The Canon PowerShot SX260 HS Digital Camera is a stunningly powerful point-and-shoot with a number of useful features. To start, the SX260 has a 12.1Mp high-sensitivity CMOS sensor along with the company's DIGIC 5 Image Processor. Together, these two comprise Canon's HS SYSTEM for great looking images, even when shot in low-light. In addition to capturing quality stills, the SX260 also records full HD 1080p video with stereo sound. The camera also boasts a dedicated movie button for one-touch recording.

Helping to cull all that beautiful footage would be the 25mm wide-angle lens with optical image stabilization and 20x optical zoom. Auto features like Smart AUTO, Intelligent IS, and FACE ID all help you to get great shots without the guesswork. The built-in GPS tracker helps you to recall images by location for geo-tagging or simply for storage. Other features include Movie Digest - for a day's worth of video clips - and High-Speed Burst HD for continuous capture up to 10 frames, and Super Slow Motion for slow motion playback.

Ultra-Slim Camera with Powerful 20x Optical Zoom, Optical Image Stabilization & 25mm Wide-Angle Lens
At just over 1 1/4 inches thick, the PowerShot SX260 HS is an ultra-slim digital camera with a powerful 20x Optical Zoom. But because its lens embodies the quality and legacy of Genuine Canon Optics, its advantages go far beyond making the camera slim enough to slip in your pocket and carry anywhere. With a range of 25-500mm (35mm equivalent), the lens gives you the power to capture the full breadth of scenes, with details you've never captured before. Images are bright and vivid with spectacular clarity thanks to Optical Image Stabilization
Optical Image Stabilizer
Handheld shooting can often lead to camera shake, making photos and videos blurry. Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer is a sophisticated system that uses lens-shift technology to correct for unwanted camera movement. It makes handheld photography more practical, providing excellent image quality in many difficult shooting situations: outdoors at dusk, inside without a flash, and even at the telephoto end of the zoom range without a tripod. For photos, it enables shooting at slower shutter speeds, accommodating more low-light shooting situations than ever before without having to boost ISO sensitivity. With camera shake and vibration reduced, you get a sharper, steadier image. And because it is an optical system, there is none of the image degradation typical with electronic image stabilizers
UA Lens Technology
Pioneered by Canon, UA Lens technology makes possible compact lenses with remarkable optical performance. By using molded glass with an ultra-high refractive index in aspherical lens elements, Canon has succeeded in reducing lens size while significantly reducing image aberrations. Another stellar example of cutting-edge Canon optics, UA Lens technology helps make PowerShot digital cameras pocket-friendly and capable of astounding image quality
Canon HS SYSTEM
The Canon HS SYSTEM lets you take bright, clear photos in an even wider range of shooting situations. Beautiful low-light shots are possible with minimal noise and maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas. The system is the result of two technologies brought together in PowerShot cameras: a high-sensitivity imaging sensor, which is able to capture more light; and the DIGIC 5 Image Processor, which actively reduces noise with high-speed image processing. The 12.1 megapixel Canon CMOS sensor in the PowerShot SX260 HS incorporates advanced light reception technology that enhances sensitivity. The DIGIC 5 Image Processor provides a major boost in noise reduction, expanding the usable ISO range to an amazing high of ISO 3200. The Canon HS SYSTEM thus lets you use higher shutter speeds to capture clearer images with reduced noise and blur
Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor
The latest-generation Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor brings phenomenal increases in processing speed and power. Improved chip architecture and algorithms deliver greatly expanded functionality with further refinement in image quality. Improved noise reduction produces clearer images when shooting in low light at high ISO speeds. Enhanced i-Contrast performance adjusts differences between light and dark areas to achieve even more natural-looking results. The faster processing speed also results in faster continuous shooting capability while maintaining full image quality. The DIGIC 5 Image Processor also makes possible a new, highly advanced automatic white balance system. Whereas conventional white balance makes an overall adjustment based on a single type of light source, the new Canon Multi-Area White Balance analyzes several areas of the image to determine whether different adjustments are needed, for example, for the main subject and the background
Canon Full HD Video Advantage
In addition to the Canon HS SYSTEM, the combination of the advanced CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 Image Processor in the PowerShot SX260 HS makes it possible to shoot crisp, clear high definition video. Imagine the fun and excitement of being able to shoot spectacular 1080p Full HD video with stereo sound that you can later watch on your HDTV or download to your computer to share with family and friends. In addition to being able to shoot Full HD 1080p video at 24 frames per second, the PowerShot SX260 HS can also shoot 720p HD video at 30 frames per second
Dedicated Movie Button, Wind Filter Feature and Optical Zoom for Easy Video Capture
It's never been easier to shoot videos with a PowerShot digital camera. The PowerShot SX260 HS has a dedicated movie button that lets you start and stop recording instantly. There is no need to go through layers of menus or operate switches or dials to switch to and from video recording mode. The camera is always ready to shoot stills or video whenever you want. The PowerShot SX260 HS also incorporates an electronic wind filter, which suppresses wind noise that can muffle or distort the sound. And unlike less sophisticated point-and-shoot cameras, the PowerShot SX260 HS lets you use the full range of optical zoom when you're shooting a video
HDTV Playback via HDMI Output and CEC
It's easy to enjoy and share the videos you shoot with the PowerShot SX260 HS. Simply connect its HDMI terminal to your HDTV using an HDMI cable. And because the PowerShot SX260 HS supports HDMI-CEC technology, you'll be able to control the playback of your images and videos on any CEC-enabled HDTV using the TV's remote control. (CEC - Consumer Electronic Control - is part of the HDMI specification, enabling components in a system to communicate with one another)
iFrame
With the PowerShot SX260 HS, you can also shoot video in the Apple iFrame format, which is a computer-friendly standard that speeds up importing and editing of videos. It keeps file sizes small, making it more convenient to upload or e-mail high-quality videos. The iFrame format enjoys native support in compatible Mac and Windows video applications, making it unnecessary to perform time-consuming and often quality-degrading conversions
Smart AUTO
Smart AUTO for the PowerShot SX260 HS has been significantly expanded, making it easier than ever to capture the sharp, bright, colorful images - and videos - you're looking for. By assessing various factors in both the background and the subject, the system recognizes 58 predefined shooting situations and automatically selects the camera settings that will yield the best possible results. Simply frame the shot you want, and in dozens of common or challenging scenarios the camera takes care of the rest. Hard-to-capture shots such as moving subjects, night scenes, backlit subjects, and landscapes at evening or on a bright snowy day are instantly and effortlessly captured as ?keeper? shots. Smart AUTO makes the PowerShot SX260 HS ideal for capturing excellent quality still images and video on the go

