I bought this product based on some images of users handholding the ballhead as a "gun" for video use, and also the expectation that it could provide smooth video moves. Instead, the pressing of the trigger requires significant effort, and the movement of the ballhead is not as smooth as I would have liked.
If you want to use this as a quick-movement ballhead for things like nature photography, it should work very well. It lets you make much quicker adjustments than a traditional photography head. It's built very well and should have no problem supporting its stated weight, possibly more. One con for the photo side is the limit of an 8 degree vertical movement.

Just wanted to comment for other users who may have envisioned using this for video purposes.

Comments about Vanguard GH-200 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

Strong and heavy, but this ballhead is not for everyone. You need strong hands and gorilla grip to operate this pistol ballhead. My hands were very sore after trying it for short period of time so I returned the item and bought a MH054 Manfrotto Magnesium Ballhead with Q2 release plate.

Comments about Vanguard GH-200 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

The grip takes some getting used to and if you have small hands, I do not, it might be annoying. Over all I love it. One problem. It has an arca swiss mount, which is great except that Vanguard has a little pin they have installed to keep your camera from falling off if you are releasing the plate while the camera is in a downward direction. Their mounting plate is maybe a millimeter smaller than the standard plate so it works fine. It actually has to tilt off the mount, but a normal arca swiss plate needs to slide on and then it would get hung up on the mount by the pin. I bought a strap that has an arcs swiss mount, so I will have to machine the plate to make it fit. I alerted vanguard, they didn't seem too concerned, but said they would pass on to their design team.

the GH200 is as solid as a rock, it holds my canon T1i with my 500mm lens with no problems! I love everything about this stout tripod head, the grip is a little tight when you pull the trigger but i am glad it like that so it cannot accidentally be moved

Comments about Vanguard GH-200 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

I must have tried 20 different quick-release grip ballheads from several companies. This is my favorite. I mainly shoot with a 70-200/f2.8 zoom (sometimes a 2x TC attached) and that is a weighty combination. This ballhead lets me very quickly adjust where I am pointing with a simple squeeze of the grip and it's rock solid. The built-in levels are a great help too. Panning is smooth and effort free. Outstanding construction and very rugged. I have tried on both my monopod as well as my tripod. For the most part, I keep it mounted on my tripod and use the universal mount plate to quickly mount and dismount the camera/lens combo.

I use this with a canon T1i and it has NO problems handling any of my lens' from a 50mm 1.8 to a 75 to 300mm zoom lens and even a 500mm lens it can handle them all with ease. It is VERY WELL CONSTRUCTED, I have a feeling it will last me for years to come!

Comments about Vanguard GH-200 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

I own several tripods with various heads. This is by far the quickest easiest solution to setting the camera to capture shots as they occur. I used this in 20 degree weather where time matters for comfort in addition to the shot. Simple operation with multi-dimensional angles. I use this head on a carbon fiber tripod without defeating the weight issue. This head is big and heavy requiring a sturdy tripod (perhaps carbon fiber). I've used this head with heavy lenses to include a Nikon 70-200 and 80-400. No problem with balance or holding the weight. I've also used it to mount flashes and enjoy the ability to effect angles of light quickly.

Cons include a very firm grip that most females would find uncomfortable at best and unusable at worst. My wife could not compress the pistol grip.

All in all, a great addition to my gear bag.

I wish they had a chance to gradually adjust friction, rather than only having two positions. But it works perfectly on the field.

Comments about Vanguard GH-200 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

This is my third Vanguard ballhead and just like the previous ones, it is well made. This may tend to make it a little heavier than other brands but I will take it every time. The locking levers are well placed and easy to use. It has two convenient levels. The quick release place easily attaches to the camera and to the ball head itself. It has a locking system so that is will not accidently slide off the ballhead once the camera attached. You have to loosen the knob in order to seperate the camera and ballhead. There are several minor reasons I gave it a four. It takes quite a lot to squeeze the handle grip in order to move your camera. It has a clicking sound when you do panorama shots which I like very much, but can bearly be heard. And there are no tightening adjustments on the ball-head itself. But overall it is a very well made and easy to use ballhead.I am currently using it on a Rocketfich Carbon Tripod. I am using it with a Nikon D300s and Nikkor 300mm f/4.(Sometimes a TC14e attached to the lense)

Comments about Vanguard GH-200 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

A great design though it takes a strong hand to use it. When following birds around it is great until you have to tilt the camera backwards then this ballhead fails slightly.

Comments about Vanguard GH-200 Pistol-Grip Ball Head:

I ordered the GH-200 Pistol-Grip the day it became available. So far I'm pretty pleased with the product.
I've been using this pistol grip with a Sigma 50-500 zoom lens on a Canon 7D with equipped with battery grip.
This combination of gear pushes the GH-200 to it's recommended weight capacity of 13.22 lbs. I've found that once you get used to using the head that it's strong point is speed. Once I see my target I just squeeze that grip ...And Bang ! I'm on it.

Rotation of the handle makes it easy to point the lens in any direction.
All in all I say this is a good value .
