The Magnus VT-300 Video Tripod with Fluid Head is a lightweight and portable tripod system for shooting stable videos with DSLRs, small camcorders, and any other cameras up to 15 lb.

A built-in fluid effect video head pans a full 360°, tilts up and down, and features independent pan and tilt locks for fixed-position shots. A pan bar and a snap-in quick-release camera plate are included. The quick-release plate features a 1/4" camera mounting screw, a registration pin, and an anti-skid mounting surface.

A center-column raises or lowers at the turn of a hand crank to let you fine-tune a height without adjusting the tripod legs. A mid-level spreader keeps the legs steady when you adjust the tripod, and it locks to keep the legs secure once you've set the tripod in position. Both the center-column and spreader are integrated. The maximum height of the tripod with the center-column raised is 64.3".

The tripod legs extend at two leg stages at the release of flip-locks. The legs feature replaceable rubber feet that provide grip on hard or slippery surfaces. An internal bubble level will help you position the tripod evenly on uneven ground. A carry case with a shoulder strap is included and will let you conveniently carry the tripod over your shoulder when you're travelling about.

When I visited the B&H store, before selecting the Pearstone VT-2100, I was initially looking for a self-standing monopod. I was looking for the portability of a monopod, but with the self-standing stability and fluid motion of a tripod. I checked out one of the monopods with attachable legs, but it lacked the rock-steady stability for shooting with a camcorder that I was looking for. There may have been better self-standing monopods that I didn't look at, but considering I was looking for these attributes in a product for less than $200 and, based on reviews I read of self-standing monopods, I figured my expectations were unrealistic.

Since I was in a hurry, I decided instead to go with next option: a lightweight fluid-head tripod with a mid-level spreader. The salesman showed me a tripod that was built like a tank. It was able to support his weight and had very sturdy construction, but it lacked a mid-level spreader. My 25-year old Bogen tripod has similar attributes: sturdy construction, but it also lacks a mid-level spreader. The spreader was important to me, because I want to be able to lock the tripod legs in a narrow spread-pattern for use in confined shooting environments.

I looked at other tripods in a similar price range as the VT-2100. I believe those other tripods had more durable construction than the VT-2100, but I wasn't satisfied with their fluidness when tilting or panning. I recalled reading positive reviews on B&H for the Pearstone, so I asked the salesman to show me this tripod and I went with it.

Here are the positives and negatives of the Pearstone VT-2100:

    • Smooth-as-butter tilting and panning motion, but sometimes you can hear the gel (which enables the fluid-effect) make a crackling sound. It is not loud and it is not constant, but it is sometimes audible, especially during fast movements.
    • A mid-level spreader, which permits you to lock the legs evenly in place, but be careful how tight you lock them, because the fasteners seem very easy to strip. I can't lock the legs in place as tight as I would prefer without the risk of stripping them.
    • A quick-release plate.
    • The gear-driven center column permits you to adjust the height. However, even though the tripod is rated for a 15 pounds load, I had considerably less weight than that loaded on the tripod and I still had trouble keeping the column in a raised position. I had to keep my hand on the crank to prevent the column (which is made of seemingly-fragile plastic) from lowering itself.

I like the features and fluidness of this tripod, but I don't have confidence in its durability, especially for the long-term. Although the legs are made of aluminum, the head is almost entirely made of plastic. The center column is also plastic and it appears to be even more fragile than the head. Its construction is a dual-edged sword: the plastic components make it fragile, but it also makes it lightweight and less cumbersome to lug around.

Despite its fragility, the Pearstone VT-2100 does offer impressive performance and features at a budget-price level. Just treat it with TLC.

As a media instructor, I was looking for a reasonably priced tripod with a fluid head. I bought a few of these and was pleased with them so I got some more. 15 in total. After 9 months of use by high school students, 3 of the tripods have broken- all in the same place. The point where the top of the leg connects to the tripod. There's a kind of knuckle joint there and the leg pivots on a small nub of plastic- this is the bit that sheared off.

A metal pin at such a crucial pivot point would make a lot more sense.

I was going back and forth between this one and the VT-4000 model. I decided on this one and although I am sure Id love the other model. This fits my needs well, the fluid head is everything you could expect, my rig is light so I am not able to gauge the weight but at 7 pounds I see no issues.

Comments about Magnus VT-300 Video Tripod with Fluid Head:

A couple years ago I was looking for a tripod at the same price point as the VT-300 currently falls into. I never did buy one because I wasn't completely sold on the quality of those. This time I NEEDED a tripod but I still didn't want to move up to the next price tier.

The VT-300 claims a fluid head and it is really smooth for panning and tilting. I am very impressed. It seems over the past couple years the quality of tripods has increased. Loosening and tightening the head movement is easy--the knobs are adequately sized. It has a lot of height with the legs fully extended and the center column fully raised.

There are a few drawbacks, though, none of which are deal-breakers. With the tilt head fully loosened, it is still fairly stiff. That's not necessarily bad, but even when you loosen it, it feels like you still need to loosen it more. It also comes with a set of extra rubber feet. That's great if you lost a foot or two for some reason, despite the fact the feet are on quite solidly. But I would prefer to have a set of feet with spikes (on my old tripod you could screw the foot upwards to reveal a spike).

This tripod is very good. Before I bought it, I use it at work since we have the same. It is very stable and I am using it with Nikon D7000 and the lens is 28 - 300 mm. I was looking for a strong tripod to be able to hold the camera and the lens when it is fully opened and I did not want to spend a lot of money.I do recommend it.

I bought this tripod to use for 2 camera setups for the B camera. For that it is great. The head has a nice fluid motion and tripod height is good. It holds plenty of weight. It is light and easy to pack.

There are a lot of plastic parts, but for the price this is expected and so far I have not had any problems with durability.

I am a film student and needed a good solid tripod to bring along with me on shoots. I just used this tripod for the first time this weekend and it worked perfectly. The fluid head moved quickly and was not jerky at all. Adjusting the pan and tilt nobs was easy to do. Overall I really enjoyed this tripod. I am even looking into getting a smaller version of it (Magnus VT-100) for travel as it is smaller and more compact.

This tripod delivers a smooth fluid pan and tilt. The body is fairly strong and doesn't wobble. The only thing I am not crazy about is the plate. It's hard to remove and takes too much time. I would recommend getting a quick release to go with this. If you're looking for something affordable that will still give you a smooth professional movement than this tripod is for you!

I use this with an IPad to film Football games. It works great. If you use a small camera, this is ideal. I would upgrade if you want to use a big camera.

Easy to set up and take down, great feet, and better than expected action on pans and tilts. Very fluid--better than some more expensive tripods I've used. The parts are primarily plastic, but seem sturdy enough and things click into place nicely.

This is actually the 2nd VT-300 tripod I purchased, as I like to have a 2nd camera at many shoots. I either put a BMCC or a Canon 70D on this. The fluid head makes panning pretty smooth. A tripod is a must-have for any video or photo work, and the Magnus VT-300 is a good buy.

Perfectly reasonable for the price. Is light but feels a little flimsy bc of it. Head moves smoothly. Ball-pivot feet are a nice touch

I use this tripod for a crane we bought that our other tripods can't hold. This product is very sturdy and I haven't had problems with it yet. I have used it close to 100 different times and each time I enjoy it more. The only, not so good thing about it is the crank handle. It's a pain for me because I am not used to a tripod like that however it hasn't broke yet so I am happy. One more small thing but it is something you have to just practice is when you go up and down while using a crane it tends to stick sometimes, you just have to make sure the nobs are loose enough for it to move the way you want. It takes a minute but i have it down packed on how to use it.
