Recording at 60p is as sharp, clear and smooth as anyone could ask for. Additionally, if conformed to 30p in a suitable NLE (Premiere Pro 5 or above, for example), it produces awesome 50% slow motion, limited only by the space on your recording medium (which is good, because Smooth Slow Record in this camera is terrible - very low rez, 3 sec max).
Active Steady Shot is excellent for pretty much any kind of extreme sports. Footage from cars, motorcycles and bikes is considerably smoother than any other camera on the market. Additionally, you can walk quickly, and with a little practice, even run, and still get smooth footage reminiscent of a Steadycam Merlin. Since this gyroscopic movement of the entire optical block is first generation technology, there seems to be some areas that could be tweaked in the future, specifically some motion artifacts as the gyro overshoots the amount that needs to be corrected. This can appear as mild sway of the video image under some shooting conditions where you would expect no motion at all. Unfortunately, history teaches us that even though this could probably be corrected in a firmware update, Sony simply does not release firmware updates for consumer products.
The camera shoots 1080 high definition in 60p, 60i and 24p frame rates. There is NO 30p, a questionable decision, considering the stratospheric price of this camera, and that 24p is obviously added to create appeal for amateur film makers, who will also likely be in need of 30p as well.
As usual, and inexplicably at this stratospheric price range (wait, didn't I say that already?) there is NO FULL MANUAL mode. You can force a shutter speed, but the camera will adjust aperture and gain automatically. You can force an aperture, but the camera will then adjust shutter & gain automatically. You CAN set an upper limit from 0db to 21db for the auto gain. Also, when you lock the shutter or aperture, you CAN still use the AE shift to do some exposure compensation. How problematic the lack of full manual is will depend on your specific needs. With this camera, I find it to be a non-issue because the auto exposure is excellent, and with the quick control dial on the front set to either exposure, or AE shift, you can quickly and easily override any bad exposure decisions the camera makes. To illustrate this a bit better, the NX70U, a splash-proof, supposedly "professional" version of last year's CX700V, has a full manual mode, BUT it does not have any way to quickly over-ride bad exposure decisions when running in auto mode, so it is actually a lot LESS convenient, and you are much more likely to lose your shot with the NX70. Nowhere is this more problematic than when following some action, and the scene suddenly becomes heavily backlit. Even though the CX760V does not have full manual, in this situation, you just tweak the exposure smoothly with the quick dial, and your footage comes out great. The NX70U – no so much!
The camera does not have a histogram (inexplicable on a camera in this stratospheric price range), but fortunately it DOES have zebras, so you can turn those on, and get a pretty good, if not perfect idea of where your exposure stands. It also does NOT have constant on screen indicators for shutter, aperture and gain – to find out what the camera chose, you have to play back the clip with data code set to camera data.
The camera comes with a nice dual LED video light built in (5400K, measured), however if you are working with people, doing interviews for example, you will absolutely have to put a frosted gel over the LEDs, or you'll have people yelling at you to turn the dang light off - because the LEDs are blindingly intense and focused. They literally leave you seeing stars for 5 minutes if you look into them from a standard interview distance. A couple layers of Roscolux diffusion gel gaffer taped over the light hole in the lens hood provides the perfect amount of diffusion. But c'mon Sony, how hard would it have been to have a built in flip out diffuser on the light to begin with (at this stratospheric price level)?
The camera has 96GB of built in memory, basically, the capacity of a laptop hard drive just a few years ago. But the only way to access this memory is via USB 2.0, which allows you to extract your videos at a leisurely 10-11MB/sec. To put this in perspective, if you fill up the internal memory, it will take you over TWO HOURS to download it all to your computer. A much smarter option if you are in a hurry is to get a USB3.0 card reader, and use UHS-1 SDHC memory cards. Using USB 3.0 and high speed memory cards, you can offload a similar amount of data in a much more reasonable 15 minutes. The bottom line, if you are in no rush, then I guess all that internal memory is great, but if you are on a tight deadline, it's useless.
The camera has a lot of idiotic "fluff" on it – internal "editing" capability, a mode that inserts random transitions and music into your videos when you play them back, stuff like that. Pretty useless, even for a consumer oriented product.
There is a lot to like about this little camera, but as usual, Sony doesn't deliver a game over dominator in it's class, despite the very high price tag. It suits my needs as an action cam, and a B roll cam extremely well due to the steady-cam like stabilization, however if your stabilization requirements are not so extreme, competing products may offer more bang for the buck. Only 3 stars because it is missing features that competing top of the line camcorders offer, usually at slightly lower price points. If the price was lower, I would give it another star.