Face ID
Face ID is one of the most advanced and exciting new features of the PowerShot SX260 HS, giving you an easy way to improve every shot of the people you love. Simply take a picture of up to 12 faces you would like the camera to register, then enter names and ages. Once a person is registered, the camera will pick him or her out of a group (even against a busy background) and adjust focus and exposure to his or her face, even recognizing faces in profile. Face ID is particularly great for shots of babies and children. The system can pick your baby out of a group of children, focus on your baby when pictured with an adult, and capture her best smile by taking three successive images when the smile is detected. The flash is even disabled so as not to startle the baby and interrupt the moment. Older children in motion are tracked, with focus and exposure continually adjusted with Servo AF; with one shutter press three successive images are captured so the best shot is never missed. And because you'll identify each face you register, Face ID makes it easy to search images by name
Intelligent IS
The latest advance in Canon Optical Image Stabilization technology, Intelligent IS analyzes camera movement and applies the best shake correction method for the shooting situation. For stills, the system automatically selects among Normal, Panning, Macro (Hybrid) and Tripod IS modes. When shooting video, the system automatically selects among Dynamic, Powered, Macro and Tripod IS modes. With Intelligent IS, you can concentrate on image capture, letting the camera make the most effective IS settings to assure the steadiest possible image

Normal:
Corrects for a wide range of camera movement when shooting stills

Panning:
Panning motion is detected so that IS does not interfere with desired camera movement

Macro (Hybrid):
Corrects for shift-type camera shake, which typically occurs in macro shooting

Dynamic:
Effective for video shooting at wide-angle focal lengths, eliminating the unwanted shaking that typically occurs while walking

Powered:
Compensates for hand movement when shooting video at the telephoto end of the zoom range, where camera shake is magnified

Tripod:
When tripod use is detected, the Image Stabilizer is stopped because it is not needed

