This Elinchrom Ranger Quadra Ready-to-Go Battery - Eco-Ringflash Set is exactly what the savvy photographer needs for soft shadowless light in fashion, portrait, nature, medical, dental and research imaging.
The included Eco Ringflash comes with a white diffuser for an even softer effect than that which is usually provided by this shoot-through head. The renowned Ranger Quadra RX battery-powered pack is a perfect mate to the ringflash, providing 400Ws of power with short flash durations and recycling times as short as of 0.36-2.2 seconds.
This comprehensive kit comes with the ringflash head and diffuser, the Quadra RX pack with battery, multi-voltage charger and a shoulder strap. While you've already shed the wall outlet with the purchase of the Quadra RX, Elinchrom sweetens the deal by including the EL Skyport Speed Transmitter for wireless triggering of your pack at distances up to 393'.

I'll start by saying I love this product, it does everything I wanted and expected it to do lighting wise. The light is very distinctive, hiding unflattering shadows and creating that great shadow glow if shooting a subject close to a white background.
But it loses a lot of points for it's really poor design, eg;
1) The diffuser falls off if you don't stick it with tape
2) The mounting bracket for the camera is really fiddly to get straight, the bars stick in your chest if you hang the camera round your neck, the screw on the back gets in the way of your hand if using a short lens. Would be better with a quick release option too.
3) The display and settings are completely unintuitive and very difficult to navigate without the manual - especially changing RX frequency
4) The hooks that attach the strap to the battery are painted black which scratch off in normal use making the thing look 2 years old after 2 months use
5) The standard battery is too heavy to comfortably use for prolonged periods - I got the Lithium pack which is 1kg lighter

It takes a little preparation, to get the light and lens aligned, cable connected and trigger set into place. Once you become comfortable with all the pieces, you're ready to go. When you get the exposure dialed in, WOW! That's exactly what I wanted to see. The halo effect, the shadowless subject, the white highlight in the eyes. It's a powerful flash even set at 3.0 on the battery. At 6.0 (full power) you can get 150 or more shots! I'm just getting started with it and hope to shoot my first model this weekend. But I have shot myself and I'm very happy. My only disappointment is that I can't adjust the lens normally if it's too short or too long. You also have to make sure that the lens goes past the light rim or you get light aberrations. I use a 24-150 lens for now and I have made my own way around these things. For the results I get, I can overlook them. The diffusion cover is excellent to soften the bright light on the subject. So far I haven't even come close to wearing the battery down. I also plan to buy the 2 strobes and use them with the battery as mobile studio lights. I want to also use this light as my main light for parties in low light situations for great effects. I'm sure that more expensive lights do offer more, but for the money I'm very happy with my ringflash and battery.
