This is a well-built tripod with lots of great features. I bought it mostly for its fluid-head, which works well. The mechanisms for mounting the camera (base plate and associated plate on top of tripod) felt secure, and were extremely easy to use. As I was setting it up I put down the instructions and figured this part out myself in under 30 seconds. A lock which can be tightened and released allows the camera to be slid back and forth on the top plate in order to center its gravity (useful for those giant L lenses you may have). There are also locks for panning and tilting, if you need to get a perfectly static shot.

My favorite feature is the sort of ball joint on which the entire camera sits. It can be tilted from side to side and forward and back allowing you to get your camera perfect aligned with the horizon (extremely important in video and photography) while the tripod is sitting on a sloped surface. On my other tripod I had to do this by tapping the x- and y- rotation levers individually, which was tedious. The best part is that there's a circular, 360º level (as opposed to one of the unidirectional tube-shaped ones) which allows you to see exactly how you are adjusting the camera with the ball joint. Just line up the bubble with the circle in the middle, and you're off to the races.

The tripod legs extend in two stages and feel stable. They contain another nice feature: spikes that come out from the bottom of the rubber feet to dig into the ground if needed. It also folds neatly and comes with a carrying case. My only gripe is that the strut connecting the tripod legs lower down feels a bit flimsy.

Overall, this is a well-built and extremely intuitive tripod that is useful in a wide variety of situations. It's packed with features that you wouldn't normally expect on a tripod of this price.

Not A True Fluid Head. Backup

Purchased the Magnus Tripod few weeks ago. Serves as a good backup but I found the tripod to be lacking and falls short of being a primary tripod.

    WEIGHT
I read some complaints regarding the weight of it... really people? Lift some weights at the gym, call AARP or call it a wrap if thats the case, because 8lbs is light for a sturdy tripod. True professional fluid head tripods (ball head) can weigh 20+ pounds.

    FUNCTION
Panning... here is where the tripod falls short of a true fluid head. Based on my results, a straight pan or tilt works fine (but still not entirely smooth). The tripod DOES NOT have a TENSION KNOB. I have yet to get a good pan with a diagonal movement to work well. It sticks. Perhaps the head is still new and needs some wear to smooth it out. A true fluid head will give you buttery smooth movement no matter the direction. This one hasn't performed that for me yet. The tripod also has a little PLAY or WIGGLE at the front end of any pan. Don't expect to get smooth film-style movement.

    BUILD
Seems to be built pretty well. Feels solid. The spreader legs... eh... not so hot. These flimsy aluminum things between the legs are the cheapest part. I don't expect them to last long but they currently work well as a lock mechanism for when your tripod folds. The plastic handles etc, so-so. Some kind of hard plastic. One other drawback is that your cannot rotate the handle independently of the arm's lockdown. You have to loosen the whole arm, twist, then lock. Not a biggie but it needs to be improved for quicker and customizable function.

    SUMMARY
It is a good go-between but I only would expect it to last 2-3 years with moderate use. It seems to be the best and only low priced tripod that seems decent in function and quality. Perfect for staters, static frame shots and/or a backup. Not the best panning tripod, some sticking apparent, but gets decent results.

Comments about Magnus VT-4000 Tripod System with Fluid Head:

It is a great tripod, for small and light weight cameras the fluid head is great though! Great if you're shooting with DSLRs, but watch out for putting too much weight on it, it can slip away!

As far as cheap tripods go, this is by far the best. Lightweight, smooth pan/tilt, and the quick release plate is perfect- cork lining, the pin retracts, and you don't need to use a coin to tighten it. Every tripod should use this plate!

When I first got this tripod I wasn't expecting anything much. The main reason I was getting the tripod was because of the mildly heavy body to help with the steadiness of my shots. Oh, but was I in for it when I panned across the set for the first time. Wow, it was even exciting! It was extremely smooth! The whole tripod worked together to create some brilliant images in coordination with my camera. And especially for the price! This is the price of a no-budget filmmaker's camera stand, instead you get a hollywood-style crane. Yes, I am over exaggerating, but the VT-4000 is definitely (in quality) of at least a mid-range budget tripod.

Comments about Magnus VT-4000 Tripod System with Fluid Head:

... this tripod's smooth! Coming from someone who has owned many low-end tripods ($30-$60) over the years,I can say with complete confidence that this tripod blows the others out of the water.

I used to use the low-end ones for doing stop-motion, where the camera was completely still and locked down and any camera movement I wanted was done in post (I used Adobe After Effects). When I started to do video, I realized that those tripods would not give me good looking moving shots. They're great for stationary work, not for panning/tilting.

After searching the interwebs for a while, this tripod seemed like the best option because of the reviews and (quite obviously) the price. Upon opening it I knew that this was a good pick. A very sturdy body, still legs, and most of all: an incredible smooth fluid head, which is what I got it for.

The only thing that could be a con about this tripod is that it can be difficult carrying it around on a shoot all day. It is heavy (a good thing when doing studio work or a shoot where you're not moving place to place) and can be tiresome when trying to carry it place to place.

If you are looking for a tripod that will give you beautiful panning/tilting without breaking the bank, then this product is definitely for you. I highly recommend it!

                        PROS:
                        * solid construction - feels indestructible
                        * intelligent design: Easy camera on/off; level indicator; convenient and quick setup with simple leg extension; fluid head makes for professional-like panning; tension adjustment.
                        * very reasonable price for what you get

                        CONS:
                        * it's a bit heavy, not great for hiking up Mt. Everest
                        * needs a vertical adjustment once set up; vertical adjustment is via leg extension only

Otherwise, they thought of everything and delivered.

I bought this tripod for a quick last minute film shoot I had to do. I performed very well. The fluid had proved to be very smooth, and the steardy legs were very stable. I highly recommend this tripod to any who has a small DV Camera or small DSLR.

Its a great lightweight pod easy to transport and carry. The leg extension action makes it easy and fast to get set up. The fluid head is great. I would like to be able to extend the legs higher.

Comments about Magnus VT-4000 Tripod System with Fluid Head:

We use two of these on an almost daily basis for a major rental company doing promo videos and 'how to' short films for the field. They are great work horses. Very smooth pans and tilts. I would recommend to anyone who needs an affordable yet sturdy platform for video production on a professional level. Though make sure you latch each leg securly, because a partially locked leg clamp WILL give way! We found that out the hard way.

Not great for on location use though. I would prefer more adjustability in the legs to spread wider to get those low shots or for more stability in high wind condionts. I use an old Velbon sgb-32 for that kind of work.
I would highly recommend a lighter carbon fiber video tripod for more mobile shoots.

But if your work requires less moving around and is indoors this is a great tripod. But it is very heavy especially with a camera atop it.

The tripod is very solid and stable on the ground. It is a very smooth movement, that's so important for good video. Little bit heavy, but that is part of what it is made this tripod excellent performance for video.

I use this tripod to record video of music recitals in concert halls. I was looking for a tripod that was very smooth in tilt and pan because I have to shoot at high zoom amounts becasue I'm in the back of the concert hall and still want to be able to get some close-ups and follow the musical 'action'. This tripod very much fits the bill. I was hoping to not spend too much more than $200 so I was pleasantly surprised when it came it at [$] less!My only comment about it (this only has to do with me not noticing) is that it doesn't go up as high as some other tripods I have. Sometimes I need the camera well above my head in case the artist gets a standing ovation. Maximum height is about 6'.It's a little difficult to get the carry bag zipped all the way and I wish there was a way to carry the tightening wrenches around with the actual tripod or case instead of being loose where they might get misplaced...Overall though, 5 stars for the actual unit, couldn't be happier.Bill....
