Tough Design

Tough Body with Rugged Design
The DMC-TS4 is shockproof, waterproof, dustproof and freezeproof in design. Swim along with tropical fish and capture shots of beautiful coral reefs, or take recordings of your friends around a camp fire. The DMC-TS4 is an extremely versatile camera that you can take with you wherever the action calls.
Waterproof
With waterproof performance to a depth of 39.37' (12 m), equivalent to the "IPX8" and "IP6X" standard, the DMC-TS4 supports active shooting on a beach, underwater or in a pool. If the camera gets dirty, soil and dust can be washed off by using water.
Shockproof
The DMC-TS4 is shockproof, even when dropped from a height of up to 6.5' (2m). It lets you shoot actively while moving around, even with the camera in one hand.
Dustproof
The DMC-TS4 is dustproof equivalent to the "IPX8" and "IP6X" standard. While hiking or playing sports, fine dust particles can enter through gaps in the camera body and cause malfunction. The DMC-TS4 can be used in these activities without problems.
Freezeproof
Freezeproof to 14°F (-10°C), the DMC-TS4 supports shooting while skiing, snowboarding or skating.
Quad Indicator
The DMC-TS4 is specially designed for active outdoor use. It adopts GPS, compass, altimeter and even barometer to show and record altitude, barometric pressure and orientation data. The barometer also works for indicator for depth underwater.
Altimeter Log
The altitude gains higher accuracy by using GPS data with DMC-TS4. The barometric trend is available which helps users to forecast the climate and the log of altimeter log tells how high he/she was.
GPS Function
The LUMIX GPS displays not only latitude and longitude, but also the area information that covers 203 countries or regions and the landmark information of over 1,000,000 locations in 82 countries or regions. The DMC-TS4 shows the name of the Country/Region, State/Prov./County, County/Township, City/Town/Village and Landmark using the internal data to give users real-time information of the place when taking photos. The photos and movies with the location names are automatically sorted in the virtual folder alphabetically in the camera allowing quick reach. These geo-tagged images can be pinpointed on the maps of social media internet maps to be shared with your friends and families.
My Landmark Function
You can even create your own landmarks with the DMC-TS4 for your home, your family or any place you like. (Max. 50 places).
Easy-to-Set
Simply select "GPS" and shoot, and then information of latitude and longitude is recorded to EXIF data of the photo / video.
Auto Clock Setting
Internal clock of the camera is automatically adjusted to the local time of the place where the camera is, so you do not have to set the clock manually whether you go abroad or come back home.

Shooting Functions

Time Lapse Shot
Once the start time, the interval and the number of pictures to shoot are set, the camera automatically records images. You can leave the camera and get a record of subjects such as flowers coming into bloom, scudding clouds, or wild animals in nature.

Leica DC Lens with Folded Optics Technology
The DMC-TS4 features a high-quality Leica DC Vario-Elmar 28mm wide-angle lens with a 4.6x optical zoom and focal length of 4.9-22.8mm (35mm camera equivalent: 28-128mm; 30-140mm in 35 mm equiv. in video recording)). The optic boasts aperture of f/3.3 - 5.9, 2-step, or f/10-18. The folded optics of shaft guide method is adopted to secure the toughness of the lens unit. This lens unit comprises 10 elements and a prism unit in 8 groups, including an ED lens and 5 aspherical lenses with 6 aspherical surfaces passing Leica's stringent standards to deliver exceptional optical performance to the edges. In addition to reinforcing the exterior of the camera with shock-resistant material, the DMC-TS4 uses folded optics to prevent its lens unit from taking damage when dropped during operation. The lens unit is protected by a supplementary damper to absorb the force from shock impact. All components including the lens unit are reexamined to endure temperatures as low as 14°F, making the DMC-TS4 freezeproof.
28mm Wide-Angle Lens
The 28mm wide-angle lens lets you easily capture large groups of people indoors or expansive architectural structures and scenes with dynamic width and rich perspective, even from short distances.
9.3x Intelligent Zoom

The result is fast and accurate AF performance. In addition, the DMC-TS4 features dramatically speedier focusing that is 28% faster than our previous model. You can quickly focus on moving subjects, such as when you're shooting sports scenes.
Focus Modes
Normal / AF Macro / Macro Zoom, Quick AF On / Off (On in Intelligent Auto), Continuous AF (only for motion picture), AF Tracking
3.7fps in 12.1-Megapixel Full-Resolution
The DMC-TS4 lets you snap off consecutive shots at approx. 3.7 frames per second in full resolution. You can take a series of shots, then choose the one you like the best and delete the rest. You can also select High-speed Burst Mode or Flash Burst Mode from Scene Mode.
Venus Engine
The DMC-TS4's Venus Engine processes large amounts of full HD data at high-speed. At the same time, it facilitates a super-fast response time.
Intelligent Noise Reduction System
The excellent S/N ratio of the CCD sensor with Primary Color Filter and the Intelligent Noise Reduction system in the Venus Engine make both photos and videos shot at any sensitivity from low to high display outstanding clarity.

