The Polaroid 52mm Neutral Density Fader Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing a reduction of about 1.3 to 8.6 stops. The ND 3x to ND 400x density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, allowing you to previsualize the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.

I bought this filter for use with my 50 f/1.4 so I could shoot out doors wide open. It works great to about the 5th ND stop then starts producing crazy colors and lines. Bottom line is if you only really need about 2-5 stops of fade, this is the perfect filter but if your trying to hit that higher end buy a better filter.

This ND fader was the cheapest one they had in stock when I bought it. it works so that's nice. Unfortunately it doesn't have any numbers on it, but it goes from ND 3 to ND 400 so that's a pretty huge range. The alignment of the ring was off though. the minimum wasn't the actual minimum and the maximum was a little bit brighter than the real maximum.

as a photographer the numbers dont matter too much, but as a filmmaker (especially when shooting on film), this is a huge problem.

Comments about Polaroid 52mm Neutral Density Fader Filter:

i use it for snow or very bright lighting as well as some videography. It has a very nice feel to the adjustment ring, it does not have numbers written on the side to indicate the f-stops but that is a small fault it works great to adjust it till your exposure looks right. another thing and i think this is a product of all adjustable nd filters but when the filter at it's maximum it has a purple cross in the exposure. the purple means you should probably adjust the white balance when you use the filter as well

I bought a 52mm filter. And I got a 52mm filter. BUT the outer filter ring was 55mm. This means I cannot use a filter stacker. Like I use with all of my other filters. Very odd.

Stops light, but is not elegant hardware. Handling of the front element feels a little loose, as though it's pressing in wherever you touch it. Heard about a greenish cast at the higher stops, and I have noticed this as well. Gradates nicely and the lower stops seem to darken things subtly. Marks are inexact on mine, though -- "lightest" to "darkest" markings don't align to the indicators precisely, so you rely more on eyeballing it.

I am very pleased with this filter. An absolute must for shooting outdoors with an HDLSR. I find it a pain to screw on/off with some lens hoods and it can be fussy with lens caps at times (due to increase in lens diameter) so you might find yourself taking it on and off more than you like.

Bought this filter for my son who is getting into photography through an art class in high school. He wanted to explore use of a nuetral density filter and this provided a great way to learn without having to buy multiple filters. Took some shots of moving water and he was able to achieve a "smoothness" on the surface of the water that was excellent. Easy to use (do not install over a lens protector filter - that screwed up our colors), good to great results.

I bought this variable ND filter to take with my to colorado for some soft waterfall shots. For that purpose it worked wonderfully. The only issue I had with it was when operating it at the darkest end. It seemed to be quite inconsistent on the edges at wide angle. I had some rocks with sunlight on them and a stream that was shadowed. when i darkened the filter to its maximum setting, the rocks didnt darken at all from the last shot, while the rest darkened significantly. This is the only filter of this type i have ever used, so I'm not sure if that is inherent with this type of filter or if it would be considered a flaw. Other than that, the filter operated smoothly and consistently on every setting but maximum, and seems to be pretty clear.