Comments about Sony HDR-CX760V High Definition Handycam Camcorder (Black):
Over all this is a good camcorder. Steady shot is what puts this handycam on top. Even when you zoom in it is stable video. On other camcorders I have used there would be no point to fully zoom in because the video would be so unstable. On a clear day (sunny sky)is when you can see how great the video can be on the cx760v. That would be the same for pictures, it will take some great pictures but is does take them time to process when takeing the picture.(5 sec) Night footage is also great on this camcorder. Auto focus is great on this cam. Also there are alot of options on this cam and gives a good amount of flexabilty. This is what sony can do better and the reason for 4 stars. When in the menu and you want to change a few settings it takes a bit of time because it always starts back maen menu. There for you have to choose again scroll down all the options again. If it was to keep you in the same point of menu after you choose an option that would make it so much more user friendly. Slow motion video is not great. On the sony touch screen you may have to press a few times for the cam to react not a big deal but you will notice it.On the LED screen the picture looks so great but when you get on a 47" led 1080 TV you will see it is not as great its still good not great. Some say this cam is a bit heavy thats OK with me. If its a better build and makes steady shot so great. This is a solid built camcorder and not just plastic which is great and if that adds a bit of weight so be it. It seems the bottom plate is steel and that is great when you want to mount it. Over all I think this is the top camcorder in its class and I am happy with cx760v I can say its a really great handycam and Sony has been stepping up there game. You hear more and more about the quality of picture from the sony cams in the last year.

The image quality is impressive for this type of camera. The thing I like most about this camera is the ability to shoot 1080/60p. The most stunning thing about the camera is the steady shot. You can see the lens float in space; shake is all but eliminated. The results are stunning. This is the only camcorder I have seen where you can use the zoom while shooting hand-held.
The still photos cannot be taken when shooting 60p. The still images are not the best quality. There is also no histogram capability.
Battery life is not great. You get about an hour of full time shooting with the included battery.
The on/off switch is awkward. I prefer a solid locking switch rather than a small push button combined with auto-on features.
Focus can be difficult because of the high resolution.

Comments about Sony HDR-CX760V High Definition Handycam Camcorder (Black):
I purchased this camera as a companion to my HDR-CX700V camera. My review is a comparison of the two cameras. While this camera has very good video qualities, it falls short of its CX700V predecessor: worse auto white balance, worse low light performance. When the camera is placed on a tripod with image stabilization set to any of its three settings, the lower picture quality of the CX760V is noticeable,. This is a major disappointment because I take most of my video from a tripod and lower video quality is the primary reason for my 2 star reduction.
Note: I tried using the Adobe Premiere CS6 Warp Stabilizer Effect on the CX760V video taken with the camera on a tripod and the result was to make the CX760V video look similar to the CX700V picture quality. But that is an extremely slow step to add to a workflow.
Hand held image stabilization of the CX760V may be slightly better than the CX700V, but I had a difficult time telling much difference in my testing.
Lens hood on CX760V is junk. Accessory cover is a fragile plastic design that can easily be broken.
Comparing still photography, the CX760V is far superior to the CX700V. Low light still photos are far superior in both in resolution and color. Daylight photos are far superior in resolution.
In my testing, the USB data transfer rate of the CX760V was about 2.7X the transfer rate of the HDR-CX700V (9.2MB/s vs. 3.4MB/s).
I am still extremely happy with my HDR-CX700V. I still rate it 5 stars.
I would not recommend this camera to anyone who primarily shoots from a tripod.

I own 2 similar cameras... The hdr-560v and this one, which is kind of it's newer brother... I love both of them. This camera offers quite the punch as far as features and picture quality. I am a wedding and events videographer, and use this camera as a secondary camera at ALL of my events... Don't be fooled by it's small size... It can do just about everything my Sony Ax-2000 pro-sumer camera can do, minus just a few of the manual freedoms, but not ALL... This does have some manual control PLUS has the Peaking and Zebra features... I shoot in 60i (which is basically 30p or 29.97fps) Meaning you can slow motion it down 50% and still get great clear video... Grant it, I wish half of the features did not exist, like the ones I do not need, but you would have to make it yourself to own such a product... The one gripe I have, is that I do not like the flimsy hot shoe cover that flaps over, instead of sliding internally like the 560v... All in All it's great! It's a bit pricey, but I would not have bought another one if I didn't absolutely love it! >>> Buy this if you want reliable quality video.

