The Western Digital 4TB My Book Thunderbolt Duo is a dual-drive storage system with two Thunderbolt ports capable of up to 10 Gb/s data transfer rates. The system supports user-selectable RAID 0 and RAID 1 modes, as well as JBOD modes. Plus, since Thunderbolt ports are bidirectional, they afford high-speed multitasking. You can also daisy chain multiple devices or peripherals using the two Thunderbolt ports for better efficiency and productivity. For added convenience, the drives are user-serviceable and the system comes with the WD Drives Utilities software.

Move Data at Unprecedented Speeds
Video editors and other digital media professionals can do more work in less time thanks to the data transfer speed of the Thunderbolt ports on Western Digital's My Book Thunderbolt Duo. It offers the fastest way to get information to and from your external drive
User-Selectable RAID or JBOD Modes
With the My Book Thunderbolt Duo, you can choose between RAID 0 (striping), RAID 1 (mirroring) and JBOD. RAID 0 offers the performance you need when designing or editing time-sensitive graphic-intensive media files. RAID 1 provides double safe data protection by automatically generating a duplicate copy of your data. JBOD allows you to use this dual-drive storage system as two individual drives and select between HFS+J or ExFAT per disk. It's ideal for running Windows OS on a Mac
Dual Thunderbolt Ports
Daisy chain multiple devices or peripherals such as HD displays, media players, HD media capture and editing systems using the two Thunderbolt ports to achieve maximum workflow efficiency and productivity
High-Speed Multitasking
The revolutionary bidirectional Thunderbolt technology delivers unmatched speed for multitasking while video editing, 3D rendering and completing other graphics intensive projects
User-Serviceable
To replace a drive, just open the case and exchange the existing drive - no tools needed. If you fill up a drive, you can simply remove it and replace it with a fresh drive and begin saving even more of your creative life

Comments about Western Digital 4TB My Book Thunderbolt Duo Dual-Drive Storage System:

Purchased to upgrade from a RAIDed NAS; needed more space and wanted a faster drive too. 2-3 weeks in I'm happy with everything but that wasn't initially the case.

I felt somewhat misled that the only encryption supported out-the-box is encrypted TimeMachine backups. Perhaps I didn't read the documentation closely enough before I purchased; the implication was encryption was more widely supported. HOWEVER, you can easily encrypt the disk in OS X with a few commands in Terminal. Now I have an encrypted mirrored drive and I've tested pulling one drive out for a while and having it rebuild when added back. It takes a fair amount of time to rebuild, and the kicker is you can't disconnect your Mac while that happens, but hopefully you only ever hit this situation in a dire emergency. IMHO the safety of not losing your data outweighs the hours it takes to re-sync a drive but I could see that's a problem for laptop users who need to travel with their Mac every day (but then why wouldn't you buy a server and run the drive off that...)

Last point, the WD software feels really lightweight but I've gradually realized that's because many operations are handled through Apple's Disk Utility. Unfortunately the WD documentation doesn't always make that clear, for instance in the middle of discussing operations made in the WD software there will be an instruction saying something like "Bring the disk back online in the Disk Manager option". It's not at all clear that's something you do in Apple's Disk Utility not in the WD software.

All in all I'm happy with my purchase although others may not want to make the tweaks I did for encryption.

Comments about Western Digital 4TB My Book Thunderbolt Duo Dual-Drive Storage System:

I acquired this product for one purpose and one purpose only -> To import raw video files for editing and not having the import footage backed up by Time Machine on my user drive.

Although Time Machine can "exclude" certain files and folders from backup and I'm not too concerned about raw imported video, I still would like to be able to keep the footage as long as needed with a backup option and setting this drive to RAID 1 allows me to do just that.

              Pros:
              Fast
              Quiet
              Reliable

              Cons:
No aftermarket icon (.icns) file available from WD so an Orange generic thunderbolt logo appears. (Can't find one online anywhere)

Comments about Western Digital 4TB My Book Thunderbolt Duo Dual-Drive Storage System:

After receiving my duo, it did not pass all the integrity tests and would not format as two separate drives. I called technical support and got a person with no knowledge who constantly was referring to his supervisor. I asked to speak to the supervisor and was told the best thing they could do was refer me to tier 2 technical support who "might call me back on Monday" (I called on Friday). I insisted in talking to the supervision and was then abruptly transferred to an American at corporate headquarters. Thing went rapidly uphill after that. It seems one of the disks became unseated during shipping and after I removed both disks and reinstalled them the unit started to work as advertised. The unit is fast and QUIET. I think I will like it (time will tell) but am a little hesitant because of the bad start. Western Digital should be ashamed of outsourcing primary technical support to such a bad outfit. KEEP IT HOME LIKE APPLE DOES.

Unpacked it and was immediately pleased with the design. I hooked it up with the Thunderbolt cable to an iMac 27"(3.4gHz,16gigram,1tb HD). It came online without further ado and has worked flawlessly since. I use it for video editing with FCP X using XDCAM HD footage. The increase in speed from using a macPro(2.4gz,8gig ram,250MB) with dual external G-Raid drives was rather dramatic. It makes video editing a pleasure. It also makes handling Aperture and Lightroom 4 photo programs a nice experience.