GPS Technology
The PowerShot SX260 HS digital camera is equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS)* technology. Now you can travel the world and let the camera automatically record the locations and local times of your stills and videos. The camera can also use the GPS unit to automatically set the exact time. You can maximize the usefulness of the GPS feature by using the special bundled Map Utility software that makes it fun to share the memories of your world adventures. In addition to displaying all your photos' locations on a world map, the camera's GPS system can also track your route from photo to photo - a great way to visualize each trip! You can also create and share custom maps and personal mini-travel guides with friends and family members
High-Speed Burst HQ
Utilizing the increased processing speed and power of the new Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor, High-Speed Burst HQ makes it possible to capture fast action stills at full resolution during continuous shooting. The results are exceptionally high-quality images recorded in rapid sequence. In this mode, the PowerShot SX260 HS can capture a maximum of 10 shots in a single burst
720p Movie Digest
With the PowerShot SX260 HS digital camera, capturing trips and special occasions with a high-quality video "highlights reel" is as easy as switching on the Movie Digest feature. When activated, the feature automatically records the four seconds before each still shot as video, then auto-edits them into a short movie. Played back together, the video clips capture the mood and ambiance of special days in a way that's completely different from still images, both documenting the creation of still images and providing a unique stand-alone memory preserver. New with the PowerShot SX260 HS, the video is captured in 720p high definition so that it looks smooth and beautifully detailed when played back on your HDTV. With bundled software ImageBrowser EX, you can easily delete any scenes you don't want

I have a 40D Canon and 60D and about 4 "L" seriese lenses up to the 2.8 70-200 zoom (heavy). I have all the big boy stuff for Senior Portraits, weddings, etc. But sometimes you want to travel light (Disneyland, family outings, bike rides with kids, car trips) and I don't need to publish a photo so something less than "L" glass will suffice. Also when I go birding sometimes I carry binoculars and don't want to carry a big lens/SLR. So I tried an Elph, gave it to my wife. The quality was just OK and the zoom was only 105mm. I used to have the G10 which I LOVED but after many climbing trips it broke down. The image quality on this PS260 is better than the Elph and just a shade less than the G10 (or the same?), BUT the real reason to get this baby is the freakin' zoom!!! It is as good as I hoped. I have used it in daylight hours up to the full 500mm and it gets me in there close! You'll have to practice ways to hold it still (I press it against the side of my nose). The image quality is Good/Great (my scale = poor, OK, Good, Great, Awesome). Low light isn't its forte. For a travel camera, and family prints, it is the best camera I have yet to purchase in the point and shoot category and I have had about 6 in the last 10 years. I take it birding and use it like a pair of binoculars. Even the digital zoom leaves me with good images and I used to never use the digital zoom because of quality loss. This camera fits into my pocket, focuses reasonably fast and did I say how awesome the zoom is? For a $300 camera with a 500mm zoom (and wide angle!) you can not go wrong with this. Especially if this is going to be your only camera and you're just a photo enthusiast who doesn't want to drop big $ on an SLR and separate lenses. I'm picky, but this camera does what I want it to do. I had a niche to fill and it fills it. A couple cons...The flash almost always hits your finger when you turn it on (no big deal but they gotta work that out on the next one) but you figure that out quickly and train yourself. The battery is not huge like the G10 so you probably want to buy 2 if you're out for long periods of time and not near an outlet to recharge. In low light it isn't the best, but I tend to not shoot in low light anyway because colors are faded etc. This camera excels in daylight, shooting subjects far away. If you're into shooting fast subjects in low light, get an SLR and f2.8 lens :)

I love Canon products, and own many of their professional grade cameras including the new 5D Mark III. However this camera missed the mark by a long shot.

First is the color channel issue. Unfortunately, they designed both the red and blue channel to overdrive their respective colors where a "no question its purple" photographs as royal blue no matter what color temperature the lighting condition or white balance is set for. Likewise, the red channel photographs a persons very light red, almost blond hair as very red. Additionally, light oak cabinets look almost walnut in color. If that is something you can live with fine, if not, your going to spend a lot of time color correcting your photos.

Second is the battery compartment. EVERY camera I have ever owned has a key registration to it so you cannot insert it backwards. This camera does not. Not only can you put it in wrong, but during the last millimeter of insertion it wedges itself necessitating the use of a tool to get it out! How did this get by QC at Canon? It also uses up the battery fast enough that you can't get a full day out of it with less than 300 photos and less than 10 minutes of video.

