First off, this IS NOT a professional grade camcorder, therefore don't think that you will get the quality / low-light results of a professional grade camcorder. There, now that's out of the way... on to the good stuff. For the features, quality of zoom, and reasonable low-light ability of this little camcorder, you CANNOT go wrong on the price-point of this! Again, it's not for professional use, but rather capturing high quality video for the everyday situation. This thing is TINY for what it can do, and is outrageously light and portable. A couple of warnings - to make good use of this camcorder drop in a class 6 SDHC card or better (it of course takes SDXC which provides for excellent storage expansion options). The camcorder does NOT have an internal hard-drive, therefore be prepared to add on some cards for your travels / events. BUT, GB's are so inexpensive these days, so who really cares? Buy a couple of cards to swap in and out from computer to camcorder and you've got an easy production solution! One last things... this camcorder gets some bad ratings, almost exclusively because of the battery life. THAT IS CANON'S FAULT for packaging this camcorder with a battery with a maximum life of about 45 minutes (realistically though, around 25 minutes with constant full HD filming). BUT, what people don't seem to realize is that CANON offers longer battery-life batteries that'll give in the 60+ minutes range at full HD (BP-727)! They are outrageously priced though, in the $150 range ($100 if you find a crazy good deal). That being said, grab yourself a knock-off set of equivalents from BH Photo and you'll be spending around $50 for a 2-pack (including charger). Only issue with the knock-offs is they don't have the chip to talk to your camcorder and you'll lose the ability to check on your battery life (and the CANON camcorder won't charge these either, you'll have to use the supplied knock-off charger). For the savings vs. the ability to check your battery life, it's well worth it.If you're unwilling to buy extra batteries (whether CANON or knock-offs) for this camcorder, then DON'T BUY IT. You will suffer the rage of having inadequate power to have fun with this model. There's lots of better camcorders for more money, but for the lens, IS, etc. you will not regret this purchase (again, with the caveat of buying the extra batteries).

Overall this camera does one heck of a job for the little money put into it. Packed with features at this price point and image quality is fantastic. Would have rated at 4 to 4 1/2 stars except for one problem that would be the same problem for any of these cameras that do not have a view finder. Out in the bright son, regardless of the settings you put into the camera, the object you are trying to shoot can be very difficult to see or even find on the LCD screen. Obviously including a view finder would cause the camera to be slightly larger and compact size is something canon is really going for here and that is a plus but, I do not think I will purchase another video camera without a viewfinder. In all other ways, this camera, at this price, rocks. One other thing worth a mention. Camera does really nice indoors so again at this price point, nice work in lower light however, really wish there was a way to add video light to this camera and there is not. Something you may want to consider before buying.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF R300 Full HD Camcorder:
We are videotaping our church services each week. Using the external microphone input to connect our sound craft audio mixer directly into the camera. I like that the audio is mixed with both the external input and the external cam mic, so we can pick up the choir and congregation. I'm getting used to the touch screen. A little hard to use for zoom, but I'll master it. Lots of settings to teach other users, but sharing helps me retain the knowledge.

I'd been looking into getting a camera for a while. This one perfectly matched my needs. It's small and light; super easy for taking to events and catching the grandkids being adorable. So far, I've just got to test it around the house, but everyone in the family finds it really easy to use. The HDMI hook up is going to come in nice when trying to share video. I'm excited to test it out properly at my daughters college graduation soon!!

I produce an independant music video show. We use this mainly as a secondary camera angle for interviews and occationally for concert footage. It works really well as an inexpensive backup camera. good quality picture if you've got nice bright lighting, especially outdoors. Not as good picture in lower light situations. The on-camera mic surprised me at how good it is. Filmed close to the speakers at a Rock concert and it had better audio than our more expensive camera.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF R300 Full HD Camcorder:
We currently own 40 of these cameras for use in a student check out pool.
This is one of the few cameras at this price point that includes both a microphone input and a headphone output-essential for use with external microphones.
Image quality and low light performance are in line with the price. Not fantastic, but given a well lit environment, it does just fine.
With the large BP-727 battery pack the camera will record continuously for approximately 3 hours. The included factory battery is so small and short lived as to be pretty much useless. A larger battery is a must have.
It records AVCHD H.264 codec files with a .MTS extension. This is usable by -most- video editing software packages capable of seeing solid state media cameras - iMovie, Final Cut X, and Premiere all talk to the camera.
It is also capable of recording MP4 codec files, which Canon characterizes as "ideal for web upload, playback on a computer or smartphone." The MP4 recording time is ONLY 30 minutes. The camera will cease recording once the 30 minute limit is reached. The record button must be pressed again to continue recording. It's confounding that longer MP4s cannot be recorded. AVCHD will record continuously until the memory card fills up or the battery becomes discharged.
I wish the wide angle side of the zoom were wider.
Overall, I recommend these cameras. They perform well, are pretty easy to use once set up (lots of menu items), and offer good features and performance for the price.

It's no good in even moderately low light and the HD mode shows jaggies and artifacts much worse than I expected. I'm a video production teacher at Jamestown High School in Jamestown, NY. I puchased a couple of the VIXIA HF R300 camcorders for my class. I found these camcorders to be very durable to use, especially working with my high school students. My students and I love the touch screen feature. A friend and I have recently got into making short films. This camera is perfect for anyone on a tight budget, but wants the most bang for their buck. The image stabilization is amazing for my mid-20's "arthritic" hands. The battery life is not the best, but lasts long enough to shoot several shots if you put into standby mode in between. Using a Zoom H1 with this camera is perfect! Crystal clear audio quality! I bought this camera as well as a Barska Accu-grip (pistol grip) and I love it! Has the look and feel of a Super8 and really fit my budget as a college student! Thank you B & H!

Although I have worked as a professional photographer for 30 years, I've never had an interest in video other than watching one occasionally. Now that my grandchildren are involved in sports, I decided to record these future Olympic champions.Simplicity in use was the number one issue for me. I don't need yet another gadget that requires a post graduate degree to use it. This camera is about as simple as it gets.I bought this camcorder after seeing it in use by a friend. And I wanted a model that recorded in mp4. Mp4 is almost a universal format that can be viewed by people with either a Mac or PC.With iMovie on Mac or Windows Movie Maker on Windows it is childishly easy to make a DVD that will play in common devices for television, i.e DVD players and Blue Ray players. Software does come with the camera, but I don't like it. Be aware that it only woks on Windows PC anyway. Mp4 makes it possible to upload your video to YouTube, share with friends using a free online storage site or simply burn them to a CD or DVD.The only downside I've seen so far is a lousy battery. You won't get much (20 minutes) from the Canon battery. You can however buy an aftermarket battery that will give you up to an hour recording time. This cost only about $ suggest investing in an SD flash card as well. There is built in memory, but using a flash card makes the whole experience much easier. All through this using the KISS principle makes for hassle free video production.I like the camera and would recommend it based on price and what I have written. In my research I found nothing that I would want more than this.

Bought this to downsize my travel/vacation equipment. I like the size of the camera. Video taken in daylight is superb. You will have to get used to viewing images on a screen rather than a view finder. This can be used as a great cut away camera with additional lightning for weddings and events. The poor in low light is a subjective rating at best. Even the most expensive cameras work best with additional auxiliary lighting.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF R300 Full HD Camcorder:
Bought this to downsize my travel/vacation equipment. I like the size of the camera. Video taken in daylight is superb. You will have to get used to viewing images on a screen rather than a view finder. This can be used as a great cut away camera with additional lightning for weddings and events. The poor in low light is a subjective rating at best. Even the most expensive cameras work best with additional auxiliary lighting.
