Questions? Ask our experts:

The Olympus TCON-17X (1.7x) Telephoto Conversion Lens is especially designed for the Olympus XZ-1 camera. It increases the focal length of the lens by 1.7x, but without changing the aperture. With this adapter, the XZ-1 achieves the 35mm equivalent of a 190mm telephoto lens, but with the very large (for a telephoto) aperture of f/2.5, greatly increasing the possibilities of shooting in low-light without camera shake. The CLA-12 Conversion Lens Adapter is required for operation of this telephoto conversion lens.

For the XZ-1 camera
Increases focal length by 1.7x
Does not affect the maximum aperture of f/2.5--it remains bright for great telephoto shots without camera shake

Comments about Olympus TCON-17X (1.7X) Telephoto Conversion Lens:

Purchased this from a friend I've just met on internet forum, at 55% price of official.

    Pros:
The lens perform extraordinary well, unlike the cheaper counterparts, it has almost no visible chromatic aberration or distortion occurring, which gives it a effective magnifying factor of 1.7x.

    Cons:
The lens is extreme bulky, if you compare this with what is currently available in the market.

Overpriced, 199 + 45(Adapter)=244USD. In this price, you may buy an pre-owned XZ-2 or a brand new XZ-1.

Small tolerance on focal length. Vignetting occurs from around 3.4x zoom, although at 3.2x zoom, the vignetting is still acceptable.

    Bottomline:
You should wait for an pre-owned TCON-17x become available instead of getting a brand new one due to its expensive price tag. Consider getting this if you are into wildlife photography and blurry portrait.

Comments about Olympus TCON-17X (1.7X) Telephoto Conversion Lens:

I use this lens on an Olympus Stylus 1 and the results are tack sharp. The only reason I didn't give this lens 5 stars is that it is a little bulky. It would be perfect if Olympus would make a tripod ring for the CL-13 adapter that would allow you to attach the lens to a mono-pod. If you have a Stylus 1 this lens is a must. You wont be disappointed.

Comments about Olympus TCON-17X (1.7X) Telephoto Conversion Lens:

Bought this for an Olympus XZ-2, along with the required adapter. Does what is advertised, but only at maximum zoom. Reduce the zoom and you start getting vignetting almost immediately. So - it gives you a large aperture fixed focal length. It is heavy and large, so it really adds to the size of the camera, not the kind of thing you would want to carry around. Good for indoor setting where you need the large aperture.

Comments about Olympus TCON-17X (1.7X) Telephoto Conversion Lens:

I had very high hopes for this lens. I bought it to do bird photography in conjunction with my Lumix FZ100 (and soon FZ200). I currently have the Panasonic 1.7X teleconverter and a Nikon TC-e15ed 1.5X converter as well. My hope was that this lens would have the reach of my Panny lens and the clarity and quality of the Nikon. Sadly it didn't.The first problem I encountered with this lens was that it slowed down and regularly hampered my camera's auto-focus. Time and time again (I used it two days and took about 500 photos) the camera simply couldn't "lock in" on the subject. This was only aggrevated the more I zoomed in.Of those frames I could get a focus lock, the quality was often sub-par (compared to my other teleconverters). I was if the lens did wonky and random things to my camera's exposure and color settings. In the end this wasn't worth the $[$] I paid for it. I'm now trying to find a Nikon TC-e17ed 1.7X teleconverter (but they are rather rare I fear.)B&H did, however, promtly and efficiently issue me a refund. For that (and their past service) I'll gladly continue shopping with them.

Comments about Olympus TCON-17X (1.7X) Telephoto Conversion Lens:

The advantage of this 1.7x conversion lens is that it retains the f2.5 maximum aperture at full zoom, but it is offset somewhat by its size and weight. You'll likely need a small camera kit bag to carry the lens and adapter. I wish that the lens and adapter used a bayonet connection instead of threads, as it seems possible to cross thread the connection. I recommend installing the adapter on the camera first, and then add the lens; the lighter weight of the adapter alone will help you to align the connection to the camera. Reverse the process to remove. The lens performance appears to be excellent, it's a welcome enhancement to extend the range of the XZ-1.
