Comments about Dot Line SWIVI External Monitor for DSLR:

i love the layout and the way it attaches to the camera. it makes for great compact shooting. problem one is it is made of plastic and about 20 days of shooting over 2 months of an independent film the swivel parts became loose. it still works but its worth mentioning its not made of the best materials. also the hdmi cord is very short and you need a double female adapter to make the cord longer if you want it on a crane. it took me forever to find the adapter. that being said it makes a good screen for a B camera or if your a casual or semi pro shooter.

Comments about Dot Line SWIVI External Monitor for DSLR:

Contrast and Brightness are poor on this monitor. I tried adjusting the settings in the menu system but it just introduces noise and makes the colors look washed out. This was using a Canon 60d camera which I understands drops the resolution to 480p when recording and it monitors and 1080i.Problem is that even when monitoring the resolution looks bad. Swivel USA list their specs at 800x600 , but in my professional opinion image quality is very poor. The concept of mounting to the bottom of the camera seemed like a great idea but for me at least it just feels very awkward. Also this product feel very cheaply made out of hollow plastic and the swivel screen is very rough and does not twist easily, definitely feels like it would break over time.Overall this product feels to me like it should cost no more than [$]-[$]. If you can deal with average-poor image quality and just want a bigger screen then maybe, but I'm with those that feel when you buy something it needs to be great-excellent. I would rate this product as very poor due to the image quality, severely disappointed .

Comments about Dot Line SWIVI External Monitor for DSLR:

This monitor is absolutely amazing at the price. I just shot video of a wedding in downtown Nashville and it was so much better having this monitor then using my 5d mark iii's lcd. The camera's lcd is amazing to ,just small.I needed a monitor that would allow me to have a view of what I was recording when I was doing aerial shots and the swivel allowed just for that. I am extremely impressed with this monitor,it really exceeded my expectations. the only thing I would recommend is adjusting exposure using camera's monitor as the swivi shows a little lighter than actual, this can be easily done by just turning off the swivi, adjusting and turning back on. Can't beat for the price.

Comments about Dot Line SWIVI External Monitor for DSLR:

This product far surpassed my initial expectations, especially since people were putting it down for the plastic feel - remember, your dSLR has a plastic shell as well, and this monitor feels nearly as sturdy. The screen size is perfect for holding out at a comfortable distance, the image is crisp, and the peaking focus assist works brilliantly - after a few casual shoots (live bands, low light, shallow DoF), I've already noticed a dramatic increase of useable shots.I also own a SmallHD 9" monitor, and I have to say, this SWIVI is better for the basic functions a monitor should serve, and at 1/3 the price. It may not be built like a tank, but it will survive my day-to-day usage, and being that it can be attached directly to the camera means it's always there, unlike the SmallHD which requires a small rig at best.My only complaints would centre around the obstruction of the eyepiece when it's attached, so switching between video and stills is not easy (something that I do regularly while shooting bands), and the obstruction of the USB port as well, so I will have to figure that out when I ultimately add that cool new USB focus device. These things are really not big problems, but if you are like me and want to constantly go between video and stills, you'll have to think about your configuration - or grab a second body just for stills.Oh, and if there's a way to default to keep the peaking focus mode ON, that would be great, because after snapping a few photos (in video mode), the peaking focus turns off, so I have a few seconds of down time while things switch back to video and turn the assist back on again.I will be looking forward to larger shoots and having this as my on-board monitor for my big rig, and with the HDMI thru port it will enable me to run my SmallHD off my shoulder for a director to watch. This is another fantastic feature, as how many rigs can accommodate twin monitors?

Comments about Dot Line SWIVI External Monitor for DSLR:

I watched all the reviews of this monitor before purchasing and thought I was making the right selection. I don't think I'd recommend this given the overall offering available and here's why: It is very flimsy. The attachment to the camera is thin plastic (the kind you break easily inside of a camera bag full of gear) and the screen itself is delicate. Mine arrived broken, but you couldn't see the break until you turned it on. As it was it was a shipping impression from the battery that was shipped next to it with foam in between. The cord is only 4-6 inches long, so you have no choice of mounting the screen anywhere else except on the camera. Those are the cons... the pros are that this is only one of two screens available that work with the 5D Mark ii. No screen shrinkage or blank screen delay when you press the record button. I really wish this company would look into a port for the cord, so that the screen can be mounted anywhere, beef up the plastic, and reinforce the screen. For [$]this is of less value than the other 5D Mark ii compatible screen (Liliput [$]).

Comments about Dot Line SWIVI External Monitor for DSLR:

Great monitor. Used it with my 5D MarkII. Battery lasts as long as the Camera battery. Love the peaking feature. If you have a hard time focusing with your canon this is the perfect tool to solve tht problem. Also the hood that comes with it is excellent unlike flimsy velcro ones.
The only thing is that you really have to make sure you tighen it well to the camera.

The one negative thing is that you cant put a mic on the camera because the frame from the monitor blocks the mic input.

It is very cheaply made and way too bulky to be useful. The resolution on the screen is low making focusing somewhat challenging and then there's the issue of it randomly turning the screen purple and white before needing to be restarted.

The concept of a external monitor using the tripod mount on the dslr is wonderful to me, but this fails to function in a working environment. It is awkward and poorly made.

Bought this before B&H was carrying them. I use it for framing and focus on a Merlin or monopod/pogocam. Biggest issue is getting it tightened down, handled it the same way as the Merlin dove tail plate recommendation, RUBBER (not plastic) electrical tape then tighten. No problems reaching buttons and dials on the 5D2. For the price, a total winner.

This screen works really well with a number of useful features as outlined in the product describtion.Rather light weight too, but feels a bit flimsy. It articulates especially well and the fact that it folds down like a built in screen is a plus. It handles well when attached to the camera, though its hard to get the mounting to the camera tight. My first unit worked about 10 minutes, that's when electronics tend to fail. The quick hassel free exchange from B&H works fine. The replacement came with a rechargeable battery and charger which the first ubit didn't have. Its a cost effective way to get a decent monitor on your DSLR.
