The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 Digital Camera (Black) has a 20x super zoom Leica lens that ranges from an ultra wide-angle 24mm (35mm equivalent) to an extremely long 480mm (35mm equivalent) telephoto lens. There's a high resolution 14.1MP MOS sensor, full 1920 x 1080 60p high definition video with Dolby stereo sound, and focusing as fast as 0.1 second.
POWER O.I.S. image stabilization helps keep your images sharp and clear, even shooting in dim light, taking extreme close-up macro shots, or using the longest telephoto setting. There's also an Active Mode stabilization that helps to keep your videos from jumping around when you're moving while shooting. The Venus Engine processor and Intelligent Noise Reduction System deliver superb image quality. A host of creative functions and modes like Intelligent HDR (High Dynamic Range), Panorama Shot, burst shooting of 10 frames per second at full 14.1MP resolution, and multiple color modes will help you make every photo and every video you create an inspiration.
There's also built-in GPS for geo-tagging your pictures, and displaying the location from any of the more than 1,000,000 landmarks included. Intelligent ISO control/motion detection, AF tracking for moving subjects, and touch-screen operation of focus, exposure, AF tracking, zoom, and manual operation make this one of the easiest cameras to use available today. A 3D photo mode lets you explore the 3D world with your photos and the Handheld Night Shot mode allows you to take gorgeous photos at night without a tripod. The large, bright 3" 460K-dot LCD makes composing and viewing your images a treat.
All of this comes in a compact package that measures just 4.1 x 2.3 x 1.1" and weighs only 6.49 oz.

I've been waiting for the latest to upgrade from my Lumix ZR3 and I found it.
Picture quality is at least as good as from the ZR3 which is pretty darn good for a pocket camera. Most impressive, aside from the 24mm to 480mm zoom is the burst speed. It just captures anything that moves including my dog in full flight. Everything is much faster. Autofocus is nearly instant. HD movie is of fantastic quality and with stereo sound. Menus are easy to navigate, even without my reading glasses. The zoom works very quiet and smooth and the camera has a nice grip and feel.
Getting back to picture quality, it is as good as I would expect from a camera this size. I also took the Canon S100 home and have decided that the slightly better IQ is not worth missing out on all the extra features that this ZS20 has, including faster focus, faster burst speed and of course the 20x zoom. Much to my own surprise, it's the Canon that has to go back.

After extensive IQ testing of a ZS20 unit and comparison with my ZS7 it became obvious the ZS20 I got suffered from a rather large area of the image (about 25% in lower right quadrant) being out of focus. The excessive noise and randomly blotchy areas can be seen at 100X in photos taken even at 100ISO at different focal lengths and are quite unsettling. At higher ISOs (above 400) the noise is annoyingly distinct. The color rendition though as well as the HDR function are excellent. The slow motion, 3D and panoramic modes render images of somewhat disappointingly low resolution although are quite impressive and entertaining (and can be useful). The extreme zoom function is remarkable in itself thanks to the outstanding OIS, though hardly useful for anything but amazement and curiosity.
The video function is outstanding!
Hope these deficiencies are only found in that single unit I got and will be absent in the next one I ordered as replacement.

I wanted to buy the latest model of this which is the Lumix ZS30, but upon reading the reviews from different websites, I decided to purchase this Panasonic Lumix ZS20, not because the ZS30 could not meet my needs but for simple reason that this is cheaper. The picture quality in low light is what I like most and likewise the video quality. This camera will not disappoint anyone interested in taking family pictures.

Although this camera is not a DSLR it still has a lot to recommend it. I haven't tried everything it can do but have taken a few hundred photos with it in a variety of settings, lighting conditions, locations, etc. and find that in general it performs well. For me so far the best features are good telephoto and close up capabilities, a nice variety of manual settings and options, generally good photo clarity, and a quick acting shutter. The primary things I would like to see improved are a faster method of accessing all the settings (it seems to require scrolling through a lot of menu items to get where you want to be, and to require that you go through them all again for every shot even if you want to make only a slight change between photos), occasional shots which don't seem to be as sharp as anticipated, and a flash which seems sometimes to be very sharp and have a good range but other times when it doesn't. It's low light non-flash performance also seems to vary from excellent to so-so. I haven't listed all of its merits in the interest of brevity--and there are many--so I'll conclude with this thought: I explored many similar cameras and decided on this one. Overall it's a good small camera for use as a backup when I don't feel like carrying my DSLR.

Having so much fun with this camera shooting panoramas, action, close ups...just for fun! I also have a dslr but with the convenience of this one, I'm afraid my other may sit a while (except when shooting macro...as you cannot get close enough with this one). Fits into my pocket or purse. Zooms to 420 and shoots wide at 24 (landscapes are a dream!) and thankfully, has anti-shake! The LCD is large but in sunshine, it is very difficult to see.
My biggest complaint is that the included software does not work on a mac! Also, you must download the manual...the hardcopy only gives info about setup. Also, to recharge the battery, you must plug in the camera; in other words, there is no external battery charger.

Comments about Lumix DMC-ZS20 Digital Camera (Black):
I bought the ZS20 to replace an aging Canon pocket camera. I chose the ZS20 specifically for the GPS features as I had previously been using an external GPS tracker to geotag my images. How disappointed am I, then, that the primary feature I bought it for doesn't work? Extremely.
I don't know what is more infuriating: that the camera can't find locations, OR that it tags images with the WRONG location.
I setup the camera at home (Salt Lake City) and took some photos and found the GPS tags were correct. Then I took the camera down the road a mile or so and took some more photos but the camera still tagged them with my home address...a mile away. It seems to want to tag the photos with the last known location if it can't find current coordinates, which is a useless feature (tagging incorrectly).
I've been in Mexico for a week now and have literally had the camera on (acquiring gps) for HOURS but it won't find my current location. The camera keeps displaying the "repositioning" status indicating that it is looking for current gps coordinates but never finds them. Wide open spaces & parks without obstructions (ie, not blocked by buildings) don't even do the trick.
I loaded up the SD card with the map data (provided on DVD with the camera) before coming on this trip so I know that's not the problem.
One good thing about the camera is that the gps stays on for a while even after turning the camera off (trying to find a position) so the battery drains quickly. So even though my photos don't have correct gps coordinates, at least the battery doesn't last very long.
Overall I'm hugely disappointed that the number one reason for choosing this camera (gps) doesn't work. I suggest choosing a different product unless you like short battery life and features that don't work properly.

I bought this during a one-hour consultation with B&H--got great help in choosing it. I was going on a trip down the Amazon on short notice--just got back. The SCN function was very useful. I could take photos through glass, action shots of birds, panoramas, scenery on the river at night, portraits of villagers, etc, etc.
Luckily I had help early in the trip about using it; the expedition leader said it was a very advanced camera. I was surprised I could capture a bird taking off from a branch at such a distance.
I held it in one hand in the skiff as we went up and down the river. Very portable, very sophisticated instrument. Love it.
