I've been editing my photos for over a year now, and the accuracy of color has become a very important aspect of the process. I started looking for a monitor color calibrating solution to try out. The Spyder4Express by datacolor system went on sale, conveniently priced within my budget, so i bought it.MacBook Pro Mavericks OS X 10.9.2My MacBook Pro is my most important machine; its my main editing machine. So far, I relied on the Apple's own built in monitor calibrating solution, the one where you adjust the sliders until you can't see the apple anymore :). I decided to use the Spyder4Express on my MacBook Pro first, because I wasn't sure how many computers can I calibrate with one license. After all, it's a cheap monitor calibrator! The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I had zero problems installing software and running the calibration process, but it required me to create an account using the code on the software CD that was included in the box. It took about 15 minutes from start to finish. The result? I saw little difference between the before and after. The Apple's own screen calibration tool did a good job calibrating the screen colors. I did not see any difference in the white balance before and after calibration. The datacolor's system did improve the contrast some, and made the colors stand out more, as they seemed kind of subtle before. There is a major downside though; you can calibrate either your external monitor, or the laptops screen, but not both. You have to choose which one is more important to you, but this may be Apple's own limitation. Windows 7 LaptopMy old HP laptop still had the factory default calibration setting on it, and it had a noticeable blue hue to it. It never bothered me because I mainly use it as a Windows Media Center machine. I record live TV broadcast, and I watch free Hulu.Note: Windows Media Center is an excellent free app from Microsoft! I installed the Spyder4Express software on my HP laptop using the CD included in the box. The software found my account that I created half an our before on my MacBook Pro, and the installation process went smooth and quick. The calibration process took only a few minutes, and the result was dramatic. The screen's hue is much warmer now, but all the colors are very distinct. What I mean, is that the contrast is pretty high, the blue is very blue and green is very green, while the overall hue is warm. This looks like a "consumer grade" setup, designed to look pleasing to an average, non-photographer person. To be honest, I think it's OK for watching TV, so I'm actually happy with the result.iPad MiniYes, you can use the Spyder4Express sensor to calibrate your iPad's screen, but in a limited way. Turns out, you have to use their app, called SpyderGallery, to view the color corrected photos! Their app can display color corrected photos on your iPad, in your Flickr gallery, and your Facebook photos. I'm not sure if there is any benefit to the Facebook side, since they compress the photos mercilessly, but I think the Flicker side, and your camera roll can be very useful. You can use the SpayderGallery app to show your work to prospective clients, this is the way most people show their work.Note: You can switch the color correction on and off while viewing a picture, and the corrected version looks a lot better! To calibrate your iPad, you use a computer on the same wireless network running their special software, called SpyderGallery Desktop. The process is quick and easy; you connect the color sensor to the computer and place it on your iPad's screen. The result is significant and pleasing!I think this unit is well worth the money I spent on it, so I'm giving it 5 stars. It's clearly a "consumer grade" product, which is not necessarily bad. The system is leaning towards "please the average guy" setup; high contrast and high saturation. I think serious professionals should look for something better, but it's great for nome use....

So I bought this believing it might make a difference in color accuracy when printing... wrong. The calibration process simply made my display too warm, and it wasn't simply an issue of me being used to a "colder" display - I compared actual prints to the soft-proofs I saw on my monitor and it simply wasn't accurate at all. I also tried a piece of white photographic paper with a white canvas on Photoshop and the canvas was once again too warm. I tried calibrating with natural daylight in my room, at night time with the warmish bulbs I have, and even in complete darkness, but they all resulted in the same, too-warm calibration.

I used this on my Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro. It is easy to use, found the download online very easily since my laptop doesn't have a cd drive. Followed the instructions and had a calibrated display in less than 10 minutes.

Comments about Datacolor Spyder4EXPRESS Display Calibration System:

This can become a lengthy article if one chooses to take the time to carefully explain the differences between a calibrated monitor on one that hasn't been calibrated. I'll try being right to the point, from my years of working with calibrated monitor. If you use an uncalibrated monitor, your photos may look reasonably good to you, and perhaps to others, too. But the untrained eye can not always tell how good an images is until you've tried making photographic print.

Once you've calibrated the monitor (I use Spyder4 Express) and look at the before and after calibration results, you will see a significant change. Once the calibration has been done, the new monitor profile will automatically place itself into your photo edition program, such as Adobe Photoshop. After calibration, working on images becomes less of a chore, and the accuracy of your colors and other setting will improve significantly.

After using calibrated monitors for the past 12 or more years, I would never work with a monitor that hasn't been calibrated. The cost of the Spyder4 Express unit is definitely worth the price.

Made all the difference. My monitor was running a little blue and I didn't really notice untill after the calibration. Only issue is that it has a blue light that stays on once activated and stays on whe the computer is turned off, I edit in my room and its so bright at night it couldn't sleep. I had to disconnect it.

Simple to install and set up, simple to use, effective results, and all at a very reasonable price. After upgrading my system to Win 8.1, my color and gamma were completely off from the prints I was getting from the lab. It didn't help that I was using a legacy monitor that 8.1 didn't recognize and the manufacturer didn't have an up-to-date driver for. The Spyder4Express calibrated the monitor in one try and I'm back in business.

Wish it had a slower "hi-precision scan" mode, but that's what the more expensive units are for.

I was able to plug this in and follow the directions easily.
To be honest the difference on my Imac after calibrating was nearly undetectable. But I guess I feel better knowing that know as I'm a professional photographer.
                                  The price is quite reasonable.

The color calibrator worked just as advertised. Install the software as directed, place the unit where directed, let it do its thing... all done!

As for the people dissappointed about not being able to use it on multiple machines, software licenses (you seldom actually BUY the software) usually stipulate that only one instance of the software can be installed at any given time. So, if you need to MOVE the software from one machine to another, you might need to give Datacolor a call...

Comments about Datacolor Spyder4EXPRESS Display Calibration System:

This is a great product, it's easy to use and it works as advertised. This product WILL color calibrate you monitor so that you increase the likelihood that what you see on your screen is going to be a realistic representation of what a professional print lab can deliver in print form.

I have latest edition of iMac which already features a really stunning and quite accurate display. The primary difference after calibration on this particular iMac is that the overall tone is warmer. Once the profile is completed you can easily do back and forth comparisons between the standard iMac color profile and the Spyder4EXPRESS profile. With the new profile applied I can see that my images are, in fact, warmer than I previously realized. It's also had the effect of brightening up some shadow detail in my images. It's important to make the distinction that these differences reflect only a change in how the images are displayed on my monitor and not a change to the actual image.

This would be a 5 star review but I think it's pretty lame that the product can be used to calibrate only one monitor (at a time). You basically have to spend twice as much on the next model to have the ability to configure multiple monitors. This is not a deal breaker for me because I do all my editing on one machine.

Just as the packaging suggested, set-up was a breeze and the Spyder4Express did its job fuss-free. For those hobbists looking for a simple calibrator to tune your monitors, I highly recommend this!