Third, it has too many features that are just not needed in a point and shoot. Even in auto mode which is great for kids parties and Disneyland, when it switches back and forth between picture styles as the conditions change i.e moving the frame from a group to a single portrait shot, the camera will not fire until it figures out what it wants to do next. Bad for spontaneity.

Some will undoubtedly disagree, but this is what I found and plan to sell it.
One last thing...If you buy the little kit B and H offers that includes the pouch and sd card, DO NOT USE THE INTERNAL SD STORAGE POCKET!!! it has no closure and the action of the camera being removed will pop it right out.

Ease of use is quite good.

My PS SX 260 is a wonderful camera, I use it for birding shots. The zoom is great and it is easy to transport because of it's compact size.

Only flaw is the pop-up flash is located in the wrong place, (this is where I grip the camera), it hits my finger every time it pops-up.

Otherwise, this is a great camera with the option of three different sizes of video one can shoot and also has many other wonderful features.

          My camera is in black.

Comments about PowerShot SX260 HS Digital Camera (Black):

Thank you to the B&H person who helped me in selecting this camera. It's perfect for my level of abilit and my speciic picture taking problem. I've had several cameras but none that takes better pictures or has been easier to use. My daughter has goldish eyes which have always showed as red no matter what camera I bought or what they clained to be able ot do. This is the only one that doesn't. B&H prices are the best, no shipping, and I got 1 day shipping for free. Win-win-win.

Excellent focus, crisp pictures, great features for a point and shoot. I bought this because I heard the newer model has flaws with the video feature and this model is much better. Pictures have been very good over the past month I've had it, and I've been very happy with it.

Comments about PowerShot SX260 HS Digital Camera (Black):

Pros - I love the geo-tagging, lets you see your photos on maps. It makes really good focus and exposure decisions, and the image quality is great for a small camera. Cons - Few of the SX260's competitors have a manual focus option because the little screen makes it hard to see small variations in focus; this camera's doesn't work very well. Most of them have slow triggers and this is no exception. I'd also like an auto-bracket function because I take a lot of HDRs.

Comments about PowerShot SX260 HS Digital Camera (Black):

This is my first digital camera, even so I find it very easy to use. I like that it has an auto mode for beginners and more advanced modes and settings for more experienced photographers. I have been taking lots of nature shots and all of them came out sharp and in focus, close up or zoom it doesn't matter. Although I am definitely going to get a tripod for it, with the zoom all the way out it is hard to keep the camera steady. The software that comes with it offers tons of features, most of which I haven't learned to use yet. I haven't used the video yet as I really just bought it for still photography.

Comments about PowerShot SX260 HS Digital Camera (Red):

I bought this because I wanted a camera that had an underwater housing accessory and could also take good scenery pics on land. The zoom works great for farther away nature shots and the pics I took underwater came out great as well. I bought the red one that is actually not red, but pink.

I purchased this camera because my older point and shoot was very limited in what I could do with it. This camera does everything I would ever want to do! It's light, compact and easy to use. I am still learning about all of its features. I love the zoom on the camera. Even shooting from far away, my photos are clear and sharp. I also like the quick continuous shooting ability. I love this camera. I wish the instruction booklet was a little more explanatory for a beginner like myself, but I have friends who can help me learn the camera.

Comments about PowerShot SX260 HS Digital Camera (Black):

I specifically bought this camera to carry along on travels where my DSLR is too bulky. I am impressed by the 20x zoom and the image stabilization, which works very well and enables handheld shots at 500 mm (equivalent) focal length. Image quality is good, but I am a little disappointed by color fringing. Despite its small size the camera feels solid in the hand. Overall a great camera in terms of prize and what you get for it!

I replaced an amazing Canon video camera with this camera. I wanted something I could put in my shirt pocket with the ability for stills, telephoto, and HD video. This is perfect.

The day after I got this camera I took it to an outdoor wedding. I got great close-up shots with the zoom. All the pictures were sharp and beautiful. I just used the auto setting and the photos came out great. B&H had really fast service. I am very pleased.

Our son, a professional, went on a chat room & it was the consensus that this camera was the best for personal, casual use. How could we not get it? We have been delighted so far, and look forward to becoming more familiar with its many features.
