The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens from Nikon is a fast, compact FX-format prime medium telephoto lens. Though optimized for FX-format DSLR cameras, the lens is equally adept at serving any Nikon DX-format DSLR. The combination of its mid-range telephoto design and a fast f/1.8 aperture make it an excellent option for shooting both still images and HD video in low light scenarios. Available light shooters will love the wide-open effect when shooting intimate portraits; in-focus subjects will stay sharp, while distracting backgrounds will melt into a pleasing soft blur. When mounted on a DX-format DSLR, this 85mm prime delivers an apparent focal length of approximately 127mm.

The lens boasts Silent Wave Motor technology (AFS) and Internal Focus for fast and quiet autofocus that won't alter the length of the lens, thus preserving working distance throughout the focus range. The Silent Wave Motor utilizes ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations instead of a gear system to focus the lens, offering beautifully smooth, silent and accurate autofocus operation.

When fine manual focusing is required, just rotate the lens focus ring. The M/A mode switch offers a seamless override of the AF system with practically no time lag at all! Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) improves light transmission and provides better color consistency and minimized flare.

The AF-S 85mm f/1.8 is lightweight, fast, and easy to tote around. Weighing in at 8.0 oz less than the venerable 85mm f/1.4 - shooters that favor prime lenses can toss this optic in their gear bag without hesitation - it's small enough and light enough to take along everywhere!

Fast, compact FX-format prime medium telephoto lens. Fast maximum aperture is great for capturing stills or HD video in low light situations, and for head and shoulder portraiture, weddings and concerts
Take flattering portraits under all lighting conditions: Great for studio, on-set or available light shooting, as well as capturing still images or HD videos of subjects with attractive skin tones and producing beautiful background blur. When you want to isolate your subject from the background in indoor or outdoor photography, this lens renders a gorgeous natural background blur (Bokeh) at the wider aperture settings
Though optimized for FX-format DSLR cameras, the lens is equally adept at serving any Nikon DX-format DSLR. When mounted on a DX-format DSLR, this 85mm prime delivers a 35mm focal length equivalence of approximately 127mm
Boasts Silent Wave Motor technology (AFS) and Internal Focus for fast and quiet autofocus that won't alter the length of the lens, thus preserving working distance throughout the focus range. Internal optical movement is restricted to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel, enabling smaller, lightweight construction and closer focusing distance. SWM utilizes ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations instead of a gear system to focus the lens, converting traveling waves into rotational energy, thus offering beautifully smooth, silent and accurate autofocus operation. Enjoy sharp, clear image quality at all apertures
When fine manual focusing is required, just rotate the lens focus ring. M/A mode enables you to seamlessly override the AF system with practically no time lag at all, even during AF servo operation and regardless of which AF mode is in use!
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) is a multi-layer lens coating that improves light transmission, provides better color consistency, and minimizes ghost and flare to a negligible level. Enjoy reduced reflection in the wider wavelength range and exceptional color balance and reproduction
Rounded 7-blade diaphragm that creates a gorgeous natural background blur (Bokeh) at the wider aperture settings

I'm an old professional who's owned several 85mm lenses in my career. I'm using this on a D600 FX body and it is now one of my favorite lenses of all time! It's lightweight and compact and has gorgeous image quality--sharp all the way out to the corners, great contrast, lovely color depth, and snappy autofocus. I use it mostly for portraiture and landscape work. The boheh at f2.8-4 (where I usually shoot) is beautifully smooth and creamy. This is a wonderful lens.I used to own the f1.4 manual focus version, but found that lens too heavy and not that useful at f1.4; for portraits you often need enough depth of field to get both eyes and ears in focus, so I never shot wide open anyway. The image quality of this 1.8 lens nearly matches the f1.4 version, and far surpasses the f1.8D version that I also oned. This 1.8G is definitely my favorite 85mm that I ever owned.

1st Copy: Severe Front Focus Issue
2nd Copy: Weather seal has a lot of micro cracks.

