The Monarch 5 10x42 (Green) from Nikon features Nikon's proprietary lead and arsenic free optical-glass formula, known as Eco-Glass which is used for all lenses and prisms in this fine Monarch binocular. All of the air-to-glass surfaces are fully multicoated to ensure maximum light transmission, sharpness, and contrast. The roof prisms are finished with a dielectric coating that enhances the efficiency of the optical system to near perfection.
This easy-to-handle optic is fully waterproof and fogproof, and a tactile rubberized exterior ensures a secure grip at all times. The centered focus knob is fast, accurate, and easy to use. A pair of multi-setting click-stop eyecups and a notable 15.5mm of eye relief allow you to tailor the binocular to suit your needs - whether you're wearing glasses or not.

I have owned several less expensive binoculars over the years. These include the wonderful Swift- Ultra-light (8X42), and the larger Nikon (10X50) Adventurer, both very good glasses. However after looking thought these Monarch 5 binoculars I was absolutely stunned by the brightness and clarity of this instrument. Using new technological advances Nikon has produced a moderately priced binocular that can easily compete with the very best at one third the price. So if you like us, are spending more of your time enjoying our great American wilderness, and seeing nature close up these binoculars should definitely be part of your gear. Congratulations' to Nikon, and to the older guy would works in the optics department at B&H who gave me a "heads up" after I made my decision.

Un-glamorous but trusty binoculars.
I don't feel I'm missing anything while bird watching with these binoculars. Optically, no complaints. Center of field is clear. Depth of field is shallow but the focus knob is fast and smooth....Read complete review
I don't feel I'm missing anything while bird watching with these binoculars. Optically, no complaints. Center of field is clear. Depth of field is shallow but the focus knob is fast and smooth.
Build quality is un-loveable. Lense caps are better than the ones Nikon was using a few years ago, but I wish there were aftermarket options. Rubber skin provides a good grip, yet gaps between the rubber and the housing beneath cause the binoculars to feel squishy.
With that said I am not even close to returning them. They are still a good value for me till the day I win the lotto and buy three pairs of alfa binoculars.

Comments about Nikon Monarch 5 10x42 Binocular (Green):
I've been a birder for 33 years, and having Leica 10x40's for my own use, I am VERY Picky about what I get my husband, who is not a birder...
I bought these, as we are going to Central America. He was surprised, and very happy with the quality. I've owned Nikon products for years, and these are a huge bargain. Not great for eyeglass wearers, but it is easy enough to adjust for one persons use. I was worried he would be disappointed, by comparing them to my Leica 10x40. Not so, they weigh much less, and he did not want to spend much money.
I spent 6 months deciding which pair to buy. It was definitely worth the time.
IF, you are looking for great quality and a great price, look no further....This is what you need.

Bought these for and gave to my little old lady as a anniversary gift. She loves them and uses them often on hikes and bird-watching field trips. Heck, I even use them and they are sharp, lightweight and out perform other brands costing much more. independent adjustments for eyepiece is a big plus. Did lots of research before I bought and receive a double bonus because they were on sale @ B&H. Hey take a bow you guys are great!

Great for nature observation Easy to carry and hold steadilySharper, brighter, and contrastier than my TrailblazersThe objective lens caps do not appear to be as easy to loose as some others suggest, but are a little ungainly to use.B&H has the description wrong though...The ones they sent me are green (like the picture on the site), not black (as advertised), and they can take the (better)rigid tripod adaptor for [$] as opposed to the universal [$]adaptor they suggest.

Comments about Nikon Monarch 5 10x42 Binocular (Green):
Watch birds from indoors and out. We can focus much more closely with these binos than our older ones. The field of view is larger than our 8 by 34 and the clarity and detail is amazing. These were the top recommended in the price range by the pros at The Cornell Ornithology Lab and I'm glad I did the research. Much better binos than the ones several of our friends bought at a local birding store that cost $50 more. Two slight drawbacks -- heavier than the ultralight 8 by 34s and the eyecups are a little harder on the eyes. I'm sure we'll get used to that. We kayak and walk on the beach a lot and these are waterproof, which is a huge deal.

Love these binoculars. We have 2 pair of them, his and hers. We use them for birding while kayaking. My boyfriend wears glasses and I do not, I love the ability to exstend the eyecups for those of use who do not wear glasses for the perfect fit! Water and fog proof is a must on the kayak. Very comfortable to hold and still lightweight. After years of using lower end binoculars, I didn't know what I was missing! I accidentally order the wrong pair on line on a Saturday night and with a quick call the next day they were open they got me switched up to the pair I wanted! Only down side is the eyecup cover is next to useless! Wonderful product and service! Thank you!

If you're looking to buy a pair of binoculars around this price range, these are the ones to get.
The feel good in the hand, the focus mechanism is just right, not too stiff, not too loose.
Optically they are very good, perfect for bird watching and walking.
If you spend a lot (think Swarovski, Leica etc) more you might get slightly better quality, but as far as value goes these are hard to beat.

Bought these a couple of weeks ago. Immediately used them to watch my son swim in a open water swimming race in the ocean. The image was crisp, clear and bright. I was able to make which swimmer he was from the beach, at a time when his pack was swimming a couple of hundred yards off shore. I got in some quality bird watching at the same time. Once I figured out how to deal most effectively with the lens caps I had no issues and would recommend these highly.