I made a thorough research before purchasing this camera. I believe that the issues that people looking for this type of camera face is mainly resistance, resources and overall specs. Almost all the tests and reviews I've watched focused mostly on resistance, and all of them definitely shows that the TS4 is the tougher camera among its competitors, there isn't much said or comparison on image quality, ergonomics, ease of use, video mode, etc…

Another doubt that comes to mind is deciding if the TS4 is worth the extra money over the TS3. It's also very hard to tell, I couldn't compare them side by side but after using the TS4 for a while, I went to a store to test a TS3. My impression was not as conclusive as I thought, it really seemed to me that it was much more of a software update than hardware. By just handling and taking a few shots it's very hard to notice difference in image quality or GPS, altimeter, barometer and compass accuracy, only a very thorough analysis should set them apart, but the thing is, as a consumer I expected to be blown out by a newer model and new features. So if you own a TS3 it's definitely not worth the upgrade, but if you're buying it for the first time, like myself, I'd go for the newer version, improved here and there.

Like I said, big big difference noticed was the camera's software. All menus and scene modes were simplified, made cleaner and easier to access. It's very intuitive and almost every item on screen when selected it shows a brief description of what that item is and what it does to your picture/camera.

CONCLUSION: It is definitely a great, compact and TOUGH camera. Since it is made for extreme sports and everything that demands from the camera I really think that it should have only resources for this kind of usage, even more than it already has (ex: in camera HDR processing, different video resolutions and fps) . Getting in to the scene modes and seeing extra icons with not only 1, but 2 Baby modes! Food mode, Pet mode and so on, for me it seems a little useless and gives a "family fun" feeling to a camera designed for sports and adventure. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of great and useful resources such as panorama shot, time lapse, auto bracket, miniature effect, macro zoom, landscape, night photography and so on.

Apart from that, I'm very satisfied with image quality, video is excellent with different compressions and in camera effects. I was very impressed with its speed, you push power button and take a picture in less than 3 seconds, focus is also very fast. Another incredible feature is that the led light used for the camera to focus in low light conditions can also be used as a continuous light in movie mode so you can light up people and objects while shooting videos at night or under waters that aren't very clear.

I'd definitely recommend this camera/model for anyone looking for a waterproof compact.

    Good clicks to you all!

Buyer Beware! Panasonic will not honor their warranty!
I am very distressed that I am forced to post this complaint about Panasonic not honoring their explicit warranty on a Lumix DMC-TS3 "underwater" camera.
I am an experienced underwater photographer with three underwater cameras and 9 years experience. I have never had a case leakage or any damage to one of my cameras. I know how to care for expensive camera equipment at the beach and underwater.
I purchased a new Lumix DMC-TS3 "underwater and 6 foot drop proof" camera for my wife to use. She is also an experienced photographer and knows how to care for a camera. We liked the Lumix as an easy to use light weight simple point and shoot for shallow water snorkeling. One its first trip, only 6 weeks old, it failed after only 7 days of shallow snorkeling. It was never more than 6 feet underwater and at all times cared for exactly according to the manual. It was never dropped or otherwise damaged. I was sorry it failed so soon on its first trip but we did have our larger underwater cameras so I was not too concerned. I was sure Panasonic would replace or repair the camera and I would have been happy with that.
I returned the camera as instructed to Panasonic certain they would honor their warranty and advertising. I was shocked when they called and said the warranty was void because there was "condensation" inside the camera. I carefully explained that the camera was cared for exactly according to their manual and should be under warranty. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told they would contact me in 3-4 working days. They never called or emailed me. I then called Panasonic warranty service two more times. Each time I got the same answer: the warranty was void and someone would call me but no one ever did. I am now left without a camera. I would never buy from Panasonic again and caution anyone else considering a purchase from them. If you do not care about a warranty and possible early camera failure then buy Panasonic, otherwise BEWARE PANASONIC. I have now found numerous other complaints on the web about the exact same treatment from Panasonic. This appears to be a corporate policy and not an isolated incident.

Water proof says it for me, as I use it while kayak fishing. Previously I had Fujifilm XP30 that was supposed to be water proof. It only took a quick dunk in the water to find out I needed a new camera. The TS4 is as advertised, water proof. Pictures a very good for a point & shoot. I reccomend this camera.

