YS-D1 Strobe:

My husband and I both do underwater photography. He has a canon 7d and I have a 5d mark3. His underwater housing is ikelite with strobes, mine is nauticam with sea and sea strobes. The only thing I can say is good about the sea and sea is its small and portable. The first problem was battery life. It takes 4 AA"s and they won't last through one dive. I researched batteries, and eneloop rechargeables were rated consistently superior for most number of flashes even over non rechargeables. They are what I use in my 600 EXrt. and they are what I used first day with these strobes. The performance was so poor I spent 36.00 to buy a12 pack of energizers but they faired even worse. When I complained, my husband thought it was me and we traded cameras for one dive. I didn't want to trade back, and he wanted his camera back. The light output is much less than the ikelite strobe, both without diffusers. He agreed that the strobe either had something wrong with it, or it just performs poorly. Something that shouldn't be said about a 700.00 item. Also, with my settup, you cannot get TTL, even though the strobe itself can utilize wired and optical TTL, the circuitry doesn't exist. Rather pointless IMHO. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't buy this stobe.

These strobes produce a great deal of light (similar to the 250 without the diffusers). Comes with everything you need to connect to your light arm(s). Very excited to be shooting with 2 of these bad boys now.
