Comments about Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO Macro EX DG OS HSM Lens (for Nikon):

I'm a Nikon shooter and have always been a bit picky with my lenses. I've used only Nikon glass both fast primes and fast zooms. I've used the 105mm 2.8 macro for several years with great results but often want a little more reach. I've been hoping for a reboot of Nikon's 200mm macro lens as I'm hesitant to spend that much on a 20 year old lens with no VR. Tired of waiting and tempted by numerous excellent on-line reviews of this Sigma 180mm macro I decided to take the plunge. I've been nothing but impressed. The sharpness on my D800 is comparable to all my high end Nikon glass. The autofocus is extremely quick and accurate and works fairly well even at 1:1. I find I don't use manual focus any where near as often as on the Nikon 105mm macro. The optical stabilization is outstanding and greatly helps with hand holding when you're not able to use a tripod. The only negative is that the front element is so large(86mm) that ring flashes and Nikon's own macro flash system won't fit. Guess I'll have to spend more money on Really Right Stuff macro adapters. Overall this is a great lens and may make me a little more open to "off brand" lenses in the future.

Comments about Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO Macro EX DG OS HSM Lens (for Nikon):

I use this lens on a D800 mainly for macro photography - anything small that catches my eye. In this discipline the lens' auto focus is not really an asset - actually, I'd almost have to call it a liability as it tends to continue hunting after initially (quickly) locking onto something. You'll want to turn it off for better control in macro mode. Most macro photographers do this routinely with any lens they use.
The OS is definitely an asset in any situation lacking a tripod - either in macro or in regular telephoto mode. I was looking for a long macro lens (for the increased working distance) and after trying the aged but optically amazing Micro Nikkor 200mm f/4.0D ED-IF, the Sigma's excellent image stabilization gave it the edge. Using a tripod, both can deliver outstanding results - but I know I will not always have one with me and most "Kodak moments" will not wait for me to go get one.
The Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO Macro EX DG OS HSM is also a very capable "regular" telephoto lens - fast (f-stop & auto focus), tack sharp corner-to-corner and a very pleasing bokeh. I would not however have purchased it only as such as I prefer the added flexibility offered by a zoom lens.
Bottom line - if you're looking for a long macro lens then this one is a VERY compelling offer. If I dropped mine in the ocean today I would buy it again tomorrow.

Comments about Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO Macro EX DG OS HSM Lens (for Nikon):

Sigma seems to have broken the code on superb macro lenses that are also superior telephoto lenses (most aren't). This 180/2.8 macro is every bit as good as the 150/2.8 and, like the 150, is an excellent telephoto even with the 1.4 teleconverter. Big, pricy, but well worth a look if you need a lens with these capabilities.

Comments about Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO Macro EX DG OS HSM Lens (for Nikon):

Sigma seems to have really done a nice job with this. When they say APO I think they mean it!this far outperforms my Nikon 105 in the areas of contrast and color fringing plus the 180mm gives you much more releif at 1:1. The background out of focus is also very pleasing on this lens even close up ( not busy at all ) so much so that I dont seem to want to take it off of my D700.Sigma has put a very nice finish on this lens and thankfully so as I was not a fan of their old finishes. This lens is big so be prepaired! if you don't want a big lens get the 150mm instead as it's very similar and much smaller and cheaper.
