Comments about Azden FMX-22 Portable Field Mixer:

I use this to cleanly boost the signal coming into my portable recorder, a Roland R-26. It is of decent build and does an admirable job of boosting the signal. As many people are trying to get a higher quality sound for their work, this is one way to do it. You get a quality field mixer like this one with a good transformer, then you can record with a lower noise floor on your portable recorder. I recently did an unscientific test (using my ears) and compared the signal this creates with that of the Sound Devices MM-1 and could not hear any appreciable difference. Although the Sound Devices is built like a German tank compared to the Azden, I suppose Azden had to cut costs somewhere, but they did it on the outside, not the inside where it matters. I highly recommend this field mixed and do not think you will be able to find a better mixer at this price point. The only alternative to this that I can see is the Sound Devices MM-1, but that is one channel less, or the Sound Devices MixPre, which is triple the price of this. However, for my ears, I cannot hear any difference between the MM-1 and this unit.

I use this mixer for broadcasting. I plug my NTG-3 in it and I use an XLR output for the camera. The stereo output is going into my H4. The only thing is that the phantom power button for the 1st channel is broken but it still works. I don't think I'll return it for that.

Comments about Azden FMX-22 Portable Field Mixer:

This is the first mixer I've purchased for on camera sound capture. I'm using this with my BMCC and a Rode NTG1 mic. All the options I need are there and the price was right so I have this unit a go. It's pretty big for on camera work and it doesn't come with any attachment options other than Velcro.

It uses AA batteries which you can get anywhere.

Using the XLR outputs, the sound is very clean even at max gain. When outputting with the stereo output, I found the sound to be seriously lacking in low end. However since I only had the one cable and recorder to test at the time, I can't say for sure it's the mixer's issue, but I think it is.

Other than then size my only other complaint would be the actual gain is not that high.
