Comments about LensCoat for the Canon 500mm f/4 IS II Lens (Realtree Max 4):

The window over the distance selector switch made it difficult to operate quickly and I had to cut it out with a razor blade.
The hole for the hood lock knob is too small so that the fabric bunches up around the raised area the knob screws into. This matters because I line up the knob with the camera's hot shoe as a means to locate and track birds in flight and planes at airshows, and now there is a fabric wrinkle directly in my line of sight. I plan on taking the hood section off and enlarging the hole.

Comments about LensCoat for the Canon 500mm f/4 IS II Lens (Realtree Max 4):

Shelling out the BIG bucks for Canon's BIG 500 f/4 IS II was a one-time life event for me. Buying several accessories as a follow-up was a no brainer. Being a "nick" and "bump" person, in minor fashion, I knew I had to provide a layer of soft protection for this long lens since I like to photograph wildlife from inside the car in both winter and summer.

Moving the lens from the passenger seat in either vehicle and attaching it to a "sky hook" device on the diver's side window in the presence of a skittish critter takes some doing. Thus, slight bumps on the steering wheel, dash, or window frame are not always avoidable. Point made in favor of the LensCoat.

Also, as a contracted free-lance photog, I like the option of removing most of the LensCoat pieces when I shoot an event like an MLS game or other sporting event. Although the LensCoat for the Canon 500 II is a bit snug, the task is manageable and little time is wasted.

The negatives are two: The black dust cover that comes with the 500 does not fit well over the barrel extension piece when the LenCoat piece is on the barrel. It is just a minor annoyance but others should be aware of this. I read about this before purchasing the LenCoat, so it is just part of the deal. Second, I have trouble occasionally with the plastic shield that covers the lens's optional controls like switching from AF to MF. Control through that layer of plastic adds seconds to some wildlife shots that you don't have. IMHO, these are the JUST DEAL WITH IT issues.

The materials are incredibly engineered and easy to install while offering great protection. The investment of this product will definitely pay dividends in protecting the investment of your lens. I too like how the cover is a constant temperature and make handholding easier. The water resistant cover for switches are desirable as well. Overall worth the cost and an excellent product!

i don't know about you but it never fails when i am out shooting some ex-felon type comments that looks like an expensive lens! with this on it is just another lens and i can say no it just an old lens i have had forever. works great for wildlife and to keep the lens clean for resale. i do not have to worry now about resting my lens on things and scuffing it up or getting it dirty. i have had no problems changing any settings with it on as other have commented.

Comments about LensCoat for the Canon 500mm f/4 IS II Lens (Realtree Max 4):

I would rather this be made out of lycra than neoprene. It is EXTREMELY tight and hard to put on, and once on, the standard lens cap won't easily fit over it. I eventually got the Canon black lens cap over it, but the LensCoat curled down from the front of the lens. The drawing in the instructions of all the pieces and where they go appears to have pieces 2 and 3 flipped. It looks like they may have copied the drawing from another lens, like the 500mm I. The instructions are clear and helpful. There are 4 buttons on the forward lens barrel that are covered by the neoprene. You can still push these through the neoprene if you notice the three little tic-marks on the adjacent (towards the user) barrel piece to find them. For now, I took this back off and am deciding whether to use it or not.

I had to modify to remove the plastic windows over controls on the lens, but otherwise I love the product. I would not b able to work the controls through a plastic covering.

The cover gives nice protection, keeps the gear at a comfortable temperature, and most importantly gets rid of the shiny white, which allows better camouflage during wildlife shooting.

Comments about LensCoat for the Canon 500mm f/4 IS II Lens (Realtree Max 4):

It's a good way to protect your lens because the neoprene is thick enough to absorb most bumps and bruises. It fits very tightly so it's a little difficult to put on, but will never slip off accidentally. The downside is that many of the controls on the lens are covered up. The controls are visible through little plastic windows and some may be actually operated through the windows, but it difficult to do. There is also no provision for changing filters such as a polarizing filter. I have had to leave some of these parts uncovered, therefore defeating the purpose of total camouflage.
