Product Highlights
  • Fast: f/1.8 Compact Prime Lens
  • Optimized for FX Format
  • Nikon F-Bayonet Mount
  • Silent Wave Motor with Internal Focus
  • M/A Focus Mode Switch
  • Nikon Super Integrated Coating

The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens from Nikon is a fast, compact FX-format prime medium telephoto lens. Though optimized for FX-format DSLR cameras, the lens is equally adept at serving any Nikon DX-format DSLR. The combination of its mid-range telephoto design and a fast f/1.8 aperture make it an excellent option for shooting both still images and HD video in low light scenarios. Available light shooters will love the wide-open effect when shooting intimate portraits; in-focus subjects will stay sharp, while distracting backgrounds will melt into a pleasing soft blur. When mounted on a DX-format DSLR, this 85mm prime delivers an apparent focal length of approximately 127mm.

The lens boasts Silent Wave Motor technology (AFS) and Internal Focus for fast and quiet autofocus that won't alter the length of the lens, thus preserving working distance throughout the focus range. The Silent Wave Motor utilizes ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations instead of a gear system to focus the lens, offering beautifully smooth, silent and accurate autofocus operation.

When fine manual focusing is required, just rotate the lens focus ring. The M/A mode switch offers a seamless override of the AF system with practically no time lag at all! Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) improves light transmission and provides better color consistency and minimized flare.

The AF-S 85mm f/1.8 is lightweight, fast, and easy to tote around. Weighing in at 8.0 oz less than the venerable 85mm f/1.4 - shooters that favor prime lenses can toss this optic in their gear bag without hesitation - it's small enough and light enough to take along everywhere!

Fast, compact FX-format prime medium telephoto lens. Fast maximum aperture is great for capturing stills or HD video under ideal lighting conditions, in low light situations, and for head and shoulder portraiture, weddings and concerts
Take flattering portraits under all lighting conditions: Great for studio, on-set or available light shooting, as well as capturing still images or HD videos of subjects with attractive skin tones and producing beautiful background blur. When you want to isolate your subject from the background in indoor or outdoor photography, this lens renders a gorgeous natural background blur (Bokeh) at the wider aperture settings
Though optimized for FX-format DSLR cameras, the lens is equally adept at serving any Nikon DX-format DSLR
Boasts Silent Wave Motor technology (AFS) and Internal Focus for fast and quiet autofocus that won't alter the length of the lens, thus preserving working distance throughout the focus range. Internal optical movement is restricted to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel, enabling smaller, lightweight construction and closer focusing distance. SWM utilizes ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations instead of a gear system to focus the lens, converting traveling waves into rotational energy, thus offering beautifully smooth, silent and accurate autofocus operation. Enjoy sharp, clear image quality at all apertures
When fine manual focusing is required, just rotate the lens focus ring. M/A mode enables you to seamlessly override the AF system with practically no time lag at all, even during AF servo operation and regardless of which AF mode is in use!
When mounted on a DX-format D-SLR, this 85mm prime delivers an apparent focal length of approximately 127mm
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) is a multi-layer lens coating that improves light transmission, provides better color consistency, and minimizes ghost and flare to a negligible level. Enjoy reduced reflection in the wider wavelength range and exceptional color balance and reproduction
Rounded 7-blade diaphragm that creates a gorgeous natural background blur (Bokeh) at the wider aperture settings

I'm an old professional who's owned several 85mm lenses in my career. I'm using this on a D600 FX body and it is now one of my favorite lenses of all time! It's lightweight and compact and has gorgeous image quality--sharp all the way out to the corners, great contrast, lovely color depth, and snappy autofocus. I use it mostly for portraiture and landscape work. The boheh at f2.8-4 (where I usually shoot) is beautifully smooth and creamy. This is a wonderful lens.I used to own the f1.4 manual focus version, but found that lens too heavy and not that useful at f1.4; for portraits you often need enough depth of field to get both eyes and ears in focus, so I never shot wide open anyway. The image quality of this 1.8 lens nearly matches the f1.4 version, and far surpasses the f1.8D version that I also oned. This 1.8G is definitely my favorite 85mm that I ever owned.

I'd have given the lens a 4 star review if not for its poor chromatic aberrations. Also it's fairly soft at f/1.8 but it's usable in certain conditions. But, at f/2.8 and f/4, it's one of the sharpest Nikon lenses I've used! This is definitely the lens I rely on when I take portraits as it produces beautiful bokeh.