I give 3 stars for optical performance (substract 1 star each from 1st and 2nd copies). If Nikon quality control was tighten, this lens is a very good performer.

I would recommand this lens, BUT user needs to thoroughly inspect the build quality and check focus accuracy.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

Love love love this lens. I have a cheap 50 mm and really debated whether to buy a more expensive one or the 85 mm. So happy I went with the 85. Great lens for portraits. Great lens for the money. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to upgrade from the 50 mm.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

I finally bought this to have an easy to pack medium-tele lens to compliment the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 that I use every day. I shoot a lot of indoor presentations and formal events where this bright 85mm comes in very handy. It is a sharp lens. Not razor sharp as some reviewers say, but very sharp with the ability to resolve really pleasing levels of detail even at f/2. The images are sharp across the entire field with both DX and FX sensor cameras. It makes for a nice bright viewfinder and the autofocus is quick and accurate. I'm also using it for casual outdoor and formal studio portraits and like the way the pictures look. A classic, must-have, very good quality lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

I have had the opportunity to try the 85MM D and and the 85mm G. The differences are like light and day. To start off, the 85D is better built. More metal, stronger barrel, sharper results as well,
The 85G is not the same robust lens as its sister.
It is mostly plastic, and frankly, not worth considering. Not impressed, Save your money and buy this besuty second hand. Finally, the bokeh on the 85 D is dreamy..

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

My first outing was a little disappointing, as every image was significantly front focused. I was pixel peeping, admittedly; but who wouldn't? It was off enough that even moderate prints looked 'off'. Anyway, it's perfect after AF fine tuning -- my copy on my body required a +13 adjustment.

Otherwise the build quality is fine, the focus quick. I'm very happy with it.

This is not one of those use-for-anything type of lens. But when you have the right composition (everything fits into the frame) the shots come out amazing. Love the blur effect in the background.
Keep in mind this lens wouldn't be able to focus closer than 2.5 feet.

There is some fringing in this lens on the larger apertures. Most apparent in high contrast situations. How ever, this lens is very sharp and the fringing is well controlled on smaller apertures. My copy had a bit of a back focus on a D810, fixed it with in camera adjustment. Super light and compact, very happy with this buy!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

After careful study I chose this 85mm f1.8 over the 1.4 as it is sharper. Check out cameralabs 85mm comparsion. I got this lens specifically to shoot action at large apertures where spot on autofocus is mandatory. The lens I received had a terrible front focus issue, it was completely out of focus shooting wide open. I seamlessly exchanged it with B&H for another, that is why I do business with B&H-they are great with customer service. The second lens also has a front focus issue but I was able to zero it out with an auto focus fine tune on my D800E. This is a great lens for the money but make sure you get a proper focus shooting at f1.8. Test right away! This lens also suffers greatly with green/magenta Longitudinal Chromatic Aberration (out of focus areas) when shooting wide open especially up close. In shots where it really shows, it is unusable in my opinion. I am a NYC pro advertising photog that has had a Madison Ave. studio more than 30 years. Nikon the whole time. This lens is sharp as heck but is a plastic piece of garbage mechanically compared to my old manual focus Nikon lenses. I guess that's called progress....

I have used this for portrait, but with flash and natural light and am stunned by the quality for the price. Photo snobs will eschew this for the faster lens but in the words of others, "the juice is not worth the squeeze". Don't waste money on the pricier lens. This one will work 100% of the time for you perfectly.

It is fast, produces wonderful background blur an is perfect for indoor low light shots. On my D810 I found it is one of those primes you really need to have.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

Have used this with my D7100 and love the quick responsive autofocus. It seems to snap in quickly and provides great start images.
Not a great fan of the hood and how it connects. It does provide great shade to reduce flare.

Having switched from Canon to Nikon, this lens has been nothing short than wonderful. Snaps right to the subject, liveview quick focusing, and super sharp. I would highly recommend this for any photographers kit for a wonderful portrait lens.
