Additional features include "Beauty Mode with Makeup Mode", a function that beautifies portraits by softening shadows and smoothing wrinkles and blemishes. Magic Art Filters come into play, helping you expand your creativity with 12 different special effects which can be added to photos and videos. This is my first digital camera. First off, this camera, though small, has a substantial feel to it. I find the controls easy to operate and the camera has that well built look and feel. It's not a kid-proof, resistant to shock and abuse type of camera but it is nice and solid. The battery/card compartment door is plastic but otherwise the body is metal.Since I am new to digital I found that the biggest single thing to get used to versus my fully manual 35mm SLR film camera is pressing the shutter button halfway while composing the picture but before taking the picture in order to allow the camera to do the focusing and exposure control. When you do that a focus frame appears on the display. It turns green and the camera beeps when the focus is locked. The exposure settings are then displayed on the screen. You then press the shutter release all the way and the picture gets taken. There are three focusing options; face detection, spot and tracking. So far I have tended to leave it set to spot since I find that gives me more control over the shot. My experience so far is that the focusing is pretty accurate as long as you get a green light. In low light a separate light on the front of the camera optionally comes on to assist the focusing. This also doubles as the charging light when you charge the battery which is done in-camera.I took some pictures of some antique prints as a test and displayed them on my PC. I found that I could zoom in on very fine details that normally I can't see well or at all without the help of a magnifying glass. Maybe that's typical of modern digital but it certainly impressed me. The zoom lens operates smoothly but it moves quickly so you need a delicate touch on the control to get it to a specific intermediate point. A lot of the pictures I have taken at high and even full optical zoom, handheld have tended to be surprisingly blur free. This tells me that the sensor shift image stabilization mechanism is effective. Another impressive feature is the macro. There are two settings for that, with one that allows focusing all the way down to 1cm – that's less than half an inch. The camera has a full automatic setting which I haven't tried very much yet. For me it's more fun to explore and experiment with the program functions and features. The CD that's in the box includes Olympus Viewer 2. It's for viewing, editing and organizing. It set up easily on my PC, which is running XP. Image transfer from the camera via USB is straightforward, at least for the handful of images I tend to take in one go, and the images get automatically stored in OV2 along with shooting information, speed, exposure, focal length, date etc., etc. OV2 also recognizes and plays the videos and stitches together panoramas. There was also another software package on the CD which I haven't tried yet. I am not a photography or digital camera expert, but I am interested and I appreciate good pictures. I like my camera a lot. I wanted a small camera that works well and so far I am honestly impressed.

I USE IT FOR EVERYDAY SHOOTING WHI,E RIDING A HORSE. IT'S OKAY. A LITTLE HARD TO ACCESS THE SETTINGS WITH ONE HAND. MY OTHER CAMERA HAD A DIAL AND IT WAS A LITTLE EASIER TO USE. GOT TO GET USED TO THIS ONE. MY DAUGHTER AND HER HUSBAND HAD A GREAT TIME EXPLORING THE DIFFERENT SHOOTING MODES. I'LL KNOW MORE ABOUT IT AFTER A GOOD LONG RIDE.

This was the perfect camera for me. The menu is so simple and when you select an option it tells you what the camera will do. I had stayed away from digital cameras before because they were so hard to figure out but, this VR-340 by Olympus is the purfect fit for me and I'm sure others would feel the same way.

Comments about VR-340 Digital Camera (Black):

I've got a lot of cameras, wanted one that could truly go in a pocket and not cost an arm and leg. Sure a phone, but phones don't do 24mm to 240mm equiv. zoom. So got this, and it's cool white metal...and is 'small'. Good at ISO 100-200, and for small snaps above that since the noise reduction makes the photos mushy when the light gets low. Kind of amazing how good the 'P' mode is, since am used to shooting much more manually with my other cameras. The super macro mode is quite good. Giving good details of very small objects. It kind of amazed me. Got it on sale from B&H in December and glad I did. Lots of fun with this camera. Oh yeah makes pretty good video too, for a pocket camera.

I had this one replaced the returned canon a1300. As a point and shot camera, this one is looking good. The screen is amazing. and the quality of the picture is right for a point and shot camera. I went to Yellowstone national park right after had this one with my Nkon D2xs and a Nikon D80, I really appraciate the quality of the pics when I only use the 8 MP resolution. It's really phenomenal for the price.

Comments about VR-340 Digital Camera (Red):

I bought it as a gift for my wife. She complained that the pictures on her old Olympus weren't sharp enough, too long to focus, etc. This camera replaces one that is at least 6 years old and the difference is astonishing. Plus it takes movies. Easy to carry around, get a quick picture camera with a good zoom range and easy to use features.

Comments about VR-340 Digital Camera (Purple):

I don't like to read instructions and needed something simple that takes good pictures and does not require too much adjustments. I chose Olympus because I had two of them in the past and I liked the photos I took with them. This one is doing a great job. The camera zooms x10 and the image is still very clear. Easy to use and relatively fast.
