I bought the Nikon S30 looking for a family camera that can be used by children and for taking pictures around water.
The BIG problem with this camera are indoor photos. My iphone 4 takes better pictures once you get into a room. The images have lot of noise and a plastic look when you are not in perfect sun light.
Even outside, you can't force flash for fill-in flash when needed.
The VR implementation is very poor, even useless with videos. They come out jerky.
The ergonomics for kids may be the best part of this camera. I haven't take the camera under water, but don't expect good pictures when the light isn't perfect.
I was expecting a little more from Nikon. They have the technology and the know how to make better cameras, but they just lost a good oportunity to attract new comers to their brand.

Camera was purchased to serve as a waterproof camera for a trip. As seen in other reviews, the camera does not produce the best images, but it works. (smart phone camera comparison seems appropriate)
Simple to use at a decent price. Buttons easy for anyone to use. Fun camera for casual user. Stayed dry in shallow water. Better option than having to worry about expensive camera, or than dealing with waterproof case on vacation.

I took this camera on a 20-day raft trip in the Grand Canyon. It was the only camera I had with me and it performed beautifully. It was mounted on my raft as we went through rapids and took great videos. It was submerged in at least 9 feet of water several times and continued to work perfectly. Lithium batteries lasted longer than I expected, and with a large memory card, I had more than enough room for nearly 1,000 photos and 15-20 two - four minute videos. The picture quality wasn't as good as my DSLR, but that one, an older Konika-Minolta, is much bulkier, heavier and not waterproof. AS long as I stayed with the optical zoom, not digital, picture quality was good. This was the perfect camera for my rafting adventure. I highly recommend it.

I bought this camera to take photos on our boat. I have three other Nikon cameras, all SLRs which take better photos but I would never dream of taking any of them snorkeling or swimming as I do this coolpix. It takes name better photo than a disposable waterproof camera and for the money, it's a much better value than a disposable post and shoot. I would definitely buy one for anyone with a pool or boat.

Bought this for my daughter as a gift on her fourth birthday since she loves taking pictures but the 'kids' cameras are more toy than they are camera. This one is perfect for her - the size fits her hands well, and the limited number and size of the buttons make it easy for her to use. Nice, large LCD, waterproof, shockproof, etc are nice features and helps ensure durability and ease of use. The picture quality is by far the best of any camera she's had this far, and she loves it being pink. I also appreciate the locking batter/memory card door - a nice feature that reaolved and issue she's had in the past with non-locking doors coming open regularly. The only thing I wish it had were a real viewfinder, but that's certainly no deal breaker for a four year old.

This camera was bought for my mother who needed a very simple and durable camera. It takes great pictures for such a basic camera but it may be too stripped down of features for some people. I would recommend this for trips outdoors since it is both water and dirt proof; also for those with young children that may be too playful with your other expensive digital cameras. I should mention that it does require AA's batteries to operate so no recharging here unless you have rechargeable AA's.

Instead of buying this camera, dig a hole and throw your money in it. You'll get more value for your money.I bought this camera specifically to take underwater pictures on a once in a lifetime snorkelling trip to Western Australia. The camera flooded with water after using it twice, well within its limitations of depth. So I spent a week snorkelling the most fantastic reef system I have ever seen, and have not a single picture of the incredible creatures and coral I saw (camera failed before I got there). Nikon customer service is a joke, they don't care. Fortunately I bought it through a chain and they refunded my money without question. I will never buy a Nikon product again, because I travel a lot and my pictures are my souvenirs, and you can't trust Nikon product quality, in my experience. Deserves 0 stars.

Bought this camera for my trip to Hawaii and was very disappointed. Out of the water it produced a thin red line down the left side of most photos. Dropped once from about 3 ft. and it shattered the front lens. Had to buy a disposable water camera. Spend a bit more, you get what you pay for with this camera.
