The DiskStation DS411 from Synology is a high-performance, 4-bay NAS backup and server solution for workgroups and offices. It features a fast 1.6 GHz processor, 512 MB of DDR3 RAM, two USB 2.0 ports and a super-fast eSATA connection. For those looking to operate surveillance cams, it offers support for up to twelve IP cams at up to 120 FPS (Frames Per Second).
While no drives are included with the DS411, it supports a max capacity of 16TB with either four 2.5" or 3.5" SATA hard disk or solid state drives. Additionally, this DiskStation can configure drives as a JBOD, RAID 0 or RAID 1, depending on whether you want faster data transfers or more secure data. With the included Gigabit LAN port, you can connect the DiskStation to your router and access it locally on your network. The DiskStation also includes an EZ-Internet Wizard for setting it up from the web. To facilitate ease of use between different operating systems, this DiskStation supports cross-platform file sharing between Ubuntu, Mac and Windows computers. Ever-versatile, this DiskStation can function as a mail server, as it supports Outlook-like Web mail, SMTP, POP3 and IMAP. In addition, the Synology Web Station Virtual Host option allows users to host up to 30 websites on a single DS411. The built-in PHP+MySQL capability allows users to create interactive websites without complicated settings. When it comes to backing up your data, you can save from Windows or Mac computers to the DiskStation. Windows users can use Synology Data Replicator 3 while Mac users can enjoy native Mac OS X Time Machine support. As if that wasn't enough, the DiskStation can function as a variety of different servers, whether you need it to store and stream photos, video, audio or data within your office or over the internet. You can also use it as a server for FTP, Mail, UPnP media devices, printing, iTunes, hosting websites, operating surveillance webcams or downloading bit torrent, http, FTP, NZB or eMule files.| Hardware | |

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS411 4-Bay NAS Server for Workgroups and Offices:
I looked for a NAS for a very long time. This NAS is powerful, quiet and does everything i expect it to do. I use it to store media files and stream them to my media streamers around the house.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS411 4-Bay NAS Server for Workgroups and Offices:
We use it to keep our documents, pictures and media.
Previously, we used an external hard drive that was attached to our "central server", but we ran into problems when two of us were using it.
We haven't run into that problem with the synology & a few hard drives. It's great because I can access the content for any of our computers or mobile devices at home, but also remotely.
Also, we haven't seen any performance degradation when we are streaming content, someone is accessing the web site that we run from the synology & another person is editing pictures.
It was very easy to setup and get going, but surprisingly very quiet even if you are on cool mode.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS411 4-Bay NAS Server for Workgroups and Offices:
This is a nicely engineered product, but in my real-world back ups I didn't see anything close to the Mbps measured by CNET.
First, the good news: the mechanicals are reassuringly solid, and the web interface is very thoughtfully put together. I downloaded the latest software from Synology and didn't bother with the CD-ROM at all. Installation (HW and SW) is straightforward. Example: the default network configuration is dynamic IP (DHCP;) after I configured a static IP in the web interface, the box just reconfigured its interface, and the web page reloads itself at the new address; I didn't even have to type the new address into my browser.
The not-so-good news: CNET measured 279 Mbps write speed for RAID 5. They must be using a raw disk benchmark program. My MacBook Pro backing up to Time Machine averaged 113 Mbps for 2+ hours. (2.66GHz Core i7, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, OS 10.6.8.)
Some caveats: for big backups or moving big data, connect to the NAS via wired Ethernet, not WiFi. Also, if your home network has an older all-in-one WiFi access point/Ethernet switch/router like my Linksys WRT54G, you only have 100 Mbps ("Fast Ethernet") going to the NAS box. To get the max performance, add a Gigabit Ethernet switch. I added a D-Link gigabit Ethernet switch to the network. Comcast -> cable modem -> Linksys -> D-Link -> all wired Ethernet connections. Now all computers in my house including the NAS box can talk to each other at 1000 Mbps. Going over the air is limited to WiFi speeds, and going outside to the world is limited to Comcast speeds.
Another caveat: I had a collection of external USB drives, some for offline storage, some for backups. I attached one of them (Maxtor One Touch 4, 750GB) to the NAS' USB port so that I can access it over the network as well. It works fine but the speed is so slow that I wouldn't want to use it in my normal workflow (copying ~ 3GB of pictures took 16'48", i.e. 23.7 Mbps.)