I've used this Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 lens for a few weeks on my Nikon d5300 and am constantly amazed at the quality of my photos compared to my kit lens. I decided to buy it at after checking the stats on the DxO Mark lens comparison website. How can a lens at this price point be so much sharper than others at three times the price? It is so freaking good I found a couple used ones on @ that sold for more than the B&H brand new retail price!

The perfect choice for A perfect combination of technology and passion makes this Lens simply amazing! Every shot is a new experience! I use it with a D309s and Image sharpness is excellent where it is needed – in the centre at wide apertures and across the frame when stopped down – the build quality is good and the lightweight design not too much of a burden to be carried around all day.

Tested it out at Mt. Rainier. On a crystal-clear day I could resolve climbers on the Emmons Glacier from 11 kilometers (Nikon D800E, tripod). The lens is just right for that "slightly better than being there" look I try for. The minimal vignetting makes panorama stitching a breeze. Only complaint I have is that f16 is the smallest aperature.

I own a few other prime lenses and have always been interested in this one, I just needed a reason to buy it. Since I'm going to be photographing another wedding, in low-light, I knew now was the time. I am so happy that I bought this lens!! It's a must have for anyone who likes to fill their frames with portrait shots. You do have to make sure you have the space to fit your subjects in, so if it's in tight areas you might find yourself backed-up against a wall, but sometimes it's nice to focus on details in the shot, and not always try to fit everything in. Anyway, this lens is sharp and produces incredible images, I'm so glad I bought it!!

Paired it with a D7100 and was blown away by the quality of the OOC pics before editing. 1.8 makes it a dream to use. Haven't encountered the slow auto focusing that many mention, but I've only used it in pretty well lit scenarios so far. Recommended if you take a lot of portraits and what incredible control of DOF.

I've never used a prime lens before so this was a bit of an adjustment, however, it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. The image quality is fabulous and I'm thrilled that I can shoot in lower light. Another great function of this lens is the ability to shoot in auto focus or manual without having to find a switch.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

I'm a portrait and wedding photographer. I've used this lens for a couple of sessions since I purchased and it and I love it. The bokeh is fantastic, and the image is very sharp. The lightweight build means my wrists won't be aching after an hour shooting. Each ounce makes a difference when you have a heavy FX body, grip, flash and other accoutrement in your hands for hours.

So far no cons, but I'll update as I find them.

For the price, I absolutely recommend it.

This lens is amazing. The AF is a little slow sometimes, but I like to shoot Manual anyways. The depth of field that this lens provides makes me look like a good photographer.

I bought this lens after a long discussion with my teacher and pulled the trigger and wow was he right and i was happy. so sharp on my nikon D7000, focus is a little off but nothing that i couldn't fix and is tact sharp now! best bang for you buck, don't know why you would even bother with the f/1.4 although it is a gorgeous lens.

My compositional style is a "fill the frame" type of shooting. This lens is lightweight and sharp and allows me to fill the frame easily. I prefer it to my "nifty-fifty" as an everyday type of lens. Since I've gotten it, it has become my most used lens.

This lens has made my kit complete. I love my nifty 50 and my 24-70mm is super versatile but now with the 85mm, I feel my portrait taking life is so complete. I absolutely LOVE IT!!!!! If you are on the fence between the 85 1.8 and 85 1.4 then do your research and make the decision for the cheaper option that gives you almost JUST THE SAME results. I watched many tutorials on YouTube about the differences and I was just torn but it made sense financially to do the 1.8 first. And I have not been let down ONE SINGLE BIT.

I have been using my friends 1.4 till I got mine in and I swear, the difference is so small because I can't even tell the 1.8 is lacking in any area. Thank you Nikon for yet again, making my picture taking self very, very pleased!!!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:

I use this lens for landscape work and the occasional portrait - usually of cats. Sharpness is my key concern, and this lens delivers. Shooting at f/5.6 or f/8, it is excellent from corner to corner. The bokeh at wider apertures is pleasant and unobtrusive. Focus speed is fast enough, and the manual focus ring is smooth with virtually no play. Even though it appears to be made from non-metallic material, it has a quality feel to it, and the resulting light weight is a plus. Nothing to complain about.