I can't speak to its waterproof abilities when submerged, which seems to be the biggest complaint. I took it for a month-long Asia trip and for my needs it did great. Did great in the rain, and knowing that it was shockproof provided ease of mine especially when taking photos while biking or rock climbing. I can't say that I actually dropped it hard though so I can't speak to that either.

Photo and video quality seem pretty good, but I only take photos as a hobby and can't say I have the same eye as everyone else.

Given my experience so far, I'll give it 5 stars. A warning though - I haven't had it go through the ringer yet.

Comments about Lumix DMC-TS4 Digital Camera (Orange):

My wife and I like the outdoors and we do everything from kayaking, hikng, riding motorcycles and ATVs. When we take out our ATV's we go through everything, fresh water, salt water, sand and lots of mud and this is the first camera that I don't have to worry if it got wet or muddy. I don't have to worry about jumping off our ATV and making sure I don't drop the camera into the water and I no longer have to worry about if it's going to rain and having to put the camera in a zip lock bag. The video looks great and when zooming in while taking video it doesn't go from clear to blurry like some other digital cameras do when you try to zoom in while videoing the action. I also like that you do not have to move a switch to go from video to regular camera shots, you just push which button you want at that moment in time and take the shot or the video, not having to make sure which setting you're on to get what you want is great. The first time we came home from mudding I just submerged the camera in clean fresh water for about ten minutes and then shook it off, let it dry and it was good to go for the next trip. This is a great camera for the price and the functions!

Comments about Lumix DMC-TS4 Digital Camera (Orange):

I wanted a waterproof camera to enjoy in the pool, ocean and for activites like paddleboarding and kayaking. I am very pleased with images. It is not a DSLR in housing and I didn't expect it to be. It was lots of fun to take underwater photos in the pool and also not worry about getting it wet during kayaking and paddleboarding.

And I love orange - so I am happy with an orange camera. I bought the TS4 over the TS5 based on price. Both cameras rated as the best underwater camera (TS4 in 2012 and TS5 in 2013).

Recently took a trip to Costa Rico. Used the camera while hiking, white water tubing and snorkling. Image quality good. Underwater pictures very good. Flash is limited and when use of zoom, image quality became a bit blurry. May have to do with unfamiliarity. Construction seems very durable. We bought spare battery, and were glad we did.

Comments about Lumix DMC-TS4 Digital Camera (Orange):

This was a gift to a friend who is reasonably skilled using DSLR cameras. She appreciated the different settings but remarked about the constant reminder to deselect the "camera closure" screen at start-up. Pictures were very good quality. Camera size is a slight issue to qualify it for a pocket camera. Outdoor light reflection was problematic in direct sunlight. LCD is large and easy to read in non-glare settings. Battery life appeared acceptable on first outing. GPS meta data is unique. All-in-all, it is a good piece of camera equipment.

We bought this for an upcoming trip to Hawaii. I tested it a swimming pool and the photos came out great. I did find that the view screen is about useless underwater, you have to literally point and shoot and hope you got the picture you wanted.
This does not change the fact that we like this camera. I won't know how it holds up at depth until later. If necessary I will update this rating then.

We had a different brand waterproof camera years ago but the picture quality was never very good so we stopped using it. We decided it was time to invest in a new camera and could not be happier with the performance of the Lumix. Its a great camera and the price can't be beat.

We use the camera on our boat to take pictures and videos of all the water activities.

Comments about Lumix DMC-TS4 Digital Camera (Orange):

This camera goes rafting and hiking with me where being waterproof and rugged are important. Only had it a few weeks but it has been doing a good job so far. The orange color is great since I tend to lose things unless I have good visual clues.

Comments about Lumix DMC-TS4 Digital Camera (Orange):

Photo-quality wise, the TS4 is roughly equivalent to any other point and shoot. I have been impressed with the dynamic range of the sensor, and highlights that many cameras would blow out are rendered well - so blue skies are indeed usually blue.

There are some usability niggles, but like most other Panasonic point & shoots, it does a great job in auto mode.

Have only tested to depths of a couple of feet so far, but the water resistance seems to be as advertised.

AF is a little slow, but as usual, it really isn't critical with a point & shoot with a sensor like this as everything is usually in focus.

Image stabilization seems solid. Face recognition is very good and reliable, even with our 6-month-old. Shooting is quite responsive as long as you pre-focus.

I haven't yet figured out how to use the LCD underwater - you can't use it from an angle because there is an air gap inside, resulting in total (internal) reflection from an angle when underwater (just like other water-to-air surfaces). Eliminating this would help a great deal.

Finally, the only buttons that are out of place are the zoom buttons. I know that Panasonic can't put dials or wheels on a waterproof camera, but the zoom buttons could be placed better for thumb use.