So I recieved the Sony CX760v and went out and starting shooting with this camcorder immediately. It was really nice to have the 96Gb of memory onboard and it took bueatiful recordings. However, I got this particular camera both for the image stabilization, wide agnle, and payed extra for the viewfinder. The reason for the viewfinder was so I could use the camcorder outdoors on bright sunny days, but this viewfinder is so small and the eye piece does not cup around the eye and letting in to much light, and renders the viefinder useless. Returned this Camcorder to B & H and ordered the CX710v for about [$] cheaper. You can see the LCD in bright sunlight.

The camera takes very good pictures. It has a lot of things to learn. I realized that it could shoot a still picture while still in the video mode. Just had to stop videoing in High Res.
I did not have to go to Still mode to shoot a still. I assume I was shooting with video exoisyre settings

I've had a few weeks to try this camcorder and have been very impressed with it. It is amazing what's packed into this little box. Generally image quality is great, and I was pleasently surprised by how good the stills were. The supersteadyshot is great, and almost as good as a steadycam. I wish I had a longer zoom but its not bad, I might get the telephoto adaptor, but so far its fine. On the post production side, Sony Vegas Platinum Studio makes editing the HD video with 5.1 surround sound the best. I tried some other software and found it unable to easily edit the sound. I would recommend this for moderate to advanced shooters. It has a bit too much just for casual shooters.

I shoot for a living, most of my gear fly's on my Octocopter to include the 5D Mark II, RED Epic and several others. This camera shoots in 24p which is great for a consumer level camera, but the built in stability almost makes post production stabilizing obsolete. If you walk normally, it is every bit as stable has using a merlin steadycam. I actually got giddy watching the footage from sheer disbelief. This camera is perfect for chasing your kids around the backyard, or for getting stable dolly type shots on a pro shoot in tight spaces. The 96 hours of footage on the internal HD is brilliant and the battery lasted me about 3 hours of continuous use. Not a perfect 5 because the weight is was high considering the small size, but that is most likely due to the stability system, well worth it. It is not heavy by any means, but flying on an RC chopper, every ounce is critical.
You will love what this camera can do.

Comments about Sony HDR-CX760V High Definition Handycam Camcorder (Black):
I am a professional filmmaker and needed a small camera to augment my Sony XDCAM EX-1. To my shock, the CX760V compaires extremely favorably to the professional level, EX-1! The color and image sharpness is very close to the EX-1, and footage from this camera intercuts beautifully with the more expensive camera. The balanced Steadi Shot is superb, giving you ALMOST a steadicam effect. I have done a 16 minute take, following my subject into and out of rooms, down hallways, etc. The footage is almost as smooth as a steadicam, but it was handheld. And finally, you can zoom in to a full 10x optical zoom handheld.....and it ALMOST looks like a tripod shot. I've shown this camera to other pro filmmakers and they are astounded with 1) the image quality and 2) the ability to handhold a camera and get such smooth footage.

"My Button" feature is handy! It's currently set to display Steady Shot, Low Lux and Microphone Reference Level. (Most frequently used/changed settings when recording live music concerts.) Balanced Optical Steady Shot in Active Mode is a major disappointment. Image stabilization seems to over-compensate, correcting for motion even when there isn't any, causing videos to seemingly flicker and flutter when played back. It's also bulkier and heavier, which is hardly an improvement. This model's also dispensed with the sliding Active Accessory Door, replacing it with a somewhat fragile, flimsy hinged cover. Hope it holds up.

I use the camera to record game from deer stands, and the lens stabalization system is awesome for keeping a steady shot while zoomed in fully. The only problem I've had is getting a Varizoom remote controller to work with a lanc/av adapter cable.

Great little (gyro eye-ball) camera that smooths out the vibration and bumps and shakes to an almost steady-cam like image. I bought it for our UAV Drone use, but I can see that this camera has many applications that will be improved with it's use! This new mini technology has taken Zoom shots (without a tripod), to a new level ! also, the Night vision shots, and Macro Zoom are quite amazing too ! Amazing Camera with so much cutting edge technology packed into such a small well made little package!

This is my fifth Sony Camcorder over the past 20 years and by far the 760V is the best. I love the colour, the stabization, the sound quality, the menus. I take the clips and put them onto a Mac to edit in Final Cut Pro X and it all works great. The stills are excellent as well if you don't want to lug around a heavy SLR camera.
