International Orders*The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens from Nikon is a fast, compact FX-format prime medium telephoto lens. Though optimized for FX-format DSLR cameras, the lens is equally adept at serving any Nikon DX-format DSLR. The combination of its mid-range telephoto design and a fast f/1.8 aperture make it an excellent option for shooting both still images and HD video in low light scenarios. Available light shooters will love the wide-open effect when shooting intimate portraits; in-focus subjects will stay sharp, while distracting backgrounds will melt into a pleasing soft blur. When mounted on a DX-format DSLR, this 85mm prime delivers an apparent focal length of approximately 127mm.
The lens boasts Silent Wave Motor technology (AFS) and Internal Focus for fast and quiet autofocus that won't alter the length of the lens, thus preserving working distance throughout the focus range. The Silent Wave Motor utilizes ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations instead of a gear system to focus the lens, offering beautifully smooth, silent and accurate autofocus operation.
When fine manual focusing is required, just rotate the lens focus ring. The M/A mode switch offers a seamless override of the AF system with practically no time lag at all! Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) improves light transmission and provides better color consistency and minimized flare.
The AF-S 85mm f/1.8 is lightweight, fast, and easy to tote around. Weighing in at 8.0 oz less than the venerable 85mm f/1.4 - shooters that favor prime lenses can toss this optic in their gear bag without hesitation - it's small enough and light enough to take along everywhere!

I'm an old professional who's owned several 85mm lenses in my career. I'm using this on a D600 FX body and it is now one of my favorite lenses of all time! It's lightweight and compact and has gorgeous image quality--sharp all the way out to the corners, great contrast, lovely color depth, and snappy autofocus. I use it mostly for portraiture and landscape work. The boheh at f2.8-4 (where I usually shoot) is beautifully smooth and creamy. This is a wonderful lens.I used to own the f1.4 manual focus version, but found that lens too heavy and not that useful at f1.4; for portraits you often need enough depth of field to get both eyes and ears in focus, so I never shot wide open anyway. The image quality of this 1.8 lens nearly matches the f1.4 version, and far surpasses the f1.8D version that I also oned. This 1.8G is definitely my favorite 85mm that I ever owned.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:
I purchased this lens for use on a Nikon D600 and have been very pleased with the images from this combination of gear.
Even though I have not yet fine-tuned the lens, images are quite sharp on the focus points.
I have also found acquiring focus reasonably fast.

I use this for portrait photography and as a all around sharpest lens in the box.
SO freaking sharp at all focal lengths. Good bokeh, good contrast, really the best lens for the money.
No vibration reduction I guess could be a con. But I don't really like it so I can't really think of any.

I had the 85mm 1.8D before this, and this version is much lighter. The autofocus is a a tad slower then the previous version but the photos it produces are fantastic. You won't be disappointed by adding this lens to your collection.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:
This lens is great for stunning portraits! And if the photographer is skillful enough you'll have enough distance to take some impressive candids too!
I've done some shots and it really makes a difference. I went from doing (amazing portraits) with my 50mm. F/1.8 to this lens and the difference is quite remarkable. You get the most amazing effect of subject isolation when you want it by opening the lens and for portrait photographers this is always a bless.
As I took it for my first time out in Central Park, some birds caught my attention. I instinctively pulled the camera and shot them at distance. The raw files are rich in details, and even the pattern of the feathers can be clearly recognized shooting at an aperture of 2.8.
The one disadvantage if this lens (which naturally comes with telephoto lenses) is that you can't allow yourself to shoot under a speed of 125 without a tripod. The lens is big and pictures won't come too clear unless you're very skilled holding the camera steady (I can shoot just fine with my other lenses at a speed of 30).
So if you're in a situation where lighting is poor, you better pray that you brought a tripod or that your ISO is good enough with noise.
This lens will suit the needs of any portrait photographer. It is such a magnificent piece of photography. And in one single shoot it became the favorite lens in my collection.

This is another knockout lens from Nikon's 1.8 prime line. Produces incredible tack-sharp photos with terrific bokeh. Lens quality feels solid (it's not the 24-70 2.8G, but it sure doesn't feel cheap to me), reasonably fast autofocus, and excellent image quality.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:
I purchased this lens mainly to use for portraits. I've been using my 70-200mm f/2.8, and while that lens performs beautifully, it is a LOT of lens wield. This lens is nice and light, and my copy is extremely sharp. Focus is quick, and so far, I've not found the bokeh to be as unpleasant as some of the other reviews I've read.
I would think that this would also make a nice sports lens if the focal distance works for you.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:
This is an amazingly sharp lens, supper fast and clean. The color reproduction is fantastic as well. I'm a commercial photographer and yes I could justify the cost for either the Sigma 1.4 or even the Nikon 1.4 but considering I've used both and did a comparison the 1.8G is by far way sharper and is lighter, and less costly for those looking on a budget. The only cons is that it only has 7 blades where the older D version had 9 rounded blades but I'd still rather have this one. By far an amazing lens I would recommend it to anyone looking for that portrait lens or on a APS-C camera a mid-range telephoto.

This is by far the sharpest lens I have to date. It takes me back years to when telephoto wan't an option (yep - that long ago!). The additional speed is what I was looking for and got along with superb clarity. The only thing I'm not sure about is why I waited this long. It has taken a bit of work getting back into using fixed focal length because it is a slightly different technique for me, but it has been well worth it. I would highly recommend this lens if it fits into your style.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens:
I have not used the 85 f/1.8G lens enough to make a real judgment, but, despite what some reviews say, I find the autofocus to be very fast, and I appreciate the lighter weight compare to my older lens.
As for ultimate quality, I'm not sure that it is sharper than my old manual focus 85 f/1.4 Ai-s (as at least one reviewer claims that it is, but I'm not so sure that the older lens is not slightly sharper -- At f/2.8, f/4, & f/5.6, the old Ai-S lens is excellent).
Unfortunately, my older manual lens is heavy, and, if tilted slightly, the weight will shift the focus and you must keep your hand on the barrel in order to prevent the slippage.
At present, I like the new lens for general everyday use, but I would use the older manual focus lens if using the DSLR for video work. I might also use the older lens if I had a subject that remained still and I had time to do critical focus.
I do wish the new lens had VR -- I might consider giving it 5 stars if it did.
