Comments about Sony XBA-4 Balanced Armature Headphones:

Firstly, let me start by saying what I am basing my comparison on.I own a pair of custom fit Ultimate Ears UE18, they have 6 balanced armature speakers, and cost around $ for the pair. You're not going to beat that sound. So, I have been on a mission to find a pair of everyday headphones that will give me good sound - as nothing is going to really achieve the range, and quality of a pair of custom earphones. So I picked up a pair of the Sony XBA-4. Great packaging, great case, good range of accessories. But the first bummer note was that there was no Comply foam sleaves.I put them on, and went through a variety of music on my iPhone, from Tech-House, to Jack White, to Tribe Called Quest.Great definitition, great balance, and the bass is amazing. But, the volume ceiling, for lack of a better word, blew hard. The range and the ceiling was NOT there at all.So then I connected my headphone amp to my iPhone to clean up the sound, and give me the ceiling and headroom. For example, if you plug a pair of of Sennheiser HD-25 monitor over-ear headphones to an iPhone, you can crank it up all the way, and you'll get nothing. But, if you connect it to a home system, or a deejay mixing board, then you get the punch. Also, if you have a decent headphone amp, you will get the full effect. With this in mind, I hooked up my headphone amp and gave the Sonys a run. Blew even harder. Soon as I pushed the volume, the headphones started to crackle! I couldn't believe it, balanced armature earphones crackling!?! I've owned the Shure SE535, I've also used the Westone UM3x and NEVER had them crackle on me. Never. Then looking at the specs I then realized the issue, the imedence of the Sony XBA 4 is a ridiculous 8 ohm! The Westone's are 56 ohm, the Shure's are 36 ohm, and my UE18's are 26 ohm.So there is absolutely NO resistence on the Sony's to handle power output from a music source.Maybe Sony did this on purpose so people do not damage their hearing, but it is doing the exact opposite, I have to turn the volume up on my iPhone up to full to actually understand the sound quality (partially). Whereas with any of the other headphones I mentioned, I turn it up maybe half, or three-quarters to get a good, clear crisp sound. Half volume on any of these sounds to achieve acceptable sound levels and quality, and three-quarters for when you're feeling in a really good mood and want to jam. These are definitely not audiphile earphones. They have the audiophile price, with out the sound.Another issue was the staying in place issue. Its great if you're sitting, not moving. But any sort of slight movement, then you're running into issues.I was having lunch at my desk, and with every chew of my meal I took, the more the earphones slipped out of my ear eventually falling out.I returned these. And I sprung the extra bucks and got the Grado GR10. Now that is an audiophone earphone. They don't offer all the frills of the Sony XBA-4, like no case, or adapter accessories, but wow, they more than make up for in sound.Sometimes simple is better.
